Power 106.7 Flip

Kent said:
KSMG has been up and down between a 2.0 and a 3.0 over the last year. The reason Cox would flip Power instead of Magic is because Magic is a decent 25-54 performer in spite of low 12+ ratings. Its competition has also made recent changes that will likely increase Magic's 25-54 female numbers. Power's competition is nowhere near as inept.

your logic seems dead on

Kent nailed it. 106.7 poses a dilemma for Cox. FM Talk probably doesn't do a lot of damage to the other Cox stations. Just about any other format option runs the risk of taking listeners from someone in the cluster.

As an example, if Cox went the Classic Rock route; they could either go the route of Classic Hard Rock like their WHPT in Tampa; probably would take audience from KZEP, but most likely some from KISS as well. Plus an attention getting morning show like "Bubba the Love Sponge" puts them in direct competition with Lisle & Hahn.

A Classic Rock/Hits hybrid like WSFR in Louisville or WSRV in Atlanta will siphon off some listeners from KONO.

Any form of AC slices from KSMG and Country harms Y100 or finishes KKYX.

They have tried Top 40 (KELZ) and R & B (KPWT).

The Cox cluster as is, doesn't give the 106.7 Frequency a lot of "free range options".

I was thinking of the 106.7 History and let me know if I missed any formats/Calls:

KESI - Album Alternative (- 87)

KMMX - Hot AC ('87 -91)

KKYX - (Simulcast of 680) 91-93

KDIL - Hot Country (93-95)

KCJZ - Smooth Jazz (95-99)

KCJZ - R & B Oldies (99- ?)

KCJZ - Dance (? - 2002 or 2003)

KELZ - Top 40 (2003- 2006)

KPWT - R & B (2006 - 2009)

K??? - FM Talk? (2009- ?)

On a side note; with KBBT's competition apparently through, will Univision keep 97.7 Rock as a blocker to KISS or will they take it a different direction?

playlist was godawful.
example...
POWER 106.7 #1 FOR HIP HOP.....
HEEEEEEEEEERES LADY GAGA
Lady Gaga? Black Eyed Peas? Those are just 2 examples of artist that should stay on pop radio and NOT on a Hip Hop station.

I understand what your saying but at the sametime Power never got it together. Take a look at their sister station in Orlando, Party 95.3. They've manage to become a successful station with a somewhat similar playlist to Power 106-7.

maybe so... but san antonio is completely different than orlando

different region
different radio market situation
different demographic
different state
different city frame of mind

Thanks for pointing out the obvious. However, PPM's are set to roll out later this year and Rhythmic leaning Top 40 format appear to be much more successful than the Hip Hop format.

I said this when 106 first came on and I'll say it again. SAN ANTONIO IS A BIG CITY WITH SMALL MARKET MENTALITY! Like one of the other posts mentioned. Listeners here don't need all the hype from a DJ to be an urban Hip Hop station. Hispanics are the majority and blacks are the minority. Cater to the HISPANICS and the BLACKS will always be there. That did not happen. Wasn't good enough.

Music rotation wasn't all there either. One thing about Beat is that they are consistent with what they do.

I do give gredit for a good try by Power. I can honestly say that I will miss Big Boy on terrestrial. Didn't care for those "in a can service" phone bits from the Beat. Big Boy wins hands down. I also don't care for Xavier's voice which is so annoying. The fact that he talks and knocks artist that are old and all. Does he know that he's no young pup either? His time like ALL RADIO DJs will be up. Nothing last forever. It's the nature of the beast!

For those Jocks that got the boot on Power, best of luck to yaz. You guys were awesome may God bless you all and help you find other jobs.

As far as talk radio? We'll see how that pans out. Again. BIG CITY, small market mentality. We shall see.

power has started stunting playing christmass music dont know how long maybe the weekend.

FM Talk....too funny!!! This will surely become a flop. Austin tried FM Talk a couple of years ago and went no where.

6-9 months tops?

Wasn't the Austin FM Talk station "Hot Talk"? Hot talk stations were huge failures but FM stations with mainstream talk formats tend to do a lot better with younger demographics than AM talkers have.

Austin tried FM talk twice... both with rim shots.

Locally owned KJFK licensed to Lampasas back in the early 90s tried it with Howard Stern and local talkers Alex Jones and Shannon Burke. There was some buzz but not enough numbers to sell.

More recently KQBT licensed to Taylor and owned by CBS at the time tried Hot Talk with Howard Stern and an assortment of bad choices including some comedy radio network. I believe CBS handed down a mandate that every market needed to carry Howard Stern so they built a station around it. I think it lasted about a year. Awful radio.

Nowadays NPR is doing very well on KUT. In recent years they've added more talk from NPR and BBC and started a local news department. they sound good.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the effect of this station on KLUP. Savage and Ingraham used to be cornerstones of their lineup. Boortz and Clark Howard were added to KTSA's lineup around the time Ricci Ware was banished from weekdays last year. Both have since been dropped, so their track record was apparently underwhelming.

FM Talk.

To the powers that be. I will NOT listen to that format. Would it be too much to ask to have a Dance/House/Techno format if you would actually like to make some money off this station? A serious percentage of 15-35 demographic would be glued to that station 24/7. Maybe play some ambient house/trance between 2am-6am. Bring in resident DJ's to spin live. How hard can that be? Seriously?

I'd take the Christmas music they are playing right now over FM Talk.

MY God is it too much to ask for a dance/techno radio station as suggested?? I am forced to listen to Pulse 87.7 from New York City, New York, or Energy 92.7 from San Francisco, California on my computer to enjoy good dance music.

I know people in San Antonio seem to think in "small town" mentality but PEOPLE WAKE UP! Dance music is boomin' hot throughout all of Europe and a lot of AMERICAN cities. There is more to music than just country/western, hip hop, rap etc..... and last but not least...the dreaded classic rock! This is the 21st Century music evolves!
