At 5:00pm CST, KRVN would still be on non-directional day pattern. I hear them well here in Overland Park during evening critical hours until they switch to their directional night pattern. Then, "poof" they are gone.

It's a strong nighttime regular here.
Most of the time, it's on top of 880 from Honolulu.
Makes sense because they send most of their nighttime signal right this way.
I checked 880 at the same time I heard KRVN yesterday (5 PM) and it was all WCBS, as usual. It was coming in quite strongly, and was already present at 4 PM actually.
But roaming around the dial I got a couple of new ones... KWKH Shreveport on 1130, and WDZ Decatur IL on 1050. I was especially happy to get KWKH as it was one of 2 clear channel stations in the US that I had never gotten either here in Chicago or in California. All that remains is KRLD Dallas on 1080.

Picked up KWKH in Vernon Hills on Tuesday, absolutely bombing in until its pattern change at nightfall; then it was a mess on 1130 despite being only 31 miles from WISN's array in Union Grove, Wis. The WISN night pattern is tight.

Thanks. I guess that's a good thing about being near the winter solstice... the sun sets later in the south than here up north. So there is more of a chance to get Southern stations before they reduce power/change pattern around sunset. First Dallas yesterday then Shreveport today.
Hang in there going after WDZ, I've heard them at my location a few times. Not easy, but definitely doable. As for KWKH, when they were on STA a few years back at 12.5kw non-directional, they were relatively easy. Now that they're back to normal 50kw, they're tough. But hearing them under WISN around sunrise is easier. Also, as you discovered, KWKH sometimes owns 1130 before WISN powers up.
I was wondering if that 880 in Honolulu would get in your way. When I was on Oahu years ago I couldn't hear KRVN.
In the Chicago area I've heard WCBS a few times around 3:30CST this time of year. Way back I could sometimes hear WABC around that time during their Top 40 days.
Here in Phoenix, Arizona, I heard CKWX from Vancouver, BC last night on 1130 AM. I can always tell I am picking up CKWX when I hear them talking about temperatures of “+1 at the airport, 2 downtown.” They are also unique in that they don’t have any network news at the top of the hour. Instead, they do the top stories and then proceed to do traffic and weather together on the 1’s. Got to love Canada!
I also have heard KWKH from Shreveport, Louisiana here in Phoenix, but that was back when they were on their STA non-directional night-time pattern. I have not heard them recently since going back to their normal 50,000 watt directional pattern, which is surprising considering they do send some of their night-time signal this way.
As alluded to earlier, KWKH is scarce here at my home location when it's on regular night pattern.. Different story on the beach near Pensacola, where it's a nightly blaster (and something of a pest). I'm also a little surprised that it's tough duty where you are.
And yes...Vancouver is great. Except for the traffic. The city is built on a collection of peninsulas and islands. Connected by bridges. Each of which is a bottleneck. I've been late for more than a few appointments there, but fortunately the natives are very understanding of what it's like to navigate the city.
And also yes, The temperature in celsius takes a little getting used to. But it's not particularly difficult to understand once you get the hang of it. Same thing in the UK and the rest of Europe. And you're also correct that celsius makes it easy to ID Canadian stations.
But then there's also the matter of the "humidex" that they give in Canadian weather reports during summer. (We call it the "heat index").
There is a MUF of 71 over SoCal and 50's-60s over the AZ/NM border. I hope Winter skip is around the corner. Right now, a likely path seems to be CA to TX/LA, so I'll miss out on this one, but we can hope!
Hoping we see an MUF of 100+ today!
I found it very interesting that Ober Gatlinburg (a ski/snowboarding resort) explained temperature inversions and how it affects operations. (I didn't note any FM DX though).

I used to hear KWKH in Ohio, but when I came to TN (Crossville TN) for a visit, I heard KWKH with a good signal, at that time carrying the Truckin' Bozo from WLW. I drove through Shreveport once and heard KWKH "like a local"

Last night I took my handy Sony pocket radio, their ICF-P26, which I think is equipped with their ubiquitous CXA-1019 IF chip (never looked inside the radio, but the radio performs like my other ones that have that chip). Tuned to 840 and heard the usual culprits, minus KXNT Las Vegas which isn't always audible. Then I tuned to 830 and heard WCCO, Minneapolis, with talk about the Timberwolves and Lakers game. E-W bearing, using my crate loop, although the station was still audible without the loop.
The ICF-P26 can obviously DX, as WCCO isn't necessarily a handy catch out here on the west side of the Cascades. I've discovered that, like with other radios that don't have real tight selectivity, if you back the radio away from the loop and fine tune it, you can hear DX close to strong adjacents. I used to do this with my old 1990s Sony Walkman, which probably has the same chip.
