POWER 102.9 New Orleans

I had such high hopes for Power 102.9 but boy IMO this station has gone to the pits. When Citadel launched it, CC finally gained competition for heritage Urban Q93 who wins by default. Big Boy's Neighborhood was the initial morning show, but that failed and POWER went local in AM drive. Great move to compete with Steve Harvry on Q93. Cumulus bills POWER as Rhythmic but at the beginning they were basically Urban. Now, the music is your basic Rhythmic "Hits and Hip-Hop" format and mornings are back to syndication with Rickey Smiley. The weekend mixshows and live broadcast are gone. New Orleans has a music genre known as "Bounce" but that music is no longer on POWER. Don't know how long they can battle Q93 with the current Rhythmic format.

Shawty, I had a chance to check out Q93's 5pm mix this past Friday. First, I was shocked to hear Dj Ro still "mixing" for the station. I was also disappointed that he wasn't mixing. Back in the early 90's,(yes I said early 90's), Dj Ro mixed his a$$ off on Q93. I picked them up when I lived in Lubbock, on the AM side when Q93 was also on 1280. Now, he just plays a song then play another song. No mixing no songs together. I think it's time for him to let somebody else do it.

Buc, I'm a sucker for New Orleans bounce music. I often Iheart stream Q93's 5pm Traffic Mix and Friday and Saturday night mixes, but they aren't live. I've heard the same DJ Ro mixes played over and over again that they are so predictable. Q93 does have a Saturday night mixshow from 7pm-9pm called "Social Shakedown" thats live. POWER 102.9 came on the scene strong with a live broadcast on the weekends playing heavy Bounce music. That's history now along with the "Wake and Shake Mix" they had when mornings were live and local. Remeber Steve Hegwoods HOT 104.5/KNOU ?

Damn, Q93 is beating the brakes off POWER 102.9 still! 10.8 vs 2.7 in 12+ numbers. It's sad Cumulus hasn't made any attempts to compete head on with Q93. The same Rhythmic format in a city like New Orleans just won't cut! When Hegwood ran HOT 104.5, even they had decent ratings before Katrina. Problem....fix the music! Play Urban Hip-Hop and leave the Pop music to B97

I heard the same thing last time I went there. Made me sad too. He used to kill it.

Cumulus (formerly Citadel) would rather program around an existing mainstream urban rather than compete with it. I've noticed this trend with their handling of newer urban-leaning or urban stations.

It looks like Cumulus is intent on turning their Urbans into Rhythmics. Just ask the folks at WEMX/Baton Rouge, who now reports to Mediabase's Rhythmic panel, and I have seen their playlist, which is a radical departure from the R&B/Hip-Hop fare they used to play.

MAX 94.1 is or shall I say was the only Urban Mainstream in BR. Wow, what a joke. Who's making these ridiculous decisions.

If thats the case we might have to start monitoring WWWZ, KIPR, WLZN, WBLX, KRRQ, KMJJ, KTCX and WEAS to see what happens next.

Idiots that's whom. Cumulus doesn't have a clue how to properly run an urban station.

I'm not too worried about KIPR, KTCX or KMJJ. In the case of Little Rock and Beaumont, both have no co-owned urbans in their local cluster. KIPR has been doing well on its own since separating from KOKY, and KTCX has NO competition but it is the small town version of a V-103 Atlanta. In the case of Shreveport, KMJJ's crosstown competitor KBTT (Access 1) was originally a rhythmic a decade ago.

But it would really be a shame if the other Cumulus urbans are converted to rhythmic. They might as well convert their urban ac's to rhythmic ac's/oldies then.

Well, POWER 102.9 is now "New Orleans' Party Station." They got rid of the "Nonstop Hip-Hop" and "The Most Hip-Hop in New Orleans" positioners. Definitely more Rhythmic now. Wrong format, wrong city Cumulus.

At this rate they should bring back "Diva!"

We all saw what happened with the rhythmic formats in Atlanta (WBTS), Charlotte (WIBT), Detroit (WDBT), Memphis (WAPW) and Chicago (WBBM) for that reason. Only Washington, DC can have a huge Black presence and get away with having a rhythmic in the case of WPGC.

So far they have maintained the airstaff but that remains yet to be seen. I am concerned about how Rickey Smiley will appeal to suburban listeners out in, say, Metrairie or Slidell for example.

WPGC is still too urban-leaning to be a true one (like sister station WZMX). It's main core audience still is black. All one has to do is look at the type of concerts and events that the station promotes. How many rhythmics send their DJs to the BET Awards?

Update: POWER 102.9 has a new logo too. The jocks are really decent over there, especially Mike Swift but I know this is the format he likes most. There is too many Top 40 station in New Orleans for POWER to even make noise. Ugggh, Q93 will never have real competition and they sound horrible but win by default.

Man, I could have cried the last time I went to N.O. and heard how bad Q93 has become. I used to look forward to my drives down there, I'd 'borrow' ideas and be excited about listening. I could use 25% of my PD time and make a far better station that Q93 is now. It is truly sad to think about all of the once legendary Urban's that have fallen to the CC monster.

If it is not a top biller then CC sees no reason to maintain the quality of "their investment". KMEL, WGCI, WJLB, WWPR are the top urban billers thus their local autonomy of programming. However, KMEL is the only one that is of measurable quality in terms of musical programming these days.
