PREDICTION

If you heard Scott and BR this morning (thursday) you would know that this may very well be the best morning show in S.D. I know most of you on this board don't live here, and are bloviating based on you past experiences....but for those of you who do live here and can understand the value of good radio, you will know that the multi-person, expensive morning shows including The Show, Mikey, DSC and Jeff and jer, are fat, lazy and weak. They aren't getting it done. Scott & BR with a small staff are really blowing up.

so let's review....

An FM station in San Francisco just dropped music for sports, joining the nationwide trend.

And KIOZ is now in 18th place while KUSS is in 21st. I have spelled out the ten reasons why I think KIOZ will soon flip to sports. I think the fact that they continue to flatline for 3 books in a row, would be number 11.

However KUSS is not happening either. Either way, Clear Channel can not afford to have 2 of its 5 stations in the potty. Especially when one of them has a big fat staff.

Remember you heard it here first.

Hacksaw was not on the air today because of the Padres? Did he take advantage of the day off and take a meeting with anyone from Clear Channel?

Has anyone from CC reached out to Scott and BR to ask them if they would like to be free of an AM station that wears down its audience with those awful Mexican PSA's they play over and over and over?

Will 1360 soon get religion (or brokered hourly shows pushing colon cleanser)?

Damn this is getting good.

As a 1090 listener I gotta say it's a great station - thoroughly professional - Scott and BR are most entertaining and I am glad the resigned, the station is well put together and can be clearly received all over the west, including way down in Sonora, Mexico and out here in Arizona. I know, because I listen to it outside of the San Diego market I shouldn't speak up, BUT consider how this station carrying the Padres and giving the Chargers, intelligent and interesting coverage helps to build and sustain a fan base for these beloved by some of us teams, and promotes the San Diego and Tijuana area as recreational and sports destinations throughout the west. No FM signal anywhere can do that. Sorry, no can do.

By the way - there are lots of Chargers fans out here, complete with stickers and flags.

What's the hangup with the Mexican Department of Tourism spots? They are interesting, colorful and take the mind on a quick imaginary trip to other places-refreshing.

What the hell, why the glee for 1090 XEPRS to fail?

There is no glee for 1090 to fail. In fact, I hope it doesn't because that would be one more nail in the coffin for the death of AM. But come on, do those Mexican PSA's really not bother you? They drive me crazy. But I agree, 1090 is a solid station right now. John Lynch is gone but he put together a good, solid product. It's hard to deny that the nationwide trend is to put sports on FM.

CYHMN, Do you understand that the Mexican PSA's are required? You seem to have a lot of opinions but not very many facts. Did you know that every Mexican licensee is required to run the Mexican National Hour? Did you know they're also required to devote a certain amount of airtime to Mexican PSA's?

Don't ever bet on John Lynch being "gone."

Of course I know the PSA's are required on Mexican stations. The point of this entire "prediction" thread was that a sports format (i.e. the station now airing on 1360) would migrate to a sister Clear Channel FM station, either KUSS or KIOZ. And the idea was that the team of Scott and BR may find it attractive to leave 1090 and segue over to an American FM station that does not have to carry these annoying PSA's. Do you understand?

And while I have not heard that CC is seriously considering this, I am postulating that I can not see how they wouldn't be, especially considering the awful signal of 1360 and the poor performances of KUSS and KIOZ. Every insider I spoke with agrees that this may not be inevitable but that it surely could happen if certain things fall into place.

Holy excrement! Every single insider? It could happen if certain things fall into place? Damn! If certain things happen to fall into place I would win the lotto and buy France too. I love the wine and cheese.

I just want you to understand that the fact you know Mexican PSA's are mandatory have nothing to do with anything. Except to prove my contention that Scott & BR may want to move to an American FM station instead of staying at a Mexican AM where they have to deal with them. Do you get that point Mr. Engineer?

You don't need to get pissy. This is just a fun exercise about what could happen in the local radio industry. I simply made a prediction and backed it up with some facts and some conjecture. I spelled out 11 reasons why I think this prediction will come to fruition, and I spoke to people WHO WORK IN SD RADIO and they told me they thought it was plausible. If you disagree or agree it really doesn't matter. If my prediction proves to be right, fine. If it doesn't, so what?

While I made my prediction and spelled out why I thought it would happen, I must admit I've heard nothing from the CC camp about this going down. So either 1/I'm off base, or 2/they are keeping it as secret as the Bin Laden affair, or 3/they may be waiting until they know there will be an NFL season and launch Sam Diego's first FM sports station with the accompanying "NFL is back" hoopla.

In the meantime, 1090 keeps kicking ass with good strong numbers and a lot of major advertisers. It's not looking so good at DSC and Jack FM. Today I heard a spot on DSC for some deli. It must be a dollar-a-holler time at 100.7.

I think DSC is doing just fine..Listen through the entire show and you can hear a wide variety of sponcers.Clear Channel charges way the heck too much for advertising. If a deli wants a bit of airtime, then good for them doing it on a top rated morning show like the DSC.

I finally got word from the Clear Channel fortress... apparently the VP of programming who oversees Clear Channel rock stations was just in town. Word is that they are considering doing a sports/rock dual format which CC has done in other markets, or they will simply put sports exclusively on KIOZ. It seems like may just be something to this prediction after all.

Interesting. 1360 has a terrible signal in San Diego county. Sports on the Chargers flagship station is a good call--and a nice very-educated prognosis.

Nicely done.

"AT THIS TIME"....there are no plans for Clear Channel to flip either 95.7 or 105.3 away from what they are doing and switch to sports. I would bet $10 however that once the NFL strike is over, that would be the time they would switch....and get a lot of extra PR juice that way.

If the NFL strike ends and they still don't flip, then this was all a futile waste of time and I will have to admit that even I spelled out 11 good reasons, that I am full of crap. Then again, CC might be waiting until some talent contracts are up at 1090. Because 1360 just doesn't have the talent juice.

This is not good news for Jefferson Pilot which will not (potentially) have the country pie to itself, and it means that 94.9, which is doing almost as poorly as 105.3, won't get a gift from heaven by potentially losing one of its 2 key competitors.

If this were to happen, and I really don't think it will. (CC has too much time and money invested into the branding of the station) I believe that 94.9 will not get any ratings boost from this, 100.7 will, 101.5, and maybe 91.1.

94.9 is just too far gone, 91X and 94.9 have a real niche audience and there is just not enough of the alternative rock pie to make ratings or money off of.

Again with the right programming 105.3 can be fixed right now! If someone with the passion for rock music (like Jimmy Steele has for CHR) were to take the reigns, and CC gave them the power the station can be fixed!

come on...how much "time and money" does clear channel have invested in country 95.7? Let me answer that for you. Absolutely nothing (to paraphrase a lyric from "War" by Edwin Starr.) This has been a loss leader, throwaway station for CC San Diego for about 3 or 4 years. Why would you say something so obviously false... suggesting that CC has spent money building up 95.7?

You may be correct that there are too many modern rock stations in SD to make a decent living. And you are very correct that 105.3 could be corrected with a new PD.

But what effort has CC SD spent on promoting 95.7 or 105.3? This is a broke radio station group that has no money. Do you understand this KOGO?

It has been almost exactly nine years since CC took over the Califormula stations including Hot Country, then on 99.3 FM.

there was a great deal of money invested in 95.7 to begin with. Tony and Kris were a significant investment and there was a great deal of marketing dollars invested in the first couple of years as well. It certainly hasn't be the case in the last few years but if you look at since the beginning it's a different story.

94/9 changed drastically when Mike Halloran was shown the door. It really is about the music.
