Power 99 is back?

Just heard from a friend that 97.9 is now calling itself Power 99. Guess this is since 99X moved to 99.1.

Anyone know what's going on? I'm not in a place where I can listen right now.

OMG this sounds awesome........This would totally be my favorite,...........That was the best station ATL ever had. This could kill 106.7. I wish they would put this back on 99.7 where it should be, and move that disaster Q100 to 97.9.

I heard that they registered Journey979.com. Supposed to be an AC station. We'll see. Very interesting.
If that's not the actual station URL, it wouldn't be the first time. Stations have been known to do that as a decoy to throw off the competition.

Does Cumulus really want to get into this erupting ATL AC fight? Or do they smell blood (B98.5's) in the water? Or do they want to flank Q100?

journey97.9.com used to point to the Cumulus corporate page. Now it points to a "directory listing denied" page.

Is there a backdoor link to a 97.9 stream? I'm outside of signal range but wouldn't mind hearing the stunting...

The stunting is actually very cleaver..............Where are you?

I can't believe they're even considering competing against themselves, but hey I wouldn't mind at all - I'm hoping for a "Power 99" CHR - I just can't believe they'd do it, but hey Clear Channel is competing against itself now in New York CIty (with two mainstream CHRs), so who knows...

I haven't heard it but I'm going to assume this "Power 99" thing is just stunting, otherwise if Cumulus did a rhythmic Power 99 guess it could chip at Wild 105.7/96.7 at the edges a little bit and block for Q100. Did they dust off the original Marc Driscoll voiceovers? It would be cheesy if they did and edited a "now at 97.9" on them.

Noticed that all of the stunt formats are adultish formats--classic country, AC, hot AC, urban AC, oldies, classic hits, jazz, smooth jazz, old skool R&B, classic rock. No AOR, no alt, no hip-hop, no rap. So, I'm guessing some kind of adult format.

If that indicates anything...

Noted the use of old 99X, Power 99, and Quixie (!) imaging.

Monikers being bandied about--Storm and Legend.

Of those formats:
Classic country--doubtful, considering the current saturation of country in general in ATL and CC's recent dumping of the format, plus 97.9 is an intown signal.
AC or hot AC--could this be it--a flanker to Q100 and going after B98.5?
Urban AC--Kiss has that all locked up.
Oldies--Soon-to-be-sister AGH has that covered.
Classic hits--again, maybe as a competitor to B98.5, not as AOR-focused as River. Could ATL be getting a Jack station?
Jazz--no.
Smooth jazz--hell no.
Old skool R&B--Could Cumulus make a run at Radio One?
Classic rock--Rock100.5 has that covered.

My guess is AC (maybe hot AC, but not as hot as Star), classic pop hits more like Jack than River and aimed at B98.5 and filling the gap between AGH and Q100, or maybe old skool R&B.

Re: Power 99 is back; WWJD?

Power 99 isn't coming back......| I remember when our dance station in Phoenix flipped and they started talking about "Y95 plays all the hits!!!" (and they also claimed to be country as well...). Y95 was a rhythmic / rhythmic top 40 in the 90's. Flash forward to the next monday and IT WAS CLASSIC HIP HOP. No Y95 at all. I believe this is the same thing they are doing with the "Power 99" or whatever is going on... decoying.

But then again, it may be a "reverse decoy" (with the purpose to make people think along the lines of the first 5 words I started this whole thing off with). In other words, the "reverse decoy" might be to make you think "oh, they're lying - it wont happen", then next thing you know, they really do come back with a modernized version of the Power 99 format, leaving you to feel like you've been on a delightfully surprising reverse episode of Punk'd. So maybe, Power 99 IS coming back.... However, you have to ask yourself; "Why would they launch a CHR or something similar when Q100 is already supposed to be their mainstream top 40?" Also; Surely enough, Q100 doesn't need an extra signal. So, unless they are going to be like some of the urbans and use their extra signal(s) to broadcast a station that is already fine on their main signal, it's unlikely that they'll just use 97.9 - to broadcast Q100 there, too (I sure hope they don't use the extra signal for that..).

Now, could they launch a rhythmic chr just to mess with WWVA, attempt to cause them to fail and flip , THEN flip the format again as soon as WWVA changes? Hmmmm.... OR, is this entire thing ONE HUGE MEGA SWITCH UP DECOY, consisting of two smaller double decoys, which.. in the end, will result in there really being the AC station that everyone first thought it was going to be before they were decoyed into believing something else?

"WWJD?"

That the question on everybody's mind, but one thing for sure is that:
ONLY JAN KNOWS FOR SURE WHAT WILL JAN DO.

Being as the 97.9 frequency is a translator, doesn't it have to "translate" something that already exists? Or would this likely be accomplished simultaneously by adding this new format onto an HD channel of one of Cumulus-Atlanta's already existing full power stations (WWWQ or WNNX)?

Well, by extrapolation, there's my answer. The new station will be available on WWWQ-HD3 (99.7) as well as translator W250BC (97.9)/Riverdale. Thanks, Shawty!
