PRATT TURNS DOWN CLEAR CHANNEL, AGAIN.

Holmberg only held serve under Stern for a very short time as he was still living off Pratt’s momentum. And if he is such an “icon” in his own right, then why is he still using and living off of Pratt’s material such as Big Red Radio, Red Cards, U-Fest and even the KUPD logo which Pratt designed. He has had 8 years to do something original. We are still waiting. Secretly, he must be Pratt’s biggest fan but too insecure to admit it. Shortly after that 2002 article, he was crushed by Stern, Pratt and KZON. It would happen again if he ever had to actually compete in the rock format. You know it. I know it. And most of all, he knows it.

I think you're selling John Holmberg short. I don't dispute that Dave created "Big Red Radio", "Red Cards", or "U-Fest", and made them hugely succesful, but the fact that these things haven't disappeared despite Dave's leaving KUPD is, in my opinion, a testament to John's ability to incorporate them into his own style and keep them going as hugely successful things, thusly making them KUPD things and not Dave things.

I've known John since broadcast school and I've always been amazed at how creative and talented he is. John can make almost anything funny and is as talented an air personality as anyone I've ever known. I knew back then that he was going to have the type of success in this industry that most of us can only wish for. And he has proven that.

I don't understand the absolutes of those who think that you can only like one or the other. Or that only one is talented and the other isn't. Just like with ice cream (and beverages) I enjoy many different varieties that are completely different from each other.

Well said Russ, I used to listen to Pratt the last six years or so of his show on KUPD. I mainly listened out of default because I liked the muisc on KUPD, Dave wasn't really my cup of tea but he was the best thing on at the time. That being said, I still have a huge amount of respect for him as he has had ratings success on three different stations and three different formats (yes the Zone format was dramatically different than KUPD's) in the last 25+ years. He does seem like a nice guy both in and out of radio and I could understand how people could like his show.

Sorry my first post was posted before I was finished.

When Holmberg hit the airwaves I had finally found a morning show that I could call mine. Until then, like I said I listen to Pratt mainly out of default along with channel surfing the dial from time to time. Now my morning radio has stayed locked on Holmberg, even though I have kind of grown out of the KUPD music format. I think John is very funny and talented, he is quick witted and the chemistry with his partners is very good as well. They actually sound like they are having fun and being real with each other. Sure his show can be a bit juvenile at times, but I want something funny to start my work day.

As far as the red card, big red radio etc, I think thats a station thing more than anything. They may have been created by Pratt but they are used in all day parts and are probably a choice of the PD/management to use and not something in Holmbergs control.

Bottom line both men are very talented in their own rights, they have a totally different approach in my opinion and should be commended for their success. I am sure there are plenty of people who liked both shows, just as there are plenty who find on or the other un-listenable.

Guess you never heard Holmberg's character "Billy Pratt" - AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWLL RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!!!

Sums up the 'legacy' right there.

Hey Nik, guess you never read Pratt’s book. Sums up the “legacy” right there. If Holmgren’s listeners could actually read, maybe he could write a book too!

Right, because we know there are tens of thousands of copies of Pratt's book in circulation on the reservations...

Don't like either of them, "wacky" radio DJ's are about as welcome in my house as Amway salesmen or Scientologists.

Does that mean if you ever want to sell, it will take a lot longer than 53 days? ;D

That particular person, while very talented, has a pretty nasty record as being one of the Cult's biggest goons....
