Predictions for 2006

First off, Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to all. Taking a break from family and the festivities, and since no one has done it, I figured I would embark on the annual predictions post. Here's a go of it:
1. PRO-FM: More of the same. Unless there's a dramatic drop in the ratings, look for more conservative, often boring, CHR.
2. Coast: Still will not pull the Jack trigger, but will stress more of the Variety theme.
3. 'HJY: Hopefully more of the same, as the market's Only Station With a Budget remains strong.
4. WBRU: No changes here.
5. WRZE: Perhaps a little less Rhythmic and a little more broad in terms of playlist.
6. WCTK: Again, no changes foreseen.
7. WSKO-FM: Something will have to be done with the Score, but I have yet to figure out what. With the Red Sox coming aboard WEEI-FM in April, the final nail should be hammered into the Score's coffin. A cheap solution for Citadel would be a Jack format - and we know how budget-conscious Citadel is - but such a station might be a competitor for the older-skewing audience that Citadel covets for PRO-FM. I do not foresee Talk of any variety on 99.7, as it would once again be a direct competitor to other Citadel properties. Classic Rock, Classic Hits, or even Traditional Oldies are all possibilities, but 2006 should be an interesting year for 99.7 FM.
8. WEEI-FM: The addition of the Red Sox should be lucrative.
9. Lite: David Jones should keep the ship stable. The rest of the station will remain highly boring, I am sure.
10. Hot 106: I do not see any changes here either.
11. Fun: JR's 12th year on the job should not bring many changes.
12. WPRO: More conservative talk, less balance. Perhaps we will see a shake-up for AM Drive. WPRO will most definitely take a hit with the loss of the Red Sox.
13. WHJJ: Time will tell if Glover, Bart, etc. will make it. Here's to keeping a liberal or two around, for the sake of balance. Finally, Arlene is not going anywhere.
14: WSKO: It will be interesting to see if the AM side will survive. Ratings are bleak. Perhaps a return to Standards is in order?

Any thoughts?

Pretty much in agreement with you on everything.I do see a format change on 99.7 comming I heard this a while ago. Although Citadel could probably afford to put Air America on 790.Not a ratings buster but they can afford it with WPRO to set off the balance.
Would like to see WHJJ pick up John and Jeff overnites.
Yankees to WPRO if they decide to drop one of "The Scores".

You did not mention B101.

B101 will more than likely tweak itself throughout the year probably adding more poppy 80 songs. Eyrithmics,Go-Go's,Madness etc............

Almost forgot, WEEI possibly beating WPRO and WHJJ or at least tying with WPRO.
They are very strong now without The SOX and no local stuff. The best numbers ever on 103.7 including everything from RI-104 to WFNX simulcasting and local.
Edited by kenwood on 12/26/05 12:56 AM.

you 2 and others have been talking about a format change on the score for what 5 YEARS NOW!!!!!! when are you going to drop it?? the rumours from you 2 have been right on man, zingers baby!!!!!! 2 things that you hacks havent figured out. 1)the score is sold as part of a cluster of stations which means that if they pull the numbers that they have, theyll be fine because the budget isnt enourmous. and 2)for the all mighty WEEI FM. what if they lose the sox in 2006 to a group in boston that would allow citadel to get the sox back and put it on the score??? maybe if people on this board were 'really' clued in they might see that.

Slappy, I heard about 6 months ago that 99.7 was sold to greater media.Obvious it has nt been.
As for WEEI-AM losing the Sox in 2006. DOES NOT MEAN WEEI-FM can't put in a bid for Providence. So the SOX could be on WEEI-FM in Providence while let's say for the sake of arguing WBZ picks up the Flagship. This could happen.

I can almost guarantee if 99.7 flips on Jan 1, 2006 on the second someone here will predict another format change on Feb 1.
Edited by kenwood on 12/26/05 04:31 AM.

That's a big what if and the fact is The Score has no numbers. I think it's sad in this day and age when a station with a negligible listenership can survive because of big brother in the same cluster. With that mentality you can bring back some of the smaller music AM stations that used to flourish in Rhode Island, sell each to a major market player, and have some smaller market community radio irregardless of whether or not anyone is listening. I think you're more angry that WEEI is the sports winner in Rhode Island than anything that's said on this board.

> LITE ROCK 105's Charlie Jefferds will be out the door in 06'

That may happen but they'd better be cautious about how they handle it and he probably won't care anyway.

My predictions just off the cuff and these are really out there off the top of my head and not based on opinion or anything all that solid:
No changes at PRO-FM
Charles out at HJY
No changes at WCTK
New morning guy at B101
Someone leaves Coast on his own for a bigger market. Maybe two leave Coast for a bigger market.
Ron St Pierre out at WPRO AM
Keri leaves WSAR
DePetro back at HJJ

These predictions are off the cuff as well:

No changes at PRO-FM
Charles out evenings @ HJJ, perhaps @ HJY as well
No changes at WCTK
No opinion about mornings @ B101
There could be a lot of changes at Coast
The SCORE...both AM & FM...who knows?

As for Ron St. Pierre...if they are going to continue to call it the WPRO Morning News...do more news! And more LOCAL news at that. St. Pierre is fine as a segment traffic cop, and has a lot of institutional knowledge of the market.

As for John DePetro...if he comes back, with his tail between his legs after flopping in Boston he'll ironically be in a position to have WHJJ and WPRO vying for his services.(within reason of course)However, potential internal problems with his return at both places are that; Arlene Violet is jealous of him, and would not welcome his return to HJJ, and at PRO he'd clash big time with Dan Yorke.

Kerri @ WSAR? No disresepct intended, but in my opinion...ho-hum.

>>Mediafan, I think you hit the nail on the head.
In fact ,Violet is no friend of Depetro.
He`s not ALLOWED back at HJJ.
Dan Yorke will tackle Depetro and it will take a riot unit to
seperate them.
StPeirre is safe , he wants it to stay that way.
The female afternoon host at SAR will still be there,as long as she
agrees to work 10 hr days. Her show is Love Barney Frank, Hate Bush.
Love Barney Frank etc. Boring ,Boring etc...
Alan.

I'll go out on limbs here
PRO-FM: Just as Lite didn't say farewell to Gary De Graide earlier because they had no back up plan maybe Kerry Collins is PRO-FM's back up plan.He spent years at KC101 as a daytime dj and music director but now does nights at PRO-FM.I say Kerry is the back up plan to move into afternoon drive/MD this year.
COAST: Joan and husband are probably dangerously close to a money cap but Lite's hiring Jones could delay tampering with the Coast morning show unless they let Brian go.Also I agree more variety with the music.
HJY: Charles goes from both the AM and FM.I'm sure putting him on HJY was more a matter of finding something else for him to do in this day of multi-tasking and Charles probably being the type who looks at the show itself along with show prep as his job for the day.I definitely predict he's gone this year.
Quinn and Cantara move up to afternoons and can still have their shows run on the CC stations in Northern New England as they do now.Brangiforte moves to nights.
CTK: As good as a job as he does I am still surprised Robby Bridges ended up here and wouldn't rule out a move to a major market for someone who spent time driving to NY and Philly to weekend for a time.
B101: Continuous 12 plus decline in numbers they won't mind since they have probably weeded out a good chuck of older demographic listeners.
Lite: Jefferds is definitely the next to go but I would give it at least another year.
Edited by FARID DON'T LIKE IT on 12/27/05 12:54 PM.

Unless the Bristol Administration is over after nearly 8 years, I do not see why Davey Morris or Tanya Cruise would be leaving. Kerry Collins probably comes cheaper than either of those two, but Davey is Tony Bristol's righthand man, and I do not foresee him leaving unless Tony is sent to the beach.

CC has shown more willingness than other owners in the market to pay the big bucks, especially to keep local talent grounded. In order to keep stability at Coast - unless they go jockless and become a Jack clone - I see Joan and her husband remaining at Coast.

I do not understand the hatred of Charles that exists on this board. He is one of the most talented voices on PM Drive anywhere. His show is fresh, and after all these years, he has become a Heritage personality. I do not think he is going anywhere. 'HJY is his home base; perhaps he will give up the WHJJ gig, but I do not foresee him leaving 'HJY any time soon.

Perhaps Robby is just looking for the stability that 'CTK offers? And his family and friends are all in the area, as he used to like to point out to his audience that he is a Cranston native.

Agreed.

If Citadel wants to save money, Jeffords will be victim number two.

Good point about WPRO. Even if the Score stays on one or both of its frequencies, I also believe WPRO will pick up the Yankees to offset losing the Red SOx.

Why hatred of Geoff (goodTime) Charlie?

>Hatred for Geoff (GooDTime) Charlie,WHY???
He promotes use of ALL illegal drugs.
Every woman in that building is terrifed of him.
He visiously attacks EVERYONE in the business.
The Hells Angels he brings into HJJ HJY.to intimadate.
He bashes people who can`t defend themselves.
etc...
just to name some, since you asked.
If he were just on FM,that would be 1 thing,
when he came on HJJ at night as a host and now OTHER FMers
want to become hosts,PLEASE, just PLEASE.
He and other FM ers have great VOICES, THATS IT!!!

I know what you're saying with the above but am looking at the possibility of some decisions being out of Tony's hands and I really don't believe if a decision came from over him he would put his job on the line to save someone.

I'm just basing opinion on CC's recent history of phasing out heritage in Providence.

I don't think Charles does a bad job but again it's the CC phase-out of heritage. If they can get away with it then they will and the show is going downhill.Charles will never pick up new listeners.

He may also be at one of the few stations where he can run the show the way he wants.

You seem to hate him for off-the-air reasons. Whether or not your accusations are correct, people seem to like him and he is one of the best known personalities in RI radio.

All the anti-Charles message board posts in the world will not take him off the air. If you don't like him, don't listen.
______________

Again, the primary reason why many on this board seem to dislike him is plain and simple - ideology. I happen to know two women who work in the building who claim that your accusation above is baseless. Moreover, I have seen no evidence that Charles, "visiously attacks EVERYONE in the business."

In Providece, I do not see CC cutting away at Heritage as much as you do. Are you referring to changes at Coast over the past few years? Other than more weekend syndication, 'HJY doesn't seem to have been affected. Furthermore, it is hard to assert that B101 had much Heritage, although that is arguable.

Scott and Viking,
On air he says goverment should be overthrown and drugs(ALL) should be legalized.Says Godd--n 10 times a night.(FCC violation)
He has ATTACKED ,Steve Kass, Matt Allen, John Depetro,Helen Glover,Lori Johnson ,This WebSite etc..
Baseless and cruel attacks. He`ll stay on HJJ, Corwin and he are friends,
but he has less than 500 listeners a night. I haven`t listened since Aug.
Why are you guys defending him?

Then roll tape on his show, send it to the FCC and see what they do about it. Bellyaching about it on a regular basis on this board isn't going to change a thing.

As for your first comments, they're extreme opinions but his opinions. It's up to you to agree or disagree, that's it.
______________
