That's an impressively uniform and symmetrical contour!

Those radio-locator maps are "predicted" contours and not measured or done with full terrain compensation. The site used to say "for entertainment purposes only".

Friday at around 11:58pm EST, I received WUNO "Noti Uno 630" San Juan, PR in Clifton, NJ. WUNO is around 1,619 miles (2,607 km) away from me. It's my second ever AM/MW catch from Puerto Rico. WKAQ "WKAQ 580" San Juan, PR was my first back in 2023.
Nice catch. I gave WUNO the "NotiUno" name about 40 years ago and was consultant through about 2005. Fun to hear of it being heard outside of Puerto Rico.

What's a better site for showing FM signal penetration?
Like Longley-Rice maps?
I looked at the FCC site, but only shows one big circle, not shades of reception, like Rabbitears.com does with TV signals, like this:

A morning surprise this a.m. in an Austin, Texas, suburb playing with my Yacht Boy 400 PE picked up KTNN-660 from Window Rock, Arizona, 7:00 a.m. CT.
767 miles from the Sawmill AX transmitter site to my home.
Luckily, 660 from Dallas wasn't coming in well, which is good as it's a Salem one-sided talker.

The station was playing classic country, a Jon Anderson song, then another 2, then I got the ID.

The signal is way outta the station's nighttime range.

19:45 CST WHB 810 KC Kansas City, MO 5kw weak

20:00 CST ZNS-3-AM 810 KC Freeport, Bahamas fair copy. Power unknown.
20:26 CST playing " You dropped a bomb on me" The Gap Band.

That made my night!
810 KCMO came in well here in Austin the same morning I got KTNN in Window Rock.

In the late 70s, as my dad and I drove from Great Bend, KS, to Scott City, KS, I vividly remember hearing KEYN 103.7 from Wichita almost all the way west to Scott City, KS, And this was on an FM converter radio in my dad's small pickup.

180 miles

My own city, where I went to high school, was 79 miles from the transmitter, on the northwest part of the map, right at the station's distant contour.

My best friend's dad told me he regularly heard the station on his business drives between Dodge City and Garden City, KS, (left side of the top map), 170 miles.

The transmitter is on a 1,000' antenna.

There are 2 TV stations in that same area, 3 & 10, neither are received via antenna in Great Bend, so the purple line is likely the limit (then) for TV signals. I do know those stations are receivable in Pratt (west side of map), which is similar distance from the transmitter.
That was before BC Docket 80-90 began the trend toward trashing up the FM dial with more stations than can be economically supported.

In the early 1980s, I routinely picked up KLZR Lawrence, Kansas in Columbia, Missouri. That's roughly around 150-160 miles. At the time, KLZR was on a 500-foot (or so) tower in Lawrence.

The part that I left out - and this may apply to other situations of longer-distance reception - is that stations from more than about 60-70 miles away would have deep fades every 15 to 20 minutes, except when tropo provided for a steadier signal. If the ground was dried out, there would be electrical static as well, particularly from about noon to sunset. Mornings were best.

The industry was so averse to competition that they made it impossible in many cases to put allotments in areas where they would be economically viable. This resulted in Class As being dropped in 20 or more miles from the population center of many markets. These are the so called rimshots. If those are doing surprisingly well in the ratings, it means that many formats are not served well.

We had a multi-hour power outage this morning. It resulted in a clean AM dial with no noise from the usual electronics and RFI.

This morning at 8:00 a.m. CT, I was able to pull-in KRVN, Lexington, Nebraska, 880
AM. Typically, I can't receive that station, as there's a Spanish-language station on the same frequency in Houston, Texas, not far from Austin, Texas, and on the same frequency.''

Turning the radio got both, but was able to understand the KRVN programming. Outside of the Fox News radio update, the announcer stated the temperature in Lexington.

I see the signal was still on its nighttime pattern, which, technically, can make it here, along I-35, but the Houston station is in the way.

KRVN's daytime signal doesn't quite make it to Texas, plus there's the Houston station dominance.

KRVN was on day power then, sunrise is 730am. theyre running 12.5kw non directional nights after something in the directional array got damaged

Odd KRVN's daytime signal traveled several 100s of miles south of its normal limit. It was feint and took some listening to understand where it was coming from.

It's good I got them in the guest bathroom near the home's entry, which, for some reason, receives AM signals well, especially when I place the radio next to the side of the tub on the floor. The radio doesn't do as well in a bedroom-office on the opposite side. Too staticky, even near the window.

I'm in Houston, about 40 miles SSW of KJOZ's transmitter, and I can usually null KJOZ and hear KRVN starting around KRVN's sunset until KJOZ goes to day power in the morning.

you gotta understand winter time dx... things can still happen quite a bit/quite well right at or slightly after sunset. When i was in SE WY, i would hear a Manitoba AM (CKDM 730) start being listenable as early as 230 or 3pm)
