Portable HD may be too expensive

DAB is a completely different system. Duh!

Is that your only reply, to all the points that I made below ? And yes, I pointed out below, that DAB is full-digital, not a hybred system, as HD/IBOC:

Even with the full-digital mode, DAB does not have the reach of analog...

These two systems, are similarly behaving badly.

THE L BAND IS MUCH HIGHER IN FREQUENCY THAN VHF, and behaves differently. Propogation characteristics are better on VHF (where the FM band is). And unlike DAB, FM HD is still in the "tweak it" stage...where adjustments can be, and will be made to improve performance. Second and third generation HD Radios will also perform better. Technology improves over time. Which is why only dummies like me buy the first genration of anything!

Will you quit freaking quoting about DAB in the UK? Different country. Different culture. Different system. Different technology. Different codecs. Different broadcast infrastructure. Different relationship between broadcasters and listeners (there are no "national" radio stations in the US, for instance. That's MOSTLY what dominates UK listening). There may be some parallels, but they're damn hard to find. This ain't even apples and oranges. It's apples and backhoes.

Digital cell phones, DAB and HD/IBOC are all digital, or digital-hybred systems, and exhibit the same problems.

Which is why the world is rushing back to analog, which of course it completely trouble-free technology. And the Easter Bunny is real!

And in this week's Radio World, there is a front page announcement of a third-party, iBiquity licensed chip that reduces power requirements by 90% and is much smaller (9mm) which will make portable HD radios reality in the second half of 2007.... at a much lower price point.

Like CD players, HDTV, etc., the demand is increasing as the technology improves and prices go down.

"Are you waiting in line for your HD radio?"

"If you lower the price enough, folks will buy the radio. That's the belief about HD radio that is being stoked in our industry. And, of course, it's wrong."

Consumer demand for HD Radio remains flat-lined:

I back up my claims ! :D

"Accurian Tabletop HD Radio is 'absolutely' unremarkable"

"So why haven't other HD radios come close to that $99 threshold? Maybe because the HD chipset costs and licensing fees imposed by the technology's proprietor, iBiquity Digital Corp. (ibiquity.com) can approach half the retail cost of these new radios."

"The Accurian, made for RadioShack (www.radioshack.com), looks as if it was plucked from a lineup of $45 radios, injected with some Vitamin HD and dropped back onto the store shelf." :D

"If this is the face of affordable HD Radio, then the broadcast industry must think it's dealing with a nation of airheads. One year into the rollout of HD Radio, which promises noise-free FM reception with CD-type sound and AM reception rivaling today's FM, it's plodding along like a pathetic E! reality show. Does anyone really care about HD Radio?" :D

I'll answer that ! :D

Very interesting - so much for affordable, portable HD, if it ever becomes a reality; the price of portable HD will never approach the typical $15 Sony Walkman, which is very popular:

You know what? I HAVE THE FREAKIN' RADIO. It works BEAUTIFULLY! Would you believe it if someone blogged that night was on average lighter than day, IF YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE TOLD YOU OTHER WISE? Not being a teenager, I'm not really concerned about "peer pressure". I put that in quotes, because as far as I'm concerned, when it comes to deciding what's right for ME, what is worth the expendature of MY MONEY, and what represents good VALUE, I have NO PEER. It's MY OPINION ALONE that matters!

Hey if a radio that receives HD from 80 to 100 miles away (WMIT-FM Black Mountain/Asheville NC) is "unremarkable" I sure as hell can't wait till I get a good one! ;)

Besides, it doesn't even stand for "Hybrid". There are numerous modes for HD beyond those being used now. Some aren't hybrid at all.
