Yesterday on the Amtrak going back to Sacramento around like near Davis at 9am on 103.7 I was getting Spanish Talk interfering with KOSF on a Hot Day

Most times it will override KOSF, I checked R-L, The closes is KQBM-LP West Point, CA at 100 watts, But who knows

Tropo does odd things

Was back up at Manastash Lake hiking yesterday (19 miles west of Ellensburg), a yearly tradition for me. The TEF-6686 ended up bagging several new stations for the ELLENSBURG logbook.

A pipeline at about 5500 feet, 400' above the lake and just below the ridge, netted several Vancouver FMs that are NEW to the logbook!
- 106.3 CJNY with RDS (PI code CABC), Bon Jovi, and IDs. This is the new First Nations station.
- 105.7 CBU-FM over KRSE, with CBC Music programming and RDS
- 104.9 CKKS-FM-2, Sonic Radio
- 102.7 CKPK, with a promo for a contest on The Peak and RDS
- 99.3 CFOX, RDS and rock music
All five of these stations are on Mount Seymour, so they have the same distance - 186 miles. Also had KAFE-104.1 Bellingham eclipsing KXDD, but that's a relog from 2020.

In addition, I also had a meteor scatter catch - 107.1 KSLT Spearfish, SD with 'Lord, I Need You' Matt Maher // playlist. I had reliable phone reception when I got to the top of the ridge, and the KSLT website matched the song. At first, I thought it was KKEQ Fosston MN, also a Christian station. This is a NEW station, 100KW at 845 miles.

Ellensburg log now sits at 961 FM stations heard.

Trivia: This is the same hiking area where I worked a tremendous e-skip opening in July 2020, all by accident. I believe I had over 40 new stations, including KVAY-105.7 Lamar CO, the only time I have ever seen the 100KW KRSE wiped out by an E-skip signal...anywhere! The MUF was high enough for the NOAA weather band, and may have even hit channel 7.

Sometimes the AM band can be full of surprises.

Central Kentucky: 9 PM EDT: KTLR 890 Oklahoma City with Christian music, on top of a surprisingly weak WLS Chicago. (Calls used to be KBYE)
I was moving vehicles around in my driveway so I dialed up 890 expecting to hear Mark Levin, but was surprised at getting OKC.
Other than KRMG, Tulsa, the only other Oklahoma station I've logged is KOKC OKC during the eclipse.
Radio: GM Bose factory radio 2005 Silverado.

CFYM 1210 Kindersley, Saskatchewan 250 watts non directional at 1870 miles with several classic hits tunes and a mention of “CFYM”, heard in the 0800UTC hour in Alaska Aug. 17

Heard in the 0800 utc hour with some classic rock/classic hits, clear mentions of Swiftcurrentonline.com and CJSN. 1970 miles! 1kw non directional

0845 UTC Aug 17 with classic country music and liner mentioning NE Montana and KATQ. New! 49.5 watt night power or 5kw day power? Normally this is CFAX and KNX mixing but I’ve got something under KATQ but can’t tell if it’s CFAX or KNX.

Was on the Petersburg, Michigan Global Tuners receiver (SE Michigan) - heard KONO 101.1 and KCYY 100.3 San Antonio, KVMK 100.9 Wheelock TX, and KLBJ 93.7 Austin. Also several Spanish stations, probably some from Mexico, others from TX.
That is insane! To think the station I grew up with, skipping all the way to Michigan, but then again I think I have some old videos of stations I picked up from Michigan here in texas too

NEW STATION/NEW COUNTRY LOGGED IN ALASKA! You'd think after nearly 4 years, how many countries who have AM stations left have I not logged? Well there's some!

About 0745UTC Sun Aug 18th, I was tuning across the AM dial, starting with 1710 and going left.

I hit 1440 and wasn't hearing the usual fairly strong signal from from CKJR Wetaskawin, Alberta with english language sports... they were there but way down.

I had... what sounded like music. I initially thought it might be religious and or spanish.. but when I heard an announcer come on and talk, I quickly realized it wasn't english or spanish.

I was straining my ears to narrow down the language and I was pretty sure this wasn't mainland/mainstream Asian (Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Indonesian, Vietnamese)... it just didn't have the cadence and style of most speech or radio I've heard from those countries.

The more I listened, the closer I became to about crapping myself... lo l(ok, not quite.. we'll call it shock and surprise!)

The more I listened, both the music and the announcers talking was giving off serious Island-y vibes.

So once I had that in mind, I listened even closer/harder and began to realize... "This is Kiribati!!!". I've heard CD airchecks as far back as 15 years ago from them (I used to contact the station, say I wanted an aircheck, they'd record a studio quality one, burn a CD and mail it to me after I sent $20 USD via western union!)... and Im like "this speech has the same slight tinge of Asian-y sound and the laidback low key sound that I remember the Kiribati language to have!

I couldn't pin down any words in the 45 minutes I listened that I understood... between a combination of no words translating to english or the signal dipping in and I.. but a friend and I scoured the internet... and this is the only station that fits!!!!

9kw non directional at 4550 miles!

TEF6686, DXEngineering preamp and 15 ft circumference wellbrook loop

I am hearing an open carrier on AM 1500 in the Burlington -Mt Vernom area of Washington state. Any ideas? I think it might be a WSDOT TIS outlet but would like your guesses

I think I have an answer for AM 1599 - this might be the Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) TIS station , but was running dead carrier. Also noted were carriers on 530 but those are likely WSDOT.

Never have personally heard a TIS on 1500 and I'm in the Seattle-Tacoma area. What kind of equipment you using? Just curious.

Radio Kiribati logged on 1440khz 0720-0750UTC Sat Aug 24 in Alaska. Heard at “a native speaker would easily understand this levels”, alone on channel with island music and announcer chatter. 9kw @ 4500 miles

NEW LOG! 1630 KKGM Fort Worth, TX 925pm AK Aug 7 with mention of “Dallas’ B I N 1630”, several generic B I N mentions and then election news. Decent signal for a brief minute, before fading out but it keeps coming back in short bursts. Distance: 3241 miles.

Got KVIP on 98.1 on my Sangean DT-200X on the train going in to Davis on the Amatrak at about 9am

Didn't check on my phone, but I know it's not K251CA-FM from West Sacramento

Then I heard on the same frequency some guy was yelling & music is repeating

This turned out to be a WSDOT TIS station near I-5 and State Route 20 in Burlington, Washington. It's underlying mission is to emit Washington State Ferries status alerts for the travelers heading westward but only transmits a dead carrier. Audio finally appeared for a recent "amber alert" hence the resolution. (There's also a sign on I-5 announcing its presence.)

A sister station resides on 530 AM near Swinomish Casino on SR20 - likewise with dead air.

Hearing a SonLife Network Station in Upstate SC on 92.1 FM (Unusual / 1st Time Catch). Their only listed use of that frequency, is near Jackson, Mississippi (WJNS). Perhaps the Recent Tropical System Francine, over MS/LA is helping reception. Haven't confirmed Station ID (Skipped TOH), but perhaps if it is indeed that station, that's over 500 miles away.

Edit: Ironically, there was some discussion of the recent tropical storm in that area. A very weak signal, but its been listenable almost all morning today.

This one has been a surprise to me:

With the Qodosen DX-286 I bought a few weeks ago, I have consistently been receiving XHITZ 90.3 FM (signal) in the eastern San Gabriel valley of Los Angeles county. I have to walk around the back yard until finding one of several Al Bundy style "FOX viewing positions," and there's another, more local station (ironically Spanish, with XHITZ Mexico being in English) that's constantly battling it for the capture effect. But it's there regularly.

CJRB 1220 Boissevan, MB loud and clear with classical music at 2250 miles away tonight in west central Alaska… also heard CFAM 950 Altona, MB with classical as well but not nearly as good. (Sept 30, 10pm AK hour)

I heard KVIP 98.1 again when I was walking home from Walmart at about 7PM in Carmichael on my Sangean DT-200X

Also last night I heard 550 KOAC Corvallis, OR above a Weak KUZZ

There's a new SDR in Ukiah, so I was checking it out.

As I was tuning around, I parked at 820 for awhile because I heard some sort of talking, which is difficult with the slop from KGO and whatever's on 830.

Anyway, near the top of the hour, I heard "red eye radio," which suggests that it could have been WBAP, which, if confirmed, will be a neat catch.

I'll have to try for it using my own radios and antennas before I can say it's mine, of course.
