predictions for 2012

KTAR-FM continues to solidify its status as the "get off my lawn" station for geezers, as more younger listeners flee Mac & Gaydos - and the spectacle of hosts talking amongst themselves continues (but not with any callers, because they don't take listener calls during the week anymore.)

KFYI continues to solidify its status as this market's only true "talk radio" station, i.e., both its syndicated and local shows will continue to take listeners calls (making KTAR a Catskills vaudeville station by comparison.)

KJZZ will continue to get better numbers than KTAR and KFYI, and the NPR puzzle guy will no longer let callers play his games. Only the NPR co-hosts will be allowed to play. (Oh, I'm sorry, that's KTAR. My bad.)

Goldmine adds more hours of Radio Phoenix programming to its broadcast day.

KOOL adds "What's Going On" by 4 Non-Blondes to regular rotation.

KSLX adds Social Distortion. Finally.

KWSS-LP will continue to kick butt.

And 103.9 will finally pull the plug on its moldy-oldie 90's alternative format.

KTAR Arizona Sports 620 will finally act on its threat to dump local talk and become ESPN Radio 620 fulltime, except for Suns/D'backs/ASU games. Gambo & Doug Franz will have to seek employment elsewhere (but see below). Dave Burns will stay for pre- and post-game duties (highlights only - no post-game talk). Ron Wolfley will be back for football season.

Somebody, somewhere will fork over some dough to Gumpdusky and try yet another morning show on KDUS. Like the previous attempts, it'll last about 3 months.

Somebody, somewhere will fork over some dough to TMISU and take 860 off their hands. That amount will be about 5 times what a low-powered AM stick is worth. TMISU should just donate this station to the outfit running the gospel music on it, and take the tax deduction.

Gambo & Ash will return to XTRA 910. Or maybe XTRA 95.5? XTRA 102.5?

Doug Franz will resurface on another valley station. XTRA? KDUS, working for Rock & Manuch (yeah, that worked out well with Bruce Jacobs, didn't it)? Guns 'n Golf 1260?

Gumpdusky will finally replace that lamp timer on Lumberyard 1440 with a cheap PC that has an accurate clock and WAV files for a legal sign-on and sign-off that will work at the correct times. Maybe. ;D

If an off air Ancient Modulation station (13~Ten) can fetch $1m, then 8~Sixty should be worth more. Problem is TMISU sunk a bunch of bucks into the xmtr move and related engineering. Until an acceptable offer comes along, they'll LMA it.

Gambo & Ash will return to XTRA 910. Or maybe XTRA 95.5? XTRA 102.5?

The market is ready for an FM Sports Parkinglot. Not sure the market can take Wolfley on FM, though!

The new Nautel can do it all, so Gumpdusky will finally retire the lamptimer. I've asked Nurse Jeff to check with KOOL Listener Lauren and see if she can come up with a contest to guess when the new xmtr goes on the air at Lumberyard 14~Forty. hmmmm....that sounds like a great prediction for 2012!

More along the lines of "XX Sports 103.9" Along with Chuck & Vince, and some other up and coming local sports-talkers. They could round the rest of the schedule out with One-on...er...Sporting Ne...er...Yahoo Sports Radio, putting an end to 1060 The Fan. I don't think Gambo & Ash work well with Bickley & M.J.

I also predict that The Peak will still be scaring away their male listenership by playing Beyonce's "Single Ladies" as much as KOOL spins "Brown Eyed Girl" "Bette Davis Eyes"

KKNT starts running newscasts from 1995.

None of the 18 listeners notice.

"Dr." Bob's colon explodes, Bruce Jacobs, working as the Janitor at Clear Channel is sent in to clean up.

Mike Broomhead finishes his book, is astonished when he finds that Dick and Jane get home safely, vows to read another book this year.

Kim Komando tells someone to use Carbonite.

Barry Young passes out on air from an overdose of his own inflated self of smarm.

1480 goes off the air, but no one notices for 3 days.

The Lumberyard switches to a 24/7 "All Yoko Ono" format. Shortly thereafter, the lumberyard burns down. There is great rejoicing.

Bruce St. James wins a car race, nearly dies from shock.

During a live remote at the Phoenix Zoo, Terry Gilberg's voice sets off a pack of hyenas. She quits and continues to live with them, until her voice drives them away.

Matt Gerson makes his triumphant return to the airways with a live show on KKNT, but they mistakenly play one of his shows from 1998.

Hilarious!

While we're on the topic of hopeless causes, here's my predictions:

KOOL will not play "Brown Eyed Girl" nearly as many times as this board claims.

A dance station will not emerge and be wildly successful.

None of the rim shot signals will overtake the South Mountain signals.

Clear Channel will not take any risks with their stations.

Bonneville will not take any risks with their stations.

CBS will not take any risks with their stations.

Sandusky will not take any risks with their stations.

Dave Pratt will not go away, even though nobody's listening.

A stronger rimshot or an AM station will flip to Classic Country, seeing how well KSWG is doing with such a limited signal. Either that, or KSWG picks up the translators The Beat will abandon once the upgrade to 101.1 is finished.

KNIX continues to struggle, and probably will find a mediocre programmer to fill the hole by February.

X103.9 will shift programming direction to more current and local alternative. Dave Pratt will still play whatever he wants.

The beloved Lumberyard 1440 will get a tweak more than just a fancy-shmancy new Nautel!

KFYI is doing talk? When did they start that? All I ever hear are misguided diatribes from senile old bigoted white men.

Don't let anything happen to 103.9. At least it's a home for Dave Pratt. If 103.9 fails, the Pratt might end up taking another station down with him.

KPHX beat KOY KFNX KDUS and KFNN by finally making a .5 share? Now I owe someone $100 because I said that would never happen.

Ah, intriguing. Do you know something the rest of us lowly Lumberyard listeners don't? I sense that maybe some new songs will be added to the Goldmine's rotation! ;)

Well they played it again today at 12:38 PM, during the all-request nooner.

So I guess one of the listeners asked Jeffrey T. to play Bang 545, huh? ;)
