Power 98 going rhythmic?

This afternoon I heard Adele and LFMAO on Power 98, which was very surprising. Could they be shifting more mainstream?

I don't know why - if any station needs to be more rhythmic, it's 95.1 to help their ratings. Power 98 going rhythmic would be in Kiss's way too much, IMO, and Kiss is already struggling...

I think Charlotte really needs a rhythmic station but it shouldn't be Power 98. Channel 96.1 has the teen pop market cornered so Kiss should really go rhythmic to differentiate themselves. Interesting that Channel 96.1 still has the same mix show on Saturday nights that they had when they were 96.1 the Beat and still sound rhythmic during that show, but outside of that they sound indistinguishable from Radio Disney.

LOL -- Channel 96.1 is an aggressive Top 40 station -- I don't get a Radio Disney vibe at all from them.

Neither do I. I think they're a pretty awesome CHR lately. I get good vibes listening to them.

Kiss 95.1 has an uphill battle - I don't know if they can overtake Channel again. They don't have a ton going for them right now.

Thats why Kiss should go rhythmatic.
Channel is just sounding to good right now.
Reid at Night is a solid dj- especially he has deep roots in NC!

Or, perhaps Kiss should adopt a playlist like CBS's other AC's, which are quite rhythmic friendly. 98.7 WDZH in Detroit is a good example.

After more than 10 years programming KISS and basically having it all to himself, it's time for John Reynolds to prove himself.  Letting longtime morning team, Ace and TJ, get away and jump across the street has obviously had an immediate and huge impact on 95.1 in the ratings.

Reynolds chose to take the easy way out by moving Otis and "The O Show" into the morning slot instead finding a high powered replacement to compete with Ace & TJ. The recent ratings and a mere listen show the folly of this move.

It was pretty obvious that Clear Channel and 96.1 was where Ace & TJ were headed once their non-compete expired.  And the best John could come up with to meet the upcoming challenge was "The O Show"?

So the questions is - what have you got John?  What's your next move?  Time to show your stuff!

Kiss letting Ace & TJ slip through their fingers was a MAJOR blow to them. I agree that they had time for a better quality morning show instead of such a subpar replacement.

When Ace & TJ went to 96.1, they took a lot of listeners from Kiss that potentially will never go back. Kiss needs some reason to listen to them over Channel, and I can't think of one - 96.1 plays "all the hits" (unlike 96.1, as mentioned, who ignores some 'hits'), has a better airstaff - the only thing I can think 95.1 has going for them is heritage, which in the end doesn't get you by forever. They need to just be different than Channel, instead of trying to compete for that audience...

(oh, and above, I meant CBS CHR's, not AC's...don't know why I put that)

When the February PPM's come out and they start (Kiss 951) to see a downing trend, something needs to change. However, budget cuts could be a factor or even a disadvantage for CBS right now but I don't know if that's a good excuse to "not act swiftly" and get back to the level of Channel 96.1. We will have to see how the next couple of months go for Kiss. I don't know if music is a good reason one, but perhaps good management is making them falter - maybe?!? Channel is really running the show for now but Channel can't boast and go overboard. How long can they take the lead is something that I will and a lot of your "posters" be noticing for the next couple of months for both Channel and Kiss. When Clear Channel knows how to focus on how to make a good CHR (Z100/FLZ/G105) - they really do know how to get the ratings. It's proven. Kiss, on the other hand - I don't know. I only listen to B96, which is owned and operated under CBS is a good rythmatic-leaning CHR.

CBS doesn't have the best CHR's. I like Kiss 108 in Boston, but the others just aren't impressive to me. Some of the issue may be that in markets like NYC and LA, they are trying to go up against heritage CHR's (KIIS and Z100), which is difficult, but I still don't really care for the sound.

Clear Channel has the CHR format down. It works. I know a lot of people don't like the sound they have (usually pretty rhythmic friendly), but you can't argue with success. Most of the best CHR's in the country are Clear Channel.

Another thing with Kiss is the music pitching - I know that's not what's hurting them, but it drives me crazy!

Power 98 must have just been more uptempo last week because it was CIAA week. This week they have been back to their heavily R&B/slow jamz lean. I think there is definitely a market in Charlotte for a more uptempo urban or rhythmic station.

Absolutely. 92.7 FM was the last to do it.

But what I really wish would happen is that the FCC would declare channel 6 to be suitable only for FM radio and that all the frequencies from 82.1 to 87.9 would be opened up so all these short-spaced stations would have someplace to go. I want my classic country!

CBS is known for trying to balance it out with both R&B and hip-hop with their urban or urban-leaning rhythmic stations. V-103 and urban-leaning rhythmics (WPGC, WZMX, and WMBX) are dayparted to their target demo, which is usually 18-34 year olds are targeted during the mornings and afternoons, 25-34 year old adults from 10AM to 2PM, for 6-10PM timeslots, which targets 12-24 year olds, but late nights and overnights are back to 25-34 year olds. Even V-103 in Atlanta is very much 'full service urban contemporary' but plays more hip-hop than their competition, Radio One-owned "Hot 107.9" WHTA, but core demo is 18-49 year olds. Power 98FM is what it is a mainstream urban that leans R&B-heavy due to PPM to capture the demographics that are likely to listen during certain times of the day. They knew if they went hip-hop heavy after PPM they would fall out of the top 5 overall ratings so they are doing what works to remain in a stable position.

After looking at their playlist, theirs is no different than any other mainstream urban these days except they play more deeper cuts of certain artists and local artists like most CBS urban stations tend to do.
