Production using Vista

Like many guys here, I use Adobe Audition 2.0 (will upgrade to 3.0 soon). Soon I'll be replacing my "long-in-the-tooth" 3ghz P4HT system with something new, shiny, and multi-core.

What I'm wondering if anyone here could share their experience(s) producing with Vista. I sometimes grab snippets of audio off the web (all public domain, OF COURSE!), and am concerned about the recording restrictions (the lack of "Stereo Mix" as a recording option on most Vista systems I've tinkered with in stores. Like most "production wizards" (I suspect), I suddenly get an idea of a snippet of audio I'd like to incorporate, and go grab it. Microsoft says that things like record options are up to the sound card manufacturers, and those who write their drivers. Fair enough. If you have these options in your Vista system, what soundcard are you using?

Also, how does Adobe Audition run in Vista? Are there programs you just can't get to run correctly?

Why don't you play it safe and get a Dell with Windows XP? Your old hardware and software will run fine in it. With a couple of gigs of memory and a 250 GB hard drive it will be a screamer...

Vista may have some of the bugs out of it now, but last February, when I purchased a Vista computer, I finally had to give up and return it. Some of my older software wouldn't run with it, including some Microsoft programs (MS Front Page and Publisher). At the time, Microsoft had no patches to make their own programs run properly in their own operating system. Hopefully that has changed. I also had trouble getting my combination printer, scanner and copy machine to do all its functions properly. It would print but I never could get it to scan in Vista. I never got as far as putting a third party sound card in it, but the one that was included lost the left channel on the rear jacks after a couple of weeks.

Of course, there is always a Mac which now will run Windows programs. For that matter Linux is looking better and better…..

In the studios using Audition we just added three new Dell computers each one equipped with 2GB of RAM and 260GB HD's (we save ALL audio to external HDs..they're so cheap, we lock them down at the end of a year and install a new one)

I too didn't want to mess with Vista as many sound cards don't have vista drivers..and a few external drives won't work in it..ALSO I found that a LOT of plug-ins..and I mean a LOT of them don't have versions for vista..so...

we got THREE new VOSTRO dual core XP systems WITH 19in LCD widescreens for under 1850.00 for ALL of them. The LOVE Audition 3.0 and we have had no issues at all installing anything.

We have some custom configured MAC G4s still for the ProTools work, and yeah they are a few years old but ya can't beat em..but for PC oriented stuff I am keeping vista in the rear view mirror.

As far as I know, if you get a machine with a vista business or pro license...you can downgrade to XP using any key.

What I'm saying is, it might not be a bad idea to have future upgradability to Vista...but for now: don't even bother fiddling with Vista if your goal is to produce audio on a PC with the vast majority of yesterday's, or even, today's software.
