Post your latest DX

Up at 3 am (I work mornings so even on my day off it is usual routine). Perhaps it is a problem with the atmosphere or just my cheapy desktop radio. But I am getting nothing. Usually get KNX from Los Angeles and KSL from Salt Lake City. But not tonight. Nothing coming in.

1700 WEUP AL Huntsville 3/3/2023 2055 Urban gospel very weak with local KKLF off and KBGG/KVNS nulled

I am pulling in 1680 WPRR from Grand Rapids MI like a local ( somewhat) from Plainfied IN with an urban A/C format.

Somewhat? When I thought I was going to get an ID, a booming voice came on and said “Country Legends 99.7” which is KRJO in Monroe LA.

1690 WVON Chicago with open carrier right now 5:46 am CT. Hearing Montreal and at least one other, dominated by one with medical infomercial.

As of 6:05 the WVON silent period is over.

----

Details: An early awakening led to fiddling with the radio dial, and that led to three new catches:

The first was 1700 WEUP Huntsville, Ala. at 5:23 a.m., with music matched to the 10 kW station's stream. I noticed no hash from WVON, which is about six miles from me. So I tuned to 1690.

Open carrier! And two, maybe three stations under the carrier, which was full quieting, to use the ham phrase. One was music. It took some doing, but by 5:43, I'd pegged it as 1690 CJLO Montreal, matched to an SDR in Montreal. The 1 kW station's stream was way behind and would have been a tentative match. That's two. (And as the sun rose in Montreal, it faded out.)

On my CC Radio, on which those catches were made, I was getting the aforementioned medical infomercial, but I think that was a spurious signal. It didn't appear on by Sony ICF-2010, with or without my Tecsun AN-200 loop elsewhere in the house. What did appear with careful spinning of the lazy Susan was a talk program. At the top of the hour came an ad mentioning the locale and then the ID on 1690: WMLB Avondale Estates, Ga., an Atlanta suburb on 10 kW day power. That's three.

Five minutes later, the party ended with WVON throwing the switches to air programming again. But it was fun while it lasted.

I thought I'd give the radio a listen and came up with a new one for me on 690: CBU. At least, I think so.

Also came up with KOA and I think KSL (KSL is the farthest east I've been able to pull in over MW).

SW, on the other hand, is more interesting: the 10-15 MHz range was actually quite open tonight, as I was able to receive bunches of Chinese stations I usually don't receive, BBC on numerous frequencies, WWB and WWBH loud and clear on all but 20 MHz, and WINB (a relatively puny (by SW standards) 50kW) booming in from Philadelphia!

WINB is in Red Lion, PA

My SW catch of the night from Sunday night was a 5kw from Brazil.

WVNN heard in SW suburbs of Chicago fighting with WABC in WBBM hash. 3;56 a.m. CT matched to stream; legal ID 4 a.m. into Fox News. New here! Appreciate the tip!

The Lower Yakima Valley can be an interesting place for FM DX. Today in Zillah (20 mi SE of Yakima), the local Air 1 translator on 89.9 just barely makes it, and I was hearing a weak KKJA Redmond OR (KAWZ) mixing with them. That's a first in the valley itself - I have heard them in the Cascades several times. 1.5KW, 148 miles. I also had a very weak KSJJ-102.9 in Bend (100KW, 175 miles) and I believe KZTM Centralia was mixed with them.

T-minus about 2 1/2 weeks to another big road trip, on the other hand. I'm heading to western Montana in the first week of April, leaving Apr 4, and returning the day before Easter. This should be very interesting. I will be going through Sandpoint ID again like I did last April, but I will be hiking the nearby Mickinnick Trail to 4000' elev. (weather and snow/mud on trail permitting). I will be traveling up to Bonners Ferry, east into Troy and Libby MT, then to Kalispell/Whitefish, down 93 along Flathead Lake, Missoula, the Bitterroot Valley, and then back west on I-90 through Superior/St. Regis/Lookout Pass. Will be DXing along the way, and doing some nighttime scans at the hotels (Sandpoint, Whitefish, Missoula, and probably Kellogg ID on night 4).

Spent some time on the expanded band last night between 11 pm and midnight local time. Surprised to hear WTTM Lindenwood, NJ on 1680 dominating the frequency over WPRR. On 1690 CHTO and WPTX at almost equal strength with nulled local WVON. Earlier heard a new one on 1420, WACK Newark, NY with sports talk format.

QTH: NW Chicago suburb.

Actually woke UP at 6AM Sunday 3-19, instead of crashing at that hour, and tried again for Oldies Gem 104 WGMM 1460 -- the closest unheard here.
And from 7:20 to 7:35 there were Oldies, equal at times with religious Rochester !
Oh, boy! ..... a Smokey song .... Knock Three Times .... The Yellow Rose of Texes, for crying out loud .... Time of the Season....
Only it wasn't 1460 from NW of Scranton. It was WPON from some place NW of Detroit. A promo for a gig called the Uncle Harry show gave the calls.
The dial started to get that fuzzy 'SRS skip is over, Green' sound. The sun was just up and in my eyes to the mini-mart for any size muffin with a coffee for $2.29.
WPON's day 670 watts throws a lot east.
Barefoot GE SR 2. Gives me six stations on 1460 here, none of them WGMM, but heck -- I'll take a new Michigan any day.

DFW, Texas

New station heard this morning 3/22 on my car radio at 0735 CDT. KXJK-950 Forrest City, AR. "The Morning Show", played Bob Segar, Kansas, Al Greene. Spot for Kansas appearing at E. Ark. Comm. Center, good signal.

Checked back around 0815 and 950 khz was KJTV (The Score) Lubbock with sports talk and conservative talk under, presumed to be KPRC Houston.

Massive geomagnetic storm this afternoon/evening - Northern lights seen as far south as Colorado. And with that, auroral cx on AM.

1300 KROP Brawley back in with gospel music // stream, 1330 is a mix of KLBS and KWKW from CA, and 1480 has an Ethnic station which I'm pretty sure is KVNR Santa Ana.

Auroral conditions in the Midwest as well. In Chicago, XEX 730 is as strong as I’ve ever heard it.

XEABC 760 is overpowering WJR.

On 690, XEN, another Mexico City station, dominated at times. “American Patrol,” the old Glenn Miller tune, at 3:40 a.m. CT. Wild!

Instrumental music, then talk under WTMJ 620 from 3:45-4:15 and beyond dunno who. TMJ is usually untouchable even when weak.

530 Radio Encyclopedia in with barely a trace of CHLO at 4:16.

1620 Radio Rebelde with 5 kW at 4:26 a.m.

Spanish talk and music on 1600 but nothing I could trace.

Jumbles on 1560, 1580, 1620. WKYC 1530 intermittently bleeding over strongly into 1520 KRHW Sikeston, Mo., like a local at 4:50.

Finally, on 1540, something with country music sneaking in under KXEL but not often enough to match to stream.

Alas, must sleep.

All heard on Sangean CCRadio. Cloudy here so no shot at seeing aurora.

I'll try again tonight. I've heard traces of what could be XEABC before on 760, but never confirmed. The big behemoth from Tijuana on 690 blocks chances at XEN. Wonder if your 620 was XENK?

Down here in Houston, XENK often dominates 620. I haven't checked late at night in a while but I believe they used to program English and Spanish oldies at that hour. I've also heard Radio Rebelde from Cuba on 620. KTNO in the DFW area is Spanish religion. Probably the most likely candidates.

Spanish talk and music on 1600 but nothing I could trace.

Could be WAOS Austell, Georgia. Quite common in WCGO null. Heard on many occasions here. Listen for "La Mejor" slogans.
