WDUV is back at the top , Q is number 3, and WLLD is tied with the Eagle for fourth? Wow. Meanwhile Mix continues to sink.

Thoughts?

Look how much Magic dropped from the Holiday period. It really proves that the Christmas music stunt never translates into long-term listenership. Happy to see WLLD solidly beating WFLZ. Just personal preference. Not that FLZ is bad, I just like Wild better. Also good to see DUV regain the crown for whatever that's worth.

I am baffled by the success of the Eagle unless it is really an uptempo version of the Dove focusing on the "hipper" version of the senior centers? It is automated only 4 hours less than the Dove so except for Q105 and WLLD, it looks like personality is not essential anymore.

THe PPM is nothing more than "Drive By Hearing"! It is NOT listening. The PPM picks up the signal from what ever place happens to be playing that station. You don't chose to listen, you have no choose but to hear it, thus "Drive By Hearing"! The whole thing is a sham. And only a third of PPM are out there, compared to how many diraries were out there. Why do you think SBS and urban radio are boycotting PPM? Why do you think Arbition is being called on the carpet by congress? You can play to the PPM, but you are doing a great disservice to your listeners. And sooner or later this whole thing is going to come and bite radio on the ass, which at this point...they deserve it after firing good radio veterans who gave their entire life to this business tro make it what it once was. It now just a shell of what it could have been. Remember where you heard it first..."Drive By Hearing"!

Personality only works on a 1-1 basis LIVE! Personality with automation is Robot in Lost in Space, not Data in TNG. Local is not necessary when done right.

I don't mean automated personalities from another city or planet. I am referring to stations that use only liners like WXGL and WDUV

Those who listen to those types of stations, are either unable, unwilling, or too lazy to get an iPod. Add your own cutsie liners and the station's yours - without commercials, and of course, the next earthquake or Michael Jackson death to bother your listening pleasure.

Wrong. The PPM is designed to document which stations people are exposed to. This way, advertisers have a good idea which stations are really hitting the audience, both in terms of duration and frequency. After all, rating help determine advertising rates first and foremost. Ratings bonus for personalities are only possible and permitted because high ratings mean more revenue via ad sales and the company is willing to give the personality a piece of the pie.

Diaries were the sham. How many 25 to 54-year-old men wrote down in diaries they listened to Rush Limbaugh from noon to three, five days a week? All the dittoheads within M25-54 did. In reality they were in the middle of the work day and maybe got to hear some of Rush while they were on their lunch break. There's no way they listened three full hours a day for five straight days.

I'm not picking on Rush here. We could say the same for any longtime personality who has become a part of enough people's routine. The average person thinks "I listen to Joe Shmo in the Morning" and they write down Joe's name in the diary. They like Joe, so they write down they listen from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. In reality, they only listen to Joe for about 5 minutes when the alarm goes off and they take some time to get out of bed and get into the kitchen (where they put the TV on) and then they listen again during their 25 minute commute.

PPM is helping us to see which stations (and therefore, which commercials) are really in earshot of listeners. Much better for advertisers. Not good for stations and personalities who benefited from the diary system.

"It's Dive By Hearing" NOT LISTENING!!!! Did the person chose the station??? Why do think SBS is protesting PPM in court? Because most business don't play Spanish stations or Urban stations. They play Classic Hits stations so they don't offend customers and most people know the songs. Plain and simple. It's the PPM that's the sham. How else do you explain Q105 going from 18th place before the PPM to the top 5 after it hit Tampa Bay?? Nothing that they did changed, only PPM. That's what changed!

I kind of got to disagree as well JoJo. Ratings aren't about who is "choosing" the station. In my opinion, they're to determine what stations are tuned in the most and how many and which demographics are exposed to them. It doesn't matter if I chose to listen to a particular station or not. The fact is on occasion, as a 38 year old male, I may be exposed to Wild 94.1, maybe not listening, but EXPOSED to Wild 94.1. Is that "my" choice? No. But as an advertiser, I'd like to buy based on the fact of exposure, and not who's choosing. A smart advertiser who knows demographics should already know where their audience is listening and should buy accordingly. I may not choose to listen to WDUV but I can sure tell you a few places I go where it's on. And guess what? I've heard a commercial break or two while I've been "exposed". The diary system sucked.

The only thing that will make PPM better is more meters in the field. I would hope we can all agree on that.

I've dealt with the diary and was a cold caller with Birch when they were still doing call outs. If all the methods could be employed, there might be a better sampling, until then, it is going to be what's accepted. Which credit bureau would you like to use, name your poison.
To expect perfection is to expect zero tolorance deaths on the highway. Somebody is going to die. At least in radio and tv, there is another job or profession to fall back on... Even for you JoJo. ;)
