Power 108 airchecks from 1990

I wonder how much different the End would have sounded and how much longer it would have lasted if they went with the original format idea instead of going full blown alternative?

You forget...in the 90s...alternative was the rage. At one point, The End, WMMS Next Generation, and 92.3 were all doing alternative (though Jammin 92's alt program was just in the evenings...). So, going full blown alternative was the best step for them to take, at the time. The reason 107.9 switched, was Clear Channel sold them to Radio One, since they had to divest stations to buy WMMS, WGAR, etc... Radio One, of course, programs urban formats.

Jammin 92 went by a separate name in the evening alternative hours. I want to say it was Channel 92X or something along those lines.
The biggest game changer would have been if WMMS had gone CHR/Pop in 1998 as KISS 101 FM. Jammin was still around at the time.

Lots of fond memories of 107.9 The End, not just here but around town too. They certainly made an impact but never posted very big numbers though. Had they survived until today, the PPM may have been more favorable to them.

Thanks for the cool checks. I heard a clear difference in terms of music and excitement between the two hit music stations in that period.

Funny thing in the Jammin' 91-92, I heard Donna Allen's "Serious," which I also heard on the Power from Spring of 1987. Talk about a strange discovery.

The Jammin one was more exciting than the Power one. With 92, the dance music seemed to have more energy, and the announcers showed it. 108, meanwhile, had some lackluster bits with a cringe worthy music mix, but wasn't awful. Still, it was clear the station was going to change. It was still big with teens, but faltered in the main ratings around late '91/early '92. I think by that period, a lot of Mainstream CHR stations were struggling with having different genres alltogether in the same playlist.

I remember reading articles, especially from the Radio Daze book, on PD Lyndon Abell, who had just takenover for what became The End, saying Power was playing "Top 40 very badly" and made it a "less hit-oriented contemporary music" station as a Top 40/Modern Rock station. It seemed that Abell was not impressed with their mix by the time he arrived.

I can hear why 92 stayed in place while 108 became The End. There was more energy and excitement with the format change compared with Power's last few months.

That broadcasting school in Independence should be closed down as well because they promise people the moon and maybe 1 person in 10 classes nails a job.

Very sad and a very expensive life lesson.

Former End talent Dan Binder now OM for Sunrise Broadcasting in Wilmington NC.

Wasn't he PD of The End at one time?

The morning show on Power was called "The Breakfast Flakes." It became "Landecker and Farina" around late '89/early '90.

The other PDs at The End were Lyndon Abell (its first when WPHR became WENZ) and Phil Manning.

Binder was the last PD at The End before its flip to its current format. He also ended up at WQAL as APD at one time.

Thanks Clevefan. I remember Lyndon Abell but I don't think he was there all that long because Rick Michaels took over shortly after the change. Phil Manning does not ring a bell at all. Was he after or before Rocco?

I think before Rocco. He likely replaced Rick.

The End really was a creative station and it's earlier years were its best. I think it should've fought harder against WMMS during the Alternative wars of the mid-90's.

Neumann was PD at WENZ? I thought WNCX, then jumped to WMMS (or was it vice versa?). Didn't think The End.

Was Rocco officially PD at WENZ?

I'm old. Gets confusing.

Since the subject of WENZ was brought up, I'd thought everyone here would enjoy this July 11th, 1992 Billboard article about Rock CHR (which WENZ's PD at the time was interview for).

I also submit an aircheck of Brian and Joe from August of that year, which included then-Mayor Michael White

I've also submitted some more audio of The End and Jammin' 92 from 1993 to that site (When it will be posted, I don't know).

As for who was the sweeper/ID guy on The End in its first few years, it was the late Brian James.

Neumann was PD of both NCX and ENZ when those two were sister stations located in the Halle Building (now the radio home to NCX, WKRK, WQAL and WDOK). He was there before he went to MMS. I think Rocco was official at one point at The End, but I could be wrong.

Cool article Robyn, thanks for sharing. The End was unique when it was a "Rock 40" station.

I should add that the artists 107.9 pushed out after it went from WPHR to WENZ (Mariah Carey, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Amy Grant) would become cornerstones over at WQAL when it had flipped to Q104 a year before The End arrived. After the big flip, Q ended up slowly overtaking Lite Rock 106 1/2 in a year! Plus, Jammin' 92 benefited too when Power went away.

I did hear the Brian and Joe and thought that was a cool aircheck. Hopefully, they'll pick up the other airchecks, but you can also post them here too. I would love to hear the End and Jammin' sessions from '93 (Twenty years ago!).
