Predictions For 93.1 and 93.9

I see folks on the board are already speculating on what we'll see following the Christmas holidays on the Miami dial. Since we're still in November, there may even be another station or two that's considering making a flip around the New Year.

With regards to 93.9, they may not be ditching the Rhythmic A/C format altogether. One likely scenario is a Rhythmic leaning Gen X, or 90s-based radio station. Such a station is already being executed in Honolulu, also on 93.9 FM:

Another likely scenario is making 93.9 more current-based ala 103.5 KTU New York
http://www.ktu.com

The problem is that a KTU sound on 93.9 might effect the ratings numbers on sister station, Y-100 (which is enjoying some of its best numbers in decades).

With the new census figures coming out it also won't be out of the real of possibilities if 93.9 ends up with a Spanish-language format.

Or with 93.1 ditching Rock, perhaps 93.9 will go with an Hispanic-friendly Modern Rock station similar to 98.7 FM in L.A.

So what about 93.1? Well, if we're to go by the website it teases that a better party starts soon. This is a pretty clear reference to the format Dance format. So what you may end up hearing is something similar to a station like (internet-based) In The Club, which is part of Goom Radio:
http://www.goomradio.fr/radio/in-the-club

Or a Dance leaning CHR similar to Slam FM Holland
http://www.slamfm.nl

Then again, this could just be a decoy for the new format.

Well, lets hope that this scenario doesn't get played out like what happened in Milwaukee, where Clear Channel's WQBW beat Saga's WJZX to the punch with a Top 40 format. So be forwarned South Florida.

WMIA, it's been reported, is currently in the top 5 in Miami in 25-54 and has averaged well inside the top 10 for 2010. Is there another reason why this format and station are suddenly being discussed as flip candidates?

With the new census figures coming out it also won't be out of the real of possibilities if 93.9 ends up with a Spanish-language format.

Clear already has representation in the two viable format possibilities... a third would only provide more fragmentation in an already very congested Hispanic Spanish language market.

Or with 93.1 ditching Rock, perhaps 93.9 will go with an Hispanic-friendly Modern Rock station similar to 98.7 FM in L.A.

Again, this makes the assumption that 4th or 5th in 25-54 is something that makes Clear unhappy. And the fact that Mexican heritage Hispanics do listen to KYSR does not instantly translate into a conclusion that Caribbean origin Hispanics would do the same thing.

I concur that the "party" mentions may be a smoke screen for the real change.

Hopefully Cox does it right and doesn't use the same stunting strategy that the idiots at Saga/Milwaukee did.

well with the jingles that WMIA are playing now it sounds like it will go soft ac or gold base ac like kool 105.5

My predictions:
93.9 will slightly alter their format. I think CC just wanted to jump on the Christmas bandwagon and get a nice POP in some ratings. The only logical choice was WMIA. Dont expect much of a change on Dec 26th.

93.1 is a different story. I'm betting on Talk. FM talk is getting hotter now. They have FM news/talk stations in Jacksonville, Dayton and Atlanta now. (They are simulcasting their big AMs.) But Miami could be ready for it. There is only one English language talk station and it is, at best, doing fair in the ratings. But talk is big in other markets. Cox might just take a stab at it.

I second Flapjack's talk radio prediction for 93.1 FM. Certainly, all of those liners teasing "a new party" would have to refer to the Republican variety...

I havent heard those liners yet. (Not really doing the Christmas music thing quite yet. lol)

Well, there are many many other non-Premiere shows out there. The only major ones that the new station could not have would be Beck, Rush & Hannity. Everything else is totally open. I bet Cox would put Boortz on it. Probably Clark Howard, too.

You can get some ideas on Talkers Magazine. http://talkers.com/online/?p=3774

WFTL is not a factor at all in this. I'm sure any syndicator would dump them in a minute to go on an FM 100kw in Miami.

I could see lou dobbs and or alex jones going on another right wing talker

Is there any hope at getting som kind of active rock back on the air? I would think if this market can support 14 sports talk stations it could support one rock station that didn't push its fanbase away as 93 and zeta did

And how would Cox Radio do a simulcast in the Miami market??? Cox Radio no longer has an AM station in Miami, since it sold 610 WIOD to Clear Channel back in the early 90's. There are three formats that Cox may do. #1. Rhythmic CHR to go up against Power 96 and 99 Jamz, #2. Dance, #3. Mainstream Rock. Just my two cents.

93.9 most likely will be tweaked to create a Rhythmic AC/Hot AC hybrid format, after Dec 26th.

There has been past discussion on this board about a Miami-Dade FM flipping to talk in the near future, and I believe talk or news-talk is a very real possibility for WHDR. Cox Radio, as mentioned, already has news-talk AM-FM simulcasts in Jacksonville and most recently - Atlanta. Miami is prime for an FM talker, so this may be the real deal forthcoming. Cox already has top rated syndicated Neil Boortz and Clark Howard, so if talk is the direction Cox takes with 93.1, expect to hear these two great talents on the new 93.1 FM.

I'm in 100% agreement. 93.1 will go FM Talk.
It will be interesting to see if they will add a live, local morning show. Hire a few local news people and be more "traditional" like WSB and WOKV, or just run all syndicated and network newscasts.

I would like to see Cox take 93.1 news-talk with a local/live morning show, complete with full news, traffic and sports coverage during AM drive along with news capsules every hour throughout the day. Afternoon drive should also be local/live, with Boortz middays and Clark Howard mid afternoon. The rest of the evening and overnight is fine for nationally syndiated programs in the beginning until the ratings and ad revenues are there to support hiring someone for a local/live evening call-in program. I'd also like to see the station add a national news network such as CBS Radio or Fox News.

Miami is not an extremist right/Tea Party kind of town so an FM Talker with the likes of Hannity and Limbaugh will likely remain up in limbow.

Miami is one of the very, very few markets in which liberal talk radio has succeeded. Neil is the primary example of that. Would Cox dare try a local liberal or two?

Cox would not be able to secure Limbaugh and Hannity, anyway, due to the fact both are already on Clear Channel's WIOD. As for Cox's syndicated Boortz and Howard, Boortz is a Libertarian and not an extreme right winged "Tea Party" supporter, while Howard is not political at all as his show revolves around financial matters. A local/live morning and afternoon drive talk program will set the stage, provided it caters to Miami and South Florida.
