President's College Sports Roundtable

The news really didn't get out, but when Sinclair and Nexstar "suddenly decided" to reinstate Jimmy Kimmel's show at 5pm on a Friday afternoon, coincidentally before a big SEC football weekend? It wasn't coincidental. ABC promised to pull the plug on the SEC games for ABC affiliates of those two companies. You do NOT leave a blank screen in place of SEC football without a visit from the mob, most likely.
but would the conferences like being blacked out over a dispute about a late night show?

As a result of this meeting, the president has put out an EO attempting to turn the clock back in college sports:

He is using the threat of federal grants to colleges to enforce his order. The fact is the president doesn't control those grants. They are made by congress. It sounds like the NCAA would rather deal with congress on this issue, not the president.

Because it's an EO, the NCAA, will probably take it to court. This will be especially true if the President tries to act on it.

The part of it that's insidious is he's using federal funds, which are NOT for sports, to enforce an order for sports. The president doesn't control that funding. Congress does. These sports programs are not funded by federal money. It's a form of extortion.

If you read the article I linked, it quotes the NCAA as saying they're going to congress.

"We need congressional action to sort of seal the deal on a number of these things, which is good because we do, and getting a bipartisan agreement on a number of those issues would be a really big thing," Baker said. "Based on my own conversations with a lot of Democrats and Republicans in Washington over the course of the past month or two, I do think there's a lot of common ground there."
