Predictions 2006

Ok gang, we had our wish lists, now it's time for a tradition and that is predictions for DC, Richmond and Hampton Roads. I will include DC given that I go to Northern Va and DC a lot in my spare time, please bear in mind that these probably will not happen, but it's worth a shot!

Washington: Expect a MAJOR shake up at DC101 when Elliot leaves for Sirius to do afternoons on Stern's station. Don and Mike leave Live 106.7 to do AM drive for DC101 and end up with a LARGE radio network. Live 106.7 will end up losing The Sports Junkies due to low ratings and sadly, a great station will end up belly up with only Mancow in the morning then holding it up along with the redksins on sundays. Elsewhere, WTOP will hit number 1 and Z104 will go sports talk with the Junkies in the morning. WHUR will be right behind WTOP and as for Mix107.3, they finally break down and get rid of the DJ's and go back to the sucessful 80's station Q107.

Richmond: WWLB will go jockless until the first week in Feb. Going to end up being the best of Richmond radio past, merging into one station. Radio One will continue to be the top draw and somehow, someway, Cox will throw in the towel. CC will bring in D&M from DC to do mornings on WRXL to replace elliot and the X by the end of the year will hit the top 5 due to Don and Mike in the morning becoming a huge smash. WDYL goes to a 96X like hybrid as they pick up Mancow in the morning. WRIR will get to their new tower and be able to attract more listeners for their base. WCVE goes all classical except for Morning Edition and All Things Considered. One last thing, The planet has a DEEPER drop because of Hungate's departure and landing on 96.9 The Rock. It does cover north of the river in MOST areas. Planet drops below the top 10 for a bulk of the year.

Hampton Roads: In a deal that Stern had with KLSX where the owners didn't have to worry about the FCC when Stern did something they hated, CC makes a deal with MAX105 and puts in D&M into the Hampton Roads market. Hot102 will end up going down the drain even though things are getting back online for them. The station's owner sells tehe station and the station becomes a feed for the Tide, but still the tide suffers that playlist from hell and will never recover from it. 103Jamz will still be number one along with 2WD. 96X is finally switched over to 106.1, switching up with The Zone. 106.1 the X keeps Mancow and the ratings stay the same. As for Zone, it's tough going. Stronger signal, but still trying to go after so many stations, it's going to be a hard sell.

In 2006,

Hot 102.1 will blow up. Sinclair will buy the remains of 102.1 to simulcast with The Zone@1061. 96-X will become "HOT 96-X" with hot talk, Nascar and sports with some alternative.
And 107.7 Goes Country!!! as WKVK "K-107".
______________

Here is my 2 cents...lol

Richmond: I'm not really familiar with to many of the stations in Richmond besides the two urbans...so I'll leave my predictions with them. I predict that Power will continue to climb and either tie or top the Beat. Until Aaron Maxwell over at the Beat steps up the game and stops the old school generic programming, I don't see them moving up any.

Hampton Roads: I have a couple of predictions here. I predict that CC will dump either Lite or Cool before the end of 2006. Although "The Wave" will make some gain, in the end I think 2WD will remain in the top 5 due to their heritage status. BOB-FM will remain steady.
I also predict that while Z104 will take a hit the first part of the year with the departure of Mike Klein, in the long run they will recover. I think that before the end of the year Michael Bryan will either come off the air completely or move to another shift and someone else will be doing afternoons. As far as The Zone, they will still be around but will continue to struggle until they get a larger stick and find an identity other than "we please everybody". I predict that they will dump the "all music" mornings and get a morning show.

As far as urbans, 103 Jamz will remain on top and despite popular belief I think that Hot will stick around but continue to struggle. For some reason I think On Top is actually content with Hot's performance thus far (I'm wondering why also..lol). The two Urban AC's (95-7 and Kiss) will keep their current status, though 95-7 will improve in mornings with the departure of Sonny Andre.

Sorry it's so long everyone!!

Dave, one note about country music down there, WGH owns the market out there for it, especially after WCMS went to 100.5 The Max. Knowing how CC really has done poorly in marketing that station, I would not be surprised to see 107.7 go country, as it is the frequency that CC I doubt is betting on making money.

HOT 96X, sounds like a norfolk version of WJFK(before the infinity fraud known as Live106.7). I would definitly listen to it if they added Don and Mike in the afternoons knowing that they will keep Mancow in the mornings.

I agree with you that Hot102.1 is going to blow up. I just don't see it surviving too much longer.

I fail to understand the theory of Dick Hungate bringing stellar ratings to 96.9. Over the past year or so, his ratings on the Planet were medicre at best; why would they be better on a station that barely impacts the Richmond market? Please indulge me with with the logic behind that. I do agree that Mancow or some other nationally syndicated morning show will end up on WDYL. It's the only way to compete with Elliot. If Elliot goes to Sirus, X will take a hit, as he's the big ratings winner on that station.

Because of the contraversial nature of his dismissal from 96.5, there are possibly many "fans" who will tune into 96.9 just to see what he is doing. Things like this sometimes produce a temporary ratings spike.

I have to give Dick Hungate tons of credit. He has made his departure well known, yet done it with taste.

Now...the big thing: I predict Y101 will still linger through 2006, though I wonder if Oldies 107.3 and the Wolf wouldn't change up frequencies.

Cheers

Since predictions are free and easy - I predict the opposite - and that many who listen to the Planet have not even noticed the change...no offense to Dick...but music jocks just don't have the cache any more any where...too much competition from other media.

Also, while I respect him a great deal - he's worked and programmed in some sizeable markets - enough of the "Helped invent the classic rock format" already. Hey, "I thought of the idea of playing no currents - just library." Wow. Especially to trumpet it now - when ROCK radio in general is in the dumper nationwide....

I think the classic rock format is fading and thankfully so. You can't expect dubious (debatable) innovations of 20 plus years ago are still going to apply to today's market. Talk about flogging a dead horse. There are the diehards who need to hear, "Stairway to Heaven" and "Free Bird" 3 to 4 times daily, but the classic rock format is drifting to the fringes of mass appeal. Can the market handle 2 classic rock formats? I think (hope) not...

This year, I think Liberty will make the biggest jump in the Richmond ratings game...
______________
