President's College Sports Roundtable

The president held a white house meeting Friday to discuss college sports. He proposed an executive order that he expects will be controversial:

Among the changes, he wants to get rid of "Name Image Likeness" rules in the NCAA.

He also brought up the various TV rights deals that exist currently.

Among the key proposals in play over the last several months was one that would rewrite the existing Sports Broadcasting Act to allow college conferences to pool their TV rights.

Makes me wonder whatever happened to the political party that believed in less government?

There will be an absolute tsunami of lawsuits should any attempt be made to rescind the new NIL rules.

There are a lot of corporate suit types who are mad they now have to share money with the actual athletes.

He sure has a habit of turning gold into dust. You know, like The Hollies in 1967 sang:

"He's King Midas with a curse.
He's King Midas in reverse."

He's probably doing this to turn people's attentions away from the war with Iran he started. Unfortunately (as in so many other cases), his blatant racism is showing--the NIL rules especially help minority athletes.

Keep in mind that perhaps the most powerful conference is the SEC, and almost all of the colleges are owned by red states. They believe in states rights, freedom, and liberty. They don’t tend to be open to federal control.

Since when do the red states stand up to this administration? Almost all the lawsuits filed against the federal government in the past year have been filed or joined by D state Attorney Generals or D state Governors.

That's why I mention it. In the south, college sports is bigger than politics. It's a religion. The president may live in Florida, but in his head, he's still a New Yorker, and college sports isn't as big there. So he really doesn't know what he's messing with. He may get support from old timers who remember how it used to be. Nick Saban might be one of them. But the people in charge like the big money college sports attracts.

No kidding. Ever dealt with the “Faith, Family and Football” crowd? It’s like encountering a religious cult. Thou shalt worship football and the ground the players walk (or play) on.

That’s not bashing football; I enjoy the NFL and to a certain degree, college football. But to me it’s just fun entertainment, not a complete lifestyle.

My parents grew up in upstate NY in the 1940s. They tell me that high school football there barely got any attention, with games played in the afternoon without no lights, no cheerleaders, no bands, no drill or dance teams, in front of a handful of people sitting on small wooden stands. Barely above intramural sports.

When they moved to Texas as adults they could not begin to relate to how big football was in the state.

In professional sports the coach is in charge of players who are usually making many times what the coach does, which is a weird dynamic, as in most of the business world the “boss” has the highest salary. There may be a lot of college coaches who resent having to deal with players who might be raking in millions of dollars.
But the people in charge like the big money college sports attracts.
As I said elsewhere, many colleges are essentially operating pro football teams as an ancillary business.

The SEC is begging for the current NIL rules to be modified or abolished (preferably the latter). Why? Because they can go back to paying their players under the table, while the other major FBS conferences will have to go back to just scholarship-athletes. The Correct Social Order of College Football will return, with ESPN's blessing.

They are gone with the wind, if they ever truly existed.
Donde Plowan, chancellor of the University of Tennessee was in attendance

NIL is here to stay can't put the paste back into the tube plus the Supreme Court would like to have a say and said players should get paid.

I think college sports is bigger than maga in some states.
You’re talking here about a group that was all-in on “no new wars,” “lower gas prices” and “release the you-know-who files” roughly 24 months ago. History—very very recent history—shows that whatever verbal diarrhea emanates from the simpleton in chief is truth. Higher has prices are good. War is good. The crimes in the files aren’t an issue, unless involving someone with a “D” label—then they matter.

There is scant evidence that any principle supersedes whatever the clown says MAGA means today. And if that means they contort themselves into a pretzel with the logic of how the clod is right, as always, so be it.

If anyone from the other party made anything close to the nonsensical statements he did, then yes, football supremacy would matter. This is not what we’re dealing with.

The news really didn't get out, but when Sinclair and Nexstar "suddenly decided" to reinstate Jimmy Kimmel's show at 5pm on a Friday afternoon, coincidentally before a big SEC football weekend? It wasn't coincidental. ABC promised to pull the plug on the SEC games for ABC affiliates of those two companies. You do NOT leave a blank screen in place of SEC football without a visit from the mob, most likely.
