Post your latest DX

Catching up on reporting my recent AM DX…

Some time in mid-August, my local 810 KYTY in Somerset (about 30 miles SW of San Antonio) went off air. I’ve yet to find any information about whether it’s temporary or permanent.

With KYTY off at night, I’ve found that KLVZ “Legends” in Brighton, CO, pops in and out with oldies tunes when I aim the radio NW/SE.

Leaving the radio (a Sangean PR-D4W) on with a recorder on the same frequency/direction overnight on Aug. 21/22, I made some nice new DX catches in the wee hours of the morning: KSFO in San Francisco emerged around 5 a.m. CT with the "Fix California" show, PSAs, and station IDs. KSFO is 1,454 miles from me.

Even more exciting, the recording revealed occasional bits of a weak signal with r&b music and a "National Voice of the Bahamas" ID around 3:15 am. CT. That would be ZNS-3 in Freeport, Bahamas at 1,232 miles, my first ever reception of that country. I was thrown off by the ID at first because ZNS-3 is listed as "The Light," a Christian station, but according to mwlist.org, it airs The National Voice from 23:00 - 11:00 UT.

More catch-up DX reporting…

1140 has become more interesting now that XEMR in Nuevo León signs off at midnight.

On Sept. 4 just before 6 a.m. CT, I logged a weak WQBA in Miami for a few minutes with Spanish-language songs, a station ID, and an “El Pulso de Miami” brand ID.

More recently, I made two more new pre-sunrise catches on 1140: KRMP in Oklahoma City and KCXL in Liberty, MO. The former was playing r&b music, airing the Rickey Smiley Morning Show, and IDing as Heart & Soul 92.1 & 1140.

The latter threw me for a loop for a few days. I was hearing the Rosary in/out followed by female Catholic talk and occasional songs. It wasn’t matching any Catholic stations on 1140, including KCPP in Cleburne, TX, which I was having to partially null to hear it.

Finally, I noticed that KCXL’s schedule has it airing the Rosary and other Radio Maria programs - but later in the day and running Radio Sputnik early in the morning. I tried KCXL’s stream and found it matched what I was hearing. Apparently they’ve dropped Radio Sputnik and added more Radio Maria shows. On the morning of Sept. 25, I heard a Radio Maria ID after the aforementioned programs.

10/1 5:30 AM CDT 680 KC XECHG? Latino station very strong here. They're in Chilpancingo,Guerrero Mexico. It's either them or Argentina! If anyone knows anything about their station I'm all ears. Assuming they're running some serious power.

I tuned into the Kiwi SDR in Ukiah (too lazy to set up my own rig), and I barely recognized the AM band last night!

Stations I usually hear were mostly missing (including local KUKI 1400, which appeared to be off air), and distant stations I usually never here came in much louder than usual.

I didn't log them, unfortunately.

That what's been happening to me

I'm on 1270 most night, I don't hear KVMI, I get

KFSQ Thousand Palms, CA or
KTFI Twin Falls, ID
KAJO Grants Pass, OR

Rádio Inconfidência is based in SE Brazil broadcasting on AM, FM and Shortwave. The 15190khz signal is 5KW at 122 degrees azimuth which is a SE beam direction.

It is heard up here in west central Alaska more often than you'd think and at times, way better than you'd imagine.

And being a nerd, I love hearing legal id's or as they're called in Brazil, prefixo/indicativo de frequencia and Radio Inconfidencia runs them, mentioning their calls, frequencies and city of license.

Here's audio of a short aircheck that includes the station ID recorded over the air here in alaska on 1190, IDing 15190/100.9/880

That is some amazing trans-equatorial DX, all the way up to Alaska, no less.

I can immediately tell that it is Portuguese, sounds vaguely like Spanish but with a twist all its own. I find it a little jarring to listen to Portuguese for that very reason.

Very good signal tonight (75dbuv) from ZYE-522, Rádio Inconfidência 15190khz Belo Horizonte (Beautiful Horizon), Mina Gerais, Brazil.

They’re in southeast Brazil, using 5kw beamed at 122 degrees azimuth. SINPO is almost all 5s, save for NHK World Radio on 15195 from Japan, causing the occasional “womp womp” Charlie Brown like sound on 15190 from NHK on 15195.

0435UTC Sept 21 in west central Alaska with big loop antenna, DxEngineering preamp, EmTech ZM2 antenna tuner & TEF6686 chipped DP-666 Radio.

Does that radio perform pretty well for you? I'm thinking of getting one.

You need an antenna beyond the whip to makt it sing, but yes.. the whip is fine for fm, but it wont do crap on AM

What kind of antenna do you recommend?
A loop, with an antenna tuner and a preamp. im proof it works well.

loops are broadband and you dont need a tuner but for weak or weaker ish HF signals, it helps for sure. the preamp boosts things a bit.

What i reccomend is exactly what i use and you see how well it works. Plus this is all very portable.. the loop, the preamp, the tuner, the radio.. all of it could be carried away in a backpack vs a longwire and something bigger

I've spent alot of time with various radios and antennas.. and what i use now has turned out to be the best portable set up ive ever come across

Heres a video showing off my set up and the pieces of it

I ordered a similar radio with the same automotive-grade chip, as well as a "donut" attachable antenna to go with it. I enjoy that nighttime AM DX, and the expanded band above 1610 kHz is especially interesting, there are only a handful of stations, and you can often get a modestly-powered station from halfway across the country.

The "donut" antennas get mixed reviews.

im talking a loop like like the former wellbrook.. w6lvp, etc. the small ones arent anywhere near as good

Sitting on the W0AY SDR in Stevensville MT for a little AM DX.
1710 has a solid signal from the Jackson WY TIS station for Bridger-Teton National Forest. Quite readable at times with a second co-channel. KON667 is the callsign. Tape loop talks about bear safety. 265 mi at (assumed) 10 watts.

1610 is a cacophony of 10-20 carriers...but there have been fadeups. Including WPFK508 Chilcoot CA (Caltrans station), 10 watts at 555 miles!! Easily copied with Caltrans mention and callsign. I've had 1-2 UNIDs fade up to listenable levels but fade out within a few seconds.
Can't find CHHA Toronto. Maybe related to recent solar activity?
Also noting a TIS from Yellowstone National Park that has wolves howling and bird noises, etc.
