Post your latest DX

Interesting stuff from "up north" this morning. Between 4 and 5 am CDT. Two rare (but not first time) catches...

710: WDSM, Superior, WI. In and comfortably on top with a fair signal. No trace of WOR or anything else, I'm guessing 10kw day power or 5kw night pattern running non-directional. WDSM's night pattern is a really tight marble shooter aimed north. Anecdotally, IME driving by their towers visible from U.S. 53 heading out of town after sunset, youlose the signal after about ten miles. No big deal becase the area is all sparsely populated northwoods. Wisconsin can be tough for DXers, so if there's something up with WDSM, you might want to take a shot at it. Overnight programming is CBS Sports with Amy Lawrence.

The oddity with WDSM is that KDAL from across the tiver in Duluth, MN was completely absent (610). KDAL has been something of a regular here lately, which is a fairly recent development.

950: Rare visit from CFAM, Altona, MB (About 55 miles south of Winnipeg, and almost walking distance from the North Dakota border.) Weak, but under a not-quite as-weak talker that I couldn't ID. Occasionally even briefly rising to the top. Unmistakable with classical music. No trace "usual suspects" WNTD, WWJ, or KOEL. The oddity here was that sister station CFRY (920) was totally missing....and no, they're not diplexed). Also odd: CBW (990), which often roars in here northwest of Chicago, was if anything, weaker than normal. CKDM was also in this morning with its usual fair signal on top of 730,

New catch: KCMY 1300, Carson City, NV. Very strong, almost like a local (Nevada signals seem to do particularly well here).

KTNN is coming in extremely well too, and KRKK is weak, but listenable.

Propagation seems to be good tonight.

KYNO is my benchmark for DXing. If it's coming in well, then propagation is probably reasonably good and some interesting stuff might show up.

It was booming in with a bit of fading.

EDIT: KEJB out of Eureka is coming in decently, although it's competing with the Vietnamese station down south. Not bad for 1,000 watts!

Two more new catches:
  • KKXA 1520 from Snohomish, WA. Weak but listenable with something Spanish bubbling up every now and then (could be KMPG). It may've been coming in all along, but I never noticed it before.
  • KKOO 1260 from Weiser, ID bubbling under KSFB. Apparently they forgot to switch to nighttime power of 36 watts. First time I've heard anything other than Relevant Radio on 1260 since 2007 when it was a simulcast of KOIT-FM!

Quickie update (Crysta; Lake, IL)....

WSDM (710), Superior, WI. No trace of it this morning. In fact not much of anything else on 710. Widespread T-storm activity certainly didn't help. Although, that said, "neighboring" KDALl was in with a weak signal on 610.

CFAM (950), Altona, MB. Still present this morning, but very weak with fades.

Earlier today I had 95.1 KFRG San Bernardino, CA. HD decode no less. 323 Mile Sporadic-E... I have a local on 95.1 but was able to decode the sidebands. This beats a previous record of 92.3 KOMP Las Vegas, NV at 363 Miles. for Sporadic-E on the FM band.

Due to this being HD and not RDS a false decode with audio is not possible.

Tropo is not possible that way due to terrain and likely not MS due to the gradual fading and length of the of the sidebands present. Sidebands also didn't have multipath present.

Also on the opposite end 93.3 KNAL Port Lavaca, Texas. 1560 Miles. Thinking this is Double hop.

With that several relogs from AZ, NM, and West Texas.

I think this will likely close the summer season out unless it decides to appear in August which for me typically doesn't.

I saw 400 mile Es noted NYC to North Carolina last night, but this log went right through left field...congrats Eric!! You'll have to share a recording with us! Did you get an ID, or any local references on audio? Anything from San Diego or Yuma (also short skip) that would correlate with the log too?

New catch, I think: 1380 KRKO Everett, WA. Very noisy signal, but it's definitely KRKO (I heard the ID quite clearly).

Is it me, or have more oldies/classic hits stations been popping up over the past couple years? I don't remember there being this many when I was scanning around the dial a few years ago.

Of course, I didn't have the benefit of a good, DX capable radio back then.

It looks like KRKO is feeding an FM translator. Cross-service translators are providing an incentive for AM stations to try music format, assuming that the majority of listening will be to the FM translator.

Re KRKO ....
That goodie was one of my best catches back in Queens, in a galaxy far far away.
1380 was a local NY channel then, with two share-time stations (WBNX and WAWZ). But Monday Mornings, in the silence of both stations with friendly conditions helped considerably in somehow winding up with 22 stations and 16 different states.
Second-best was '13-80 cuddle' .... KUDL Kansas City KS, playing 'Rockin Robin',
But yeah, one other MM (3 AM Eastern, maybe) there came a lone signal, with a whoop-whoop-whoop sounder, and 'What in the WORLD is going on ! ....., K R K O Jet Line News.....' Sheesh -- I still have a tape of it somewhere.

KRKO was a frequent Monday morning visitor in Cleveland, Ohio, in my 1958-1963 years there. As the EST stations signed off at midnight in that era, first the CST, then the one MST (KOTA) and then the western stations came in. And, very rarely, I heard the Poi Boys on KPOI in Honolulu. KGMS in Sacramento was heard if conditions favored the SW.

Wow. That had to be a long time ago, since KUDL adopted the KCNW call letters in 1976 when it became an NBC NIS affiliate...and the station still has those call letters. It was also an early example of selling off land for development and moving elsewhere without previous directional status: the transmitter site at I-35 and West 87th Street in Johnson County became extremely valuable. Looks like that move happened around 1984. It's now in the somewhat less fashionable district of Argentine, in Kansas City, Kansas. Actual city of license is Fairway, Kansas, which is an enclave surrounded by other Johnson County suburbs and is where KCTV (channel 5) moved their studios in the late 1970s.

In Rocklin, CA XHDATA D-219 & my Sangean DT-400X

I'm on 1270 listening to KVMI, Weak fading in & out

I heard coming up KNWC 2300 Watts Sioux Falls, SD, Checked the Live Stream 1st, it matched

Scanning the KPH LW/MW KiwiSDR, I have found CKGO Vancouver, BC, Canada on 730 with some sort of UNID music underneath.

I can't get it very well on most of my radios because I get too much splatter from KCBS. I can cut through the splatter on my DX-398 in LSB mode, but I can't hear anything but static with a very faint carrier.

Gosh, that's very impressive Mario! Great going! Have not heard KNWC-AM yet, but I do have the FM 96.5 logged on E skip.

I love hearing Music on AM

I been listening to KVMI 1270, while KBZZ is off the air in Rocklin

Arouud 8pm, while KVMI fading out, I heard like it said K-JOY..I looked at R-L nothing

Playing Hall & Oats, But Non Matched up in R-L

Edit It's KAJO

I read that KVMI (aka My 97.5) is or was broadcasting in C-QUAM AM Stereo. Can anyone confirm if that's still true?
