No big surprises here! Country is the leader and the battle continues between WSOC and KCountry. The Fox continues to dominate and out shadow The Ride, actually there is no competition and The Ride is "just there". Interesting to see that the Hispanic stations are not making any movement to speak of. Hard to think that WNOW can continue to nip at the heels of Norsan's cluster and they are what, 75 miles away? Radio continues to amaze me in Charalotte, there are opportunities but nobody has taken the right steps to put some excitement into the market.

Wow! No WKQC naysayers this time around. Lite has rebounded nicely under new leadership so big props to Darla. Now, all this market needs is a true Hot AC. HUGE untapped 35-44 potential there.

They tried it before on 107.9 and it didn't do well. Tight playlists of songs that the majority likes gets higher ratings than a larger playlist, even though it drives some listeners nuts.

Mike, I'm gonna challenge you on that one. If "some" programmers tested songs "they" don't like as well as the ones they do, they might find the universe of hit music is a little bit bigger than their teeny tiny li'l brains.

Challenge not accepted I actually agree in part. I think over the years some damage has been done by the ever shrinking playlists. By that I mean that there are lots of hit songs that have become unfamiliar to listeners so they don't test well. They have to be exposed all over again.

Actually I think to justify their existence programmers have complicated the simple action of playing songs on the radio.

Nice showing for 94.1, 106.5 is tied with 95.7 (!), and WQNC is above a 3 share. 96.1 is still losing listeners...

Charlotte is too conservative a market for a broad Hot AC playlist (unfortunately) - every time The Link tried it, ratings went down, which is why they went for the personality-radio thing instead in the early 2000s

I know there are people in and around the city that would love a broad playlist, but you gotta remember The Link is reaching out to really conservative areas of North and South Carolina, and in general they want to hear what's familiar

106.5 The End can't even really play Mumford & Sons cause it's just too "out there" for the market

Atlantaboy, I think you are totally wrong. In the first place, Hot Ac is basically a very conservative format--after all, all it is is CHR without the black artists. OTOH, WLNK's talk format is pretty out there--basically broadcasting to the liberated woman. I'd wager the Link's rating problems are totally "linked" to an almost total lack of listeners in places like Rowan NC and Chester SC. I'm sure a lot of people are shaking their heads that the 2 country stations came up first in the latest PPM's. I believe that has more to do with the 2 horrendous AC stations in CLT and the lack of a Hot AC. KKT and SOC are two very well done stations and listeners respond to that.

OK, I'll admit I have not had a chance to listen The Link lately. Has it had some massive change in personality? Matt & Ramona are not exactly for the "liberated woman" - it's just a humorous morning show in the afternoon.

I miss The Pam Stone Show. That was a hilarious radio show that anyone could enjoy.

96.1's ratings keep going down. The switch from The Beat to Channel have not helped.

CC has been launching some classic hits stations (SFO, Jax)- late 60s-early/mid 80s, NOT like the 60s based oldies 96.1 played as Magic when it flipped. Today's "classic hits" is viable, successful, and profitible if done properly. Hmm...

Yeah, I just mentioned that on the Raleigh board. CC used to not seem like a very classic hits/oldies/whatever friendly company, but that seems to be changing (they renamed a station in Milwaukee "Oldies 95.7" and it's doing well)....I doubt they would do that format on 96.1 though because of 99.7 and 102.9, but who knows.

The type of oldies 96.1 was playing (mostly 60s with some 70s) is a niche format. Classic hits ('64-~'85 with the emphasis on the 70s) is very viable and is very different than what Magic 96 played....like CBS-FM. It's almost a different format...
