Back on January 4, I logged a new station from Mexico - 1190 XEXQ in San Luis Potosi. Reception was made starting at 7:34 p.m. CT at 531 miles distance on my Digitech AR1780 portable.

The station was mixing with XECT in Monterrey and playing a Bach chorale and other classical/opera pieces that matched XEXQ's stream. Finally, at 7:54 "Pomp & Circumstance" was played and XEXQ disappeared.

A few minutes after that I heard something puzzling. At 8:01, XECT IDed with its call letters and Monterrey location. Then after a few seconds, the announcer gave an XEPRS 1050 Rosarito, Baja California Norte ID. That was followed by Mexican government PSAs, ads, and more talk.

I thought XEPRS was on 1090. Could this be a network feed screw-up? Regarding the frequency given, I've listened to the recording slowed down several times, and I'm clearly hearing Mil Cincuenta (not Mil Noventa) AM.

youre thinking about this a bit too much, just likely the announcer mis spoke

XECT Monterrey is //XEPRS, which is indeed on 1090, per the IRCA Mexican Log. The XECT website lists various "La Voz" stations including XEPRS. Oddly it also lists 830 in CDMX, which has been playing rock music as Locura for a while when I've checked.

The IRCA log also says XECT's license expired last year but it's still on the air.

I've not logged XEXQ yet but given the unusual format, I should try for it. I have heard XEWK in Guadalajara in the past, but apparently they've moved to FM-only.

I was driving through northern Illinois and eastern Iowa last night. Very little skywave reception, a lot of groundwave reception. Most of the 50k regulars were absent, though I could hear WLW, WHAS and WTAM and of course all the big Chicago signals. Local-ish stations that would usually get gobbled up were audible, making it feel more like regular daytime reception. Is this probably due to a flurry of auroral activity?

KCBS AM reception up here in the north bay hills was unusually bad, too.

Didn't think to check anything else, but I'd imagine it was similar.

I noticed something similar in Michigan last Night. New York City clears were in, Chicago was quite weak. That happens with Auroral, but it was a different kind of Auroral. When I was in Mecosta County, I'd frequently fall asleep to WLS, and wake up to WCBS, without moving the dial.

Thanks, wildthangjim, for clearing up this DX mystery. I wasn't aware that XECT and XEPRS now share the same format. The announcer must've misspoken the frequency with the XEPRS ID because I can clearly hear him saying "mil cincuenta."

Also thanks, exbloguero, for the info about the XECT court case.

Online SDR FM Tropo - Heard K-Love 94.9 KLTY from Dallas/Fort Worth - On the FM Server in Central Texas - Near/West of Austin .. Nice & Very Impressive ...

Those Tall Sticks in Cedar Hill are Powerful Performers in a Great Location to Easily Reach Deep into Texas.

That FM Server in Johnson City TX is Near The Same (Low) Latitude as Austin & About 200 Miles From DFW.

A couple of afternoons ago at 5 p.m. CT, in my car close enough to home to count, KYUI 1560 Sullivan, Mo. New. On 1 kw just before the switch to 250 kw, when it disappeared and other 1560s began a fight. ID and weather.

Post NFC Championship DX (let's goooooo Seahawks!!):

Aurora is still alive and well. Southern California and Mexico seems to be a highlight.

Rare KIRN-670 Simi Valley CA is in underneath KBOI tonight, KBOI signal still reduced by solar activity. Also, XEABCA-820 Mexicali in with no KGNW.

Other DX: 910 XEAO Mexicali with ID and Mexicali references (250 watts), very strong KGBN-1190 Anaheim with weak KEX underneath, a perfectly-listenable KHTS 1220 Canyon Country with Elton John, KZER-1250 Santa Barbara (very rare) mixed with a talker, KMZT-1260 Beverly Hills (Classical) on top, 1440 KFOO Riverside (BIN), etc. But there are several regional pests (200 miles or less) on the higher frequencies.

KFOO 1440 has made it up here a few times...... listen for the station specific liner at about 27-28 seconds

1440 from the Inland Empire was one of the easy CA catches from Cleveland, OH, in the early 60's. After all the other stations on 1440 had signed off on Monday morning, it was either KPRO or KMED in Medford, OR on that frequency.

The best one was 1270, where at 3 AM EST the channel cleared and KNDI from Honolulu came in. The interesting thing in those days when many channels vacated at midnight on Sunday was that you could have different openings towards Vancouver / Seattle, or San Francisco / Medford / Reno or LA/ Tijuana/ Phoenix.

I recall one Monday morning finding an unusually strong CFUN in Vancouver on 1410 and I went looking for Alaska on 750 and 660 and was rewarded with KFAR, my only Alaskan.

I've heard almost all alaska am's except one... 630 KJNO. KIAM 630 is too close and too strong.

KLAM a 250 watter on 1450 300 miles away is heard way more often and better than youd think

I am pretty sure I picked up WAKY on 620 from Louisville within the past hour here in Pickerington, Ohio.
If so, it's a first-timer for me, mostly because WTVN aka Radio Free Canada is next door on 610 and is an omnidirectional blaster daytime from about 10 miles to my west. I heard Cherry, Cherry from Neil Diamond just before 2 p.m. along with a couple other songs I couldn't identify, but they would seem to fit the classic hits format of WAKY (also heard on 103.5 locally). Louisville is about 200 miles southwest of me, but the distance is less an issue than the very loud slop from 610. WTVN buried the signal on 620 before I could catch a top-of-the-hour ID at 2.
If WAKY is what this was, it's the second signal I've heard here on 620 behind WRJZ from Knoxville, a regular nighttime catch up this way that is made easier by being outside WTVN's main nighttime lobe.

Early this morning 01/27/2026, I received two new stations in Clifton, NJ. The first one was Melodía Stereo on 730 KHz from Bogotá, Colombia, which is around 2,501 miles (4,027 km) away from me.
The second one was "Radio Musical Nacional" from La Julia, Cuba on 590 KHz, which is around 1,334 miles (2,148 km) away from me. It was mixing with WROW Albany, NY at the time.

I'm surprised you haven't heard the Cuban Classical station on 590 sooner. They are pretty regular along the east coast. But the Bogota catch is way better! 730 has the calls of HJCU.
I bet before long, 810 Caracol (HJCY) can make it through WGY. Several years back I heard my only South American during spectacular conditions...it was Radio Nacional de Colombia on 680, HJZO Barranquilla. Somehow CJOB wasn't under KNBR when I tightly nulled them...it was Latin guitar music! Was stunned out of my mind!!!

I usually get WEZE Boston, MA on 590, but for some reason it wasn't there at the time. WROW will sometimes appear at night. There was no sign of 730 CKAC Montreal, QC during the overnight hours, which is why I was able to get Melodía Stereo. 540 Radio Auténtica was my first Bogotá station back in 2022. I received 680 Radio Nacional de Colombia recently when WRKO and WCBM were nowhere in sight.
