Possible 100.3 Afternoon Sports Show Host(s)

Rumors are flying as to who the possible host(s) of 100.3's announced afternoon Sports Talk Show host(s) might be. Haven't found any evidence behind any one of them, not yet anyway, that makes one stand out from the crowd as having any glimmer of truth. So far I'm hearing:

1. Tony Basilio. Most often heard rumor.

2. The entire gang from The Spanky Brown Show (may have been started by Brown himself).

3. Bill King, now heard on Rivals.com and Nashville's WNSR.

4. Chris Lowe and Brent Hubbs.

5. News Sentinel writers show would move from the Sports Animal.

6. Any number of defectors from among the Sports Animal hosts. However, most wouldn't want to give up their association with the Vol Network.

7. A combination of any of the above joined by one or more of the local TV sports guys.

8. It's all just a sham, 100.3 is really going to be Country.

1. Tony Basilio. Most often heard rumor. Would absolutely love this!

2. The entire gang from The Spanky Brown Show (may have been started by Brown himself). I like SB and enjoyed his show but i don't see that happening.

3. Bill King, now heard on Rivals.com and Nashville's WNSR.

4. Chris Lowe and Brent Hubbs. They do a very good show together in the fall (The Nation on the Animal) would be a good choice.

5. News Sentinel writers show would move from the Sports Animal. Would not surprise me either, they least there time from the Animal and it would be very easy for them to switch stations, imo.

6. Any number of defectors from among the Sports Animal hosts. However, most wouldn't want to give up their association with the Vol Network. Agreed

7. A combination of any of the above joined by one or more of the local TV sports guys. This is what i have heard. Any combination of Wogan, Russo, Phillips with former basketvol Dane Bradshaw

8. It's all just a sham, 100.3 is really going to be Country. Greatest Troll ever

1. Tony Basilio. Most often heard rumor.Nope. There is a reason he's never been on anything but daytimers.

2. The entire gang from The Spanky Brown Show (may have been started by Brown himself). See above.

3. Bill King, now heard on Rivals.com and Nashville's WNSR. Who?

4. Chris Lowe and Brent Hubbs. Doubtful.

5. News Sentinel writers show would move from the Sports Animal. I'm dreaming of this.

6. Any number of defectors from among the Sports Animal hosts. However, most wouldn't want to give up their association with the Vol Network. Hmmm. I did see some familiar SUVs and cute cars in the 100.3 parking lot lately.

7. A combination of any of the above joined by one or more of the local TV sports guys. I would say a combo of 5 & 6.

8. It's all just a sham, 100.3 is really going to be Country. On their digital channel.

In the early 2000's Tony's show was from 3-6 on "The Team" WTXM 95.7 & 1240

Come ON guys! You would think that, on a radio board, the participants would at least realize the differences between writing for a newspaper, reporting for tv, dissemination info on (for?) the Vol Network, and being an honest-to-God radio sports talk host!

You can bet Brantley will choose a host (or hosts) who know how to run a radio show, first and foremost. Next, he/she/they will know how to discuss sports intelligently and multi-dimensionally. Doing radio is different from all those other examples...not better or worse...just different. Think multi-tasking. A broadcaster who knows sports and a sports star who knows radio. Stir up that little recipe and see what you come up with. I hope you guys are better at casting this little movie than you were at format analysis. g-g-g-g-g

Honest-to-God radio sports talk hosts don't necessarily land in Knoxville. Look at the make-up of who's on the Sports Animal, and look at their backgrounds. Even still, go all the way up to market 44, Nashville, and look at the backgrounds there. Producers are key employees of sports stations, because the hosts are usually good sports talkers, not hosts "who know how to run a radio show."

The Sports Animal is a joke. Most sports talk in Knoxdull is a joke. Doc, Jed and Hefer? C'mon. A girl's volleyball player coupled with two guys whose only trophies have come from buffets? You've got three people who don't have a clue what it's like to be a winner.
The rest of the "Sports Animal" is a joke as well. HAve you seen their hosts? They're ribfest annual winners if not judges. The closest they have come to actually playing sports was the invention of the Wii coupled with online play.

I think Tony Basilio is by far the most entertaining sports host in Knoxville. But he tends to be passionate and says whatever he wants, so would Brantley and Pirkle have the guts to hire him? (Citadel sure never would because they are so in bed with U.T. and afraid Basilio might offend someone and hurt their precious lovefest with the university and the Vol Network).

Anyway, my vote is to team Basilio back up with The Swamp Rat, Dewey Warren. They were always a great team when they were together for several years on WKVL. And it would fit the statement Pirkle made about hiring a sports host and a Tennessee star. Plus, as I said, both of them can be edgy and passionate and they don't worry about who they might offend at "the alter of the orange" :) So it would be fun. Plus, why not go more edgy and fun, since they aren't affiliated with the Vol Network anyway.

Since we're talking wish lists here, it would be nice to see Mike Keith back in town. The dude abides.

Funny thing about people who are happy, they don't jump ship. He sounds grateful to be in Nashville.

On one hand, since Citadel does have Vol Network rights in three Tennessee cities, it only makes good business sense not to tick off the Network or the loyal fans who listen. On the other hand, Citadel in Alabama does employ Paul Finebaum, who is also passionate and says whatever he wants.

Of course Mike Keith "jumped ship" to take a dream job in Nashville as the voice of an NFL team. You can bet he isn't giving up the gig to host a sports show in Knoxville.

Couldn't Mike Keith do the show from Nashville over ISDN line from his home?

No, because during the season he does 15 minute guest segments during the afternoons on each of the Titans affiliates, per their contract to carry games. He's not just the Titans's p-b-p voice, he's got the full-time job of Director of Broadcasting, which includes overseeing sales, hosting appearances by coaches and players, etc.

New rumor just this morning, to add to the list:

9. Pat Ryan, co-host.

Like the others, no evidence here. However, both the "sound" of this and the source were fairly plausible.

Pat would be fine. What about those on the Animal..none of them good enough..what about Doc and Jake? What about Heather? Oh and don't forget the newspaper/LSU guy..none of those even in the running??

Long non-competes and side work they do for the Vol Network will keep those currently employed by Citadel-Knoxville away from the new 100.3

There is some talk that a KNS reporter might be in talks to leave to host the afternoon show on 100.3.

Or that KNS would move its whole midday writers' show from the Animal. Still just rumor, though...

Perhaps if my first statement was in English. You jock and suit guys can speak much gooder than me.

I meant that Mike is too happy in Nashville to jump ship back to Knoxville. Woulda been exceptionally cool if he did. Sounds like the owner of the Titans really likes/appreciates/pays Mike well.

What did he leave in Knoxville? A couple of part time gigs?

That's not going to happen, but one of their reporters (and hosts) has confirmed he's leaving the paper and will take over the show.

Can you give us a hint at their identity?
