Power 105 leaning more on classic hip-hop?

Checked them out last night for a bit, it seems Power is focusing on a lot of back in the day joints, and more are getting on rotation. Would it be possible if Power would tweak and go classic hip-hop 24/7?

Power was always like that from day one, moreso than Hot 97.

Whereas Hot concentrated more on current hip-hop, Power mixed it up on a 70 current/30 recurrent-classic basis. It would be VERY interesting to see a classic hip-hop station happen on standard terrestrial; there is certainly a lot of history with the music where a station like that can be successful, especially in the market where hip-hop was born.

I don't see Power tweaking totally to classic hip-hop...YET. Hot 97 could do it as well, they had the "Throwback" on HD-2 so the potential is there.

I haven't been listening so I cannot confirm if indeep Power is playing more classic hip-hop. But its an intersting development. The Urban CHR format is really crowded right now and ratings are taking a hit. Seems like blue ocean over in 92-04 rap. Who knows, we shall see.

I thought I was hearing some more classic hip hop thrown in too recently, not as much as when they first came on the scene, but it seems to me at least they're trying to go back to the way they started.

Tony Santiago,

I don't see the day coming for New York or any market to get a Classic Hip-Hop station. Look at the numbers for (Hot 97) WQHT & (Power 105.1) WWPR-FM they've dropped.

I've heard that Rap music is dying and is being replaced by Heavy Metal. The kids who were mostly White suburban and even urban that purchased 70% of rap CDs are listening to rock.

When a music genre loses most of its base that places that music in trouble.Rap music or any music is dead without Whites making up the majority of its supporters.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

wow.."Heavy Metal".. havent heard that genre title in ages...

Which bands, artists are these kids listening to?

I haven't lived up north in a while, but down here in the south. Rap is still king. I think it's just both stations are canceling each other out.

I have to agree on Tony on this. Mr. Cee's show Throwback at noon on Hot 97 is one of the highest rated shows. And FunkMaster Flex's show is a must listen. And yes the numbers have dropped at Hot 97 and Power Kevin. That can be attributed to WBLS,KISS FM, Z 100, and KTU now playing Hip Hop Music. When Hip Hop music was doing well in the ratings, those stations weren't really playing Hip Hop except for KISS and BLS. But Urban Music is still in the top ten in most markets. And Kevin, I'm quite sure that all listeners that grew up on this music would love to hear this music on a terrestrial station, mixed in with Classic Soul and R&B. And Kevin, where did you get your info?

Kevin L. Sealy,
Out of all cities Phoenix, AZ currently has a "Classic Hip-Hop" FM station. The playlist is all classic hip-hop from the 90s and early 2000's with some 80s, but no R&B songs at all. This is the format Urban radio is missing out on and the perfect alternative to Urban AC R&B. Take a listen 92.7/99.3 THE BEAT www.azthebeat.com

You sound kinda Personal I think that is your wish for no Types of Urban Urban AC Rhythmic ANYWHERE on the radio. You are waiting for the day the the Entire Radio band is Some type or Rock or Metal. If radio serves only whites, Advertisers and Radio companies will lose out on a BUNCH of revenue. White may be considered the "majority", but put the minorities together they will out number the "majority"

Maybe Power 105 has something, MTV Jams has been playing alot of Old Skool Video's lately.

htowler,

From your post, I can tell you know absolutely nothing about me to make such a statement. How long have you been reading or posting on this board? Do you read or post on the NYRMB? I suppose you don't.

If you've been reading my post on this board and the NYRMB, you can tell that on occasion I post about WNEW-AM a station for which I'm passionate about for their Pop Standards/MOR format.

The White youth population still make up a substantial (if not majority) part of the population under 18. Hip-Hop had its best days when suburban White kids were purchasing 50 Cent and Eminem CDs.

I would love to see more Standards stations come up. But people who grew up with that music are dying off.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

Whites? Majority under 18? In this market? Preliminary census data is showing an overwhelming change towards ethnic and racial diversity in the younger generation and continuing to trend that way. People are becoming more ethnic, and also they happen to be more exposed to poverty during this recession, even the "white kids"

(Hip-Hop still has some of its best days)...You just have to avoid American radio where the music has become awful. Listen to some Russian Radio, or British, Eastern Europe, the Balkans, even Central Asian. (One of Uzbekistan's top artists is a rapper), Check out France, especially Skyrock, the French hip-hop is very impressive, as well as new latin hip-hop.

Worldwide hip-hop is thriving..........(Because its authentic still), unlike here where its now all pre-written junk r&b sexual nonsense, instead of what is is everywhere else, real words with meaning with a good beat, clever rhymes. If American Hip-hop were authentic in most markets it would still be popular, thing is....those that hold to that legacy don't get airplay. Thank God for Europe and the rest of the world for building upon and keeping alive what once started here in the Bronx.
