Predictions For 93.1 and 93.9

Personally I'd like to see a WDUV- or even (gasp) a WAVV-style format here, but I'm not betting the mortgage on it.

WDUV is 15th in an average of the June-August PPMs, and is aobut 14th in billings in the market. Still, a good use for a less than full signal, which is not the case in Miami. And the Miami MSA is half Hispanic, which would possibly limit even more the potential for a station like WDUV.

I guess the best way to explain the modern approach 93.1 would take, would be Nikki Sixx and his syndicated show, Sixx Sense. Yes, I know that's a Clear Channel program and we're talking about Cox here...but I use Nikki's program as an example of what style of talkers and shows they'd place on the air. Again, edgy, modern, current.

I certainly don't think the Love Doctors or Paul and Young Ron would go to 93.1. But when you listen to those two shows, in comparision to say, WFTL's new morning show, or Joyce afternoon show.....its clear to see the the Love Docs and Paul are more "current" sounding.

I could see 93.1 bringing in talent to cultivate a locally oriented talk program. But not recycling Jorge Rodriquez or Steve Kane, whose even more outdated than Joyce.

I've noticed that there's been a lot more activity on the Facebook of Party 93.1 HD-2 lately...

I guess everyone is right then, 93.1 is going back to dance format.

Wow...its depressing. Don't we have enough of that whole hispanic/hip hop/ethnic stuff on the South Florida dial already? Boring.

Makes me think back to the day when you had, what, six rock stations in the Palm Beach/Miami area: 97.3 GTR, 94.9 Zeta, 103.5 SHE, 98.7 Gater, 92.7 ZZR and Big 106. And for Miami/Fort Lauderdale, just one.

This is the SAME thing...history repeats all over again, only now, instead of rock, its hispanic. Some of these stations eventally have to fail, its inevitable. There's too many of them.

Wow, you're confused. What does that whole hispanic/hip hop/ethnic stuff have to do with dance music in general? There are many who do not fit into your statement who are dance music fans.

When exactly was this?? I remember 97.3 GTR going head to head with 103 She in the late 80s while Zeta was Classic Rock. 98.7 was never a factor in Miami radio - it was always a Palm Beach Rock station. At the time 92.7 was a CHR known as Z-93, serving Fort Pierce, and part of the Palm Beaches. Big 106 was A/C outlet Waxy 105.

Flash forward to 2010/2011 and of course the radio landscape looks different. The Hispanic population may be bigger, but it's not as heavily dominated by the Cuban community as it used to be. Additionally, there are other groups that have gotten bigger with time in South Florida - Israelis, Russians, Haitians/Islanders, etc.

There's a number of factors as to why 93.1's Rock format scored an embarrassing 1.5 share, and it's not just because of the whole "Hispanic/Hip Hop" thing as you so eloquently put it. The audience makeup of the market, Rock's decreasing popularity with the general population, alternative forms of media such as the internet, and more.

JayR, I couldn't agree more. When Party 931 was in format, it revolved around Top 40/Mainstream and Club Dance music. In fact, it did not contain rap, r&b, hip hop. I don't know where this guy is getting his info from.

Since when were the Bee Gee's (70's), Donna Summer (80's), Real McCoy (90's), and groups of today singing "Like a G6" and "Stereo Love" have anything to do with hispanic/hip hop/ethnic. LOL

FYI - This is Miami, not Topeka, Oklahoma City, or Billings Montana. The market is what it is!!!

Well, half the market is Hispanic, and 20% is African American, so wouldn't you expect that the group Arbitron calls "Other" (Non-Hispanic white) would be less appealing as a station target?

In any case, Hispanics have no "music gene" and like all other people are a product of nurture, not nature in this respect. All kinds of formats appeal to all kinds of Hispanic lifestyles and demos. Of course, Miami has always had a preference for rhythmic material going back to the mid-70's Y-100 programming, so there is more exposure than in many places.

If you are referring to the Bee Gees disco /Saturday Night Fever stuff, those songs and all the Donna Summer disco stuff on Casablanca were all in the 70's.
