What were KNBC-AM 680 Ratings and KNBC-FM 99.7 ratings before they became KNBR? I figured the reason the KCBS call letters stayed in SFO instead of migrating to LA was because they had years of high ratings even before the all-news era.

KNBC-FM ratings would have been negligible in those days - not sure about 680 AM. I'm pretty sure the first high-rated station format on 99.7 was KYUU in the late 70s. 680 would have been KNBR by the early 60s, when the calls migrated to Channel 4 in LA. By the mid or late 60s, KNBR was a popular MOR station - probably not as high rated as KSFO, but no slough either. David Kaye could possibly answer that.

When CBS decided to change KNXT in LA to KCBS-TV and KNX-FM to KCBS-FM, it was different. The FCC no longer required station owners to keep call letters within the same market, as they did in the early 60s. So I don't know the answer, but since the ratings for both KCBS 740 in San Francisco and KNX 1070 in LA were high, CBS probably decided it was stupid to change things.

I loved the General Tire commercials because the jingle was catchy and it was the first time I'd ever heard a drum (a tympani) act as a bass, and change keys! I thought that was awesome -- still do. Wish I could find a copy of that jingle.

For those interested in hearing the jingly from General Tires here is a link. Rebecca

Maybe Firestone Tire and Rubber had the better jingles back in the 60's and 70"s. "The name thats known is Firestone where the rubber meets the road!" Remember those? Mostly on TV. Were these General tire jingles produced by Johnny Mann?

This was a re-sing and a re-orchestration of the original from 15 years earlier, changing it from a catchy tune to a sort of "Up With People" musical overture. Very strange. Also, the tympani changing keys is not apparent because there is some synth that's supposed to sound like a tympani along with some synth that's supposed to sound like a tuba or a bass where the tympani should be. Wish I had the original for comparison.

Thanks for the link!

David: From what I could find, General Tire started the "Sooner Or Later You'll Own Generals" in 1973. So the link above, from 1981, is probably just evolution.

I never heard the full sing on KFRC, just the donut.

The earliest one I can find online is a TV commercial compilation from 1975. Fortunately, it's the second spot, only 35 seconds in. Unfortunately, it's a bad transfer, so the pitch varies, but it's enough to hear the bones of the jingle (probably from the original 1973 session).:

Thanks for the link. This is the version I'm thinking of, but unfortunately they cut it off before the end, and it's the end that gives me the chills. I have sent an email to Ron Dante, who is likely to have created and sung it. (He also was the lead behind the Archies ("Sugar Surgar"), the Cufflinks ("Tracy"), and lots of other songs.

Unless my mind is playing tricks on me I remember hearing the jingle prior to 1973, almost always in KFRC's 20-20 newscasts. Unfortunately, all the KFRC airchecks of that era that I can find either don't have the newscasts or they don't have the spots in them.

Ballpark guess for fall '64:

1. KRLA
2. KMPC
3. KNX
4. KFI
5. KFWB
6. KPOL
7. KLAC
8. KFAC
9. KABC
10.KHJ
11.XETRA

I was stationed in Long Beach from May '63 thru July '64. Virtually all my buddies (military and civilian alike) listened to either KRLA or KFWB save a very few that were Country fans.

David: I found a clean, in tune, color version of the same spot:

I've dug into my KHJ and KFRC airchecks. As late as the end of May, 1972, General Tire was still using the "There's A Tough New Generation Of Generals" ad. It doesn't seem to be on YouTube, but it's in the Jimmy Rabbitt 5/24/72 KHJ aircheck in my collection on Reelradio.

Google indicates the "Tough New Generation" slogan was in use in General's print ads (in LIFE) as far back as spring of 1970. I can't find any indication that "Sooner Or Later" was used before that, and there's an early 1973 aircheck of Robert W. Morgan on KHJ also in my collection at Reelradio where he has a live General Tires read over a generic music bed...it's neither " Tough New Generation" nor "Sooner Or Later", so I'm pretty comfortable with later in 1973 as the start date for the campaign.
