Possible KDFC Repeater?

I note that Radio Disney has been selling off stations. The latest are Louisville and Greensboro. Price of each was $350-375k. Perhaps KMKY 1310 in Oakland might be next? Though like a lot of AMs they throw most of their signal out over the ocean, still they'd be able to fill in some coverage gaps in the Bay Area.

Classical? On AM? Anywhere that KMKY's signal isn't crap is covered by the FM isn't it? I think they should go for one of EMF's South Bay signals

I'm talking about what's practical, not what people's wishes are. As for classical on AM, perhaps you forget that the Bay Area once had KKHI(AM) and KIBE(AM). While their audiences were small because both stations also had FMs, the lack of classical programming in the Southbay would cause classical-starved people to listen to AM.

I fail to see what's "practical" about listening to classical music on AM. When KKHI-AM and KIBE were operating, 610 and 1260 were still running Top 40 music. Perhaps they survived a few years past that time (into the 90s?) - I don't recall, but if they did, I'm sure their audiences had shrunk to near zero.

I don't live in the South Bay, but if I did, I would NOT listen to classical music on AM. There are too many other hi-fidelity sources; on-line, Music Choice on Comcast..or just bite the bullet and pay the monthly fee for XM/Sirius.

Classical on AM does seem impractical. Frankly, some works are impractical to listen on over FM, as well. If the station is really 'purist,' and uses little signal processing, you will constantly be turning up the volume to hear pp passages in the car, then cranking it back down suddenly when a f passage comes roaring through the speakers. Even in a cube at work, this can be a problem, due to the great dynamic range of many classical works.

An advantage to public stations and classical is that they can run much longer works, and ones that may not be one of, as a music director I knew put it, "the top 100 hits of classical music," which is cool. I did a free jazz show for 8 years on a public station. It was a labor of love, the GM and I had gone to college together, and he let me play whatever I wanted, since he knew I had a music degree, and had played both classical and jazz music for a living.

KKHI @ 1550 lasted until 1994. Then there was 1510 when it was owned by Saul Levine's Mt. Wilson Broadcasting. First it was KKHI from 1994-95. Then KKHI from 1997-99. Then KMZT came along. Can't remember when but they tried it three times during the time that Saull had it.

David, Don't forget KMZT-1510 "K-Mozart". They did Classical three times between 2000-05.

Who listens to any form of Music on AM in the 21st century? Why would KDFC buy an AM station in 2011? the San Jose Listener would complain about Sound quality. KDFC could look for the lowest rated FM station in San Jose for a better choice.

I still think KDFC should buy KSQQ-96.1

I wouldn't waste my money on a repeater for KFRC, they don't have anything worth "Repeating".
Maybe if they had original local DJ' and programing and possibly AM stereo (remember that mess?)
MAYBE!

This might turn into an "Emily Latella moment", but classical KDFC, not oldies KFRC!

The confusion is understandable. KDFC - KFRC. Classical Music - Classic Hits. Beethoven - Roll Over Beethoven.

And we all remember Dr. Don Rose's wild and wacky morning show on KDFC in the late 80s.

KFRC was the very first station I got to try my Sony AM stereo walkman out on, from that golden year...1984-4-4-4.
KFI was the second station.
