Sorry my first post was posted before I was finished.
Well said Russ, I used to listen to Pratt the last six years or so of his show on KUPD. I mainly listened out of default because I liked the muisc on KUPD, Dave wasn't really my cup of tea but he was the best thing on at the time. That being said, I still have a huge amount of respect for him as he has had ratings success on three different stations and three different formats (yes the Zone format was dramatically different than KUPD's) in the last 25+ years. He does seem like a nice guy both in and out of radio and I could understand how people could like his show.
When Holmberg hit the airwaves I had finally found a morning show that I could call mine. Until then, like I said I listen to Pratt mainly out of default along with channel surfing the dial from time to time. Now my morning radio has stayed locked on Holmberg, even though I have kind of grown out of the KUPD music format. I think John is very funny and talented, he is quick witted and the chemistry with his partners is very good as well. They actually sound like they are having fun and being real with each other. Sure his show can be a bit juvenile at times, but I want something funny to start my work day.
As far as the red card, big red radio etc, I think thats a station thing more than anything. They may have been created by Pratt but they are used in all day parts and are probably a choice of the PD/management to use and not something in Holmbergs control.
Bottom line both men are very talented in their own rights, they have a totally different approach in my opinion and should be commended for their success. I am sure there are plenty of people who liked both shows, just as there are plenty who find on or the other un-listenable.
