Post your latest DX

I was on a three day road trip this week, and snagged a nice graveyard catch in my hotel room.....

At the Fairfield Inn in Sault Sainte Marie Ontario (On the border with Michigan between Lakes Superior, Michigan, and Huron.). 1450, WLEC from Sandusky, OH. 4:30 am, EST. Fairly steady on top for about 20 minutes. Oldies with two positive IDs. 358 miles. Radio was my favorite traveling companion.....Sony SRF 37 Walkman.
 
I just looked up WLEC - it's a full service kind of station. I'm SHOCKED they haven't gotten an FM translator yet...
TVFM log and 6 meter map are in my bookmarks again. Oh wait, it means Eskip season is here. May, June, July, some of my favorite months of the year. The thrill of hearing FMs from 1200 miles away, the Nebraska farm reports, Southern California commercials, and the top of hour IDs for out-of-market K-LOVEs...

W228EN is its translator.
 
@ Jim-SATX : NICE catch on that KYUL.

In the 'old days' 1310 could one night be a female canine off which to hear anything -- and sometimes the place could be a cornucopia. But IIrc, none of us 4 JFK Airport-area DXers ever heard a 'K' call on 1310. Wow, was that one crowded 'regional' frequency. A tip of the earphones to you, sir.

I didn't hear anything about a translator frequency during my DX session. And neither R-L nor WLEC's website indicate that a translator is operating on channel 229 (93.5)...or anywhere else on the dial. Maybe it's off, sold, moved, an expired CP, or whatever.

BTW for those unfamiliar and/or curious, Sandusky is a resort town on Lake Erie, about an hour's drive east of Cleveland. (And yes, I've been there....dirt cheap off-season hotel room rates during cold weather months!)

radio locator and fccinfo are your friends, W228EN is yet to be built CP for WLEC

CP was granted late last year (November 29) and knowing the winters along the lake, I'd imagine they waited until March or April to begin construction. I'd expect it very soon, even if it has until the end of 2021 to build.

Thanks Radioguy and David.... Mystery unraveled. I'd also guess they'd want to get that thing up and running now that the weather has (theoretically) broken. Undoubtedly there are more local ad dollars available during the summer tourist season.
 
KLO AM 1430 is coming in inside my house near Phoenix tonight. It’s in and out, but I’m listening to various old-time radio programs, which I enjoy. My old GE pulls it in best, but it’s listenable on the Sangean HDR-16.

A thing I think is cool is that the Sangean has a solid, stable lock on the digital signal from KSL tonight!
 
Checked out the "shortwave pirate band" at 0100 UTC on Sunday and heard Wolverine Radio on 6950 kHz (USB), with very strong signal. Played some blues tunes including Lights Are On by Albert Collins, followed by an ID and sweeping tones. Open carrier at 0121 UTC.

Back when I was active DXing SW bands I used to log quite a few pirate stations. I see they are still active in this frequency range (6900 - 6990 kHz).

CADXER, that wasn't sweep tones you heard.. that was digital data aka SSTV. IF you record from before the tones start to after they end and then run it through a program like FLDIGI, it would decode to a picture.

I heard a pirate on 6925usb a month or two ago and got an awesome quality picture thanks to that

If you try an external loop with that HDR-16 I think you'd be able to match the GE with it. The chip is capable of DX -- HDR-16's have short loopsticks compared to the other Sangean AM-FM models (like the PR-D15 and PR-D5, which have 200mm loopsticks).
 
When you say external loop, you mean something like the Select-A-Tenna I had many years ago? I have thought about getting one again. The ‘16 has no connections for a wired external antenna.

Look at PK's Antennas in Australia
http://www.amradioantennas.com they cost a little more but are basically hand constructed and very good quality.. ive owned several id buy one of these before a select a antenna, and PK's has a loop that doesn't require a direct connection

Yes. Either get a used Select-A-Tenna (excellent components inside, so probably would still work well), or an Eton AN-100 (reasonably priced).

You could also build a loop. Get a plastic 'milk crate' from a box store for $12, get 110 feet of insulated (or other) wire, and go online and buy an AM radio tuner cap -- a good metal one costs maybe $20. Tape the wire to the crate, use alligator clips to clip the ends to the tuner, cut wire if it tunes too low in the band... use zip ties to secure the tuner to the crate.

Will out perform a Select-A-Tenna.
