What stations in SC may have potential for a format change in 2011?
I'll get the ball rolling, and as usual....Shine 96.7

Don't forget 106.9 is also a Christian station and there are even more. I wonder if they'll get USC again this year. Not only is it playing something we have enough of, it sounds awful on top of that. The only reason Clear keeps that format on the air is because they can use people from 102.5 to operate it. Any other format might require somebody new.jself1982 said:I would be more than just thrilled if Shine 96.7 would flip formats. As long as its a popular mainstream music format such as Top 40, GenX, and not so much of a news talker or sports talker. There is already too much Christian with WLFJ and all its several scattered frequencies of it's Radio Z mess.
I, personally, would like My102.5 to change formats. It's such a bland, background music, station... where its very easy to hear it in the background but not good enough to have it stay in your memory for long... just bland, dry, dull, drab, etc.
I'd like to see a non-clear channel country station come into town, with popping hot imaging, jingles, airstaff, playlist, on top of its game sounding country station. There are several out there, just wish we had some non-clear channel ones here in this area. 99.9 Kiss Country has potential, but, it is Clear Channel. hmmm.
Entercom does fail with mornings. Hawk and Tom have run their course and The Rise Guys are just awful. Bo & Lauren sound small market. 93.3 really could flip for all I care...terrible morning show and overall sound on a massive signal that does not live up to its potential. They've let it linger since 2005 though so I guess this year won't be any different.freqdev said:i know the focus is on the cc stations but entercom is a fail too. if 98.9 is the better ac station they could afford a complete morning show based on signal strengh. same with 93.7. one of the best signals in the market and rarely is in the top five in ratings. we have 93.3 because a third country station with lots of imaging didn't work in 1995 and probably wouldn't work now. plus a trimulcast of their talk format with one fm and two ams. that is a waste to me. i agree that 102.5 is stale although i like older songs. 96.7 is low power and will never get good ratings. i prefer country and flip stations.
RadioOCD said:Well, lets see. Columbia has...
3 classic rock/hits stations (Fox 102, Magic 98.5, 94.3 The River)
3 AC stations (Carolina 92.1, 96.7 Steve-FM, B106)
2 Urban Hip-Hop Stations (100.1 the BEAT, Hot 103.9)
2 Urban AC's (101.3 Big DM, Kiss 103.1)
2 Sports Talk FM stations (ESPN 93.1, 107.5 the GAME)
2 Country stations (97.5 WCOS, 93.9 Cat Country--although they have a horrible downtown signal. The multi path KILLS the station. They need a translator.)
1 CHR (WNOK 104.7)
Columbia has way too much AC and classic rock! Sadly, I don't see ANY potential for changes in the Columbia market. If anything, it would be great to have a CHR war. But, who would do it? No one in this market changes much, unless it's country, AC, or classic hits/rock! In my opinion, B 106 should at LEAST advance to Hot AC with some 90's hits. 96.7 Steve FM needs to admit they have an AC agenda and bring back the Lite handle.
I hate to think what you'd say about a station I would like.jself1982 said:I, personally, would like My102.5 to change formats. Kiss didn't sound too bad last time I tried it, but WPTL is so much better. Too bad it's daytime only and has such a sorry signal.jself1982 said:I'd like to see a non-clear channel country station come into town, with popping hot imaging, jingles, airstaff, playlist, on top of its game sounding country station. 92.5 is actually the better country station. Too bad they can't dump most of the newer stuff, because then I guess no one would listen, which isn't good for a 100,000-watt FM.carolinaradio said:I agree that the country stations are boring, especially 92.5....too bad Entercom would never do country here. Their "Wolf" format is extremely modern and hot sounding, but with two high powered FM's doing that I don't think we need another one..
I wonder how old WESC skews. Probably older than the average country station. I like the WSSL sound more, but that's just personal preference...Lhsh said:I think if you changed WESC to a hot country station you would royally piss off every redneck in the upstate. When I lived in Anderson county years ago, I woke up to Bob Hooper on purpose because they did not play just the current top 40 hits and you cannot argue with that station's success.

jself1982 said:I am a fan of good imaging and a good jingle package. Honestly, have you ever caught yourself singing along to the jingles of any station yourself? I think we all do. With that said, WESC has had the same jingles from Reelworld since what 2004-2005? It's long overdue for a new jingle package, not to mention someone over there needs to send a new sheet of written liners to their VO guy.
And WSSL, just flush there imaging down the drain, they haven't sounded "country" with their imaging since Jesus was a boy! (LOL)
Some will say imaging has nothing to do with a station and I disagree. Imaging works perfectly when you are not "Live and Local" like all Clear Channel stations in this market. How often is there an actual DJ live on the air and not voice tracked? That's where imaging comes in to remind you "Broadcasting to Greenville and Spartanburg...etc" Cause' Lo and Behold we sure don't have a live and local DJ telling us about our local areas.
We can discuss format flips all day, but some of us can tolerate our current poor selections if we just had an actual live DJ making radio back naturally interactive!
