Programming changes at KTVK!

The tease used to be an effective tool for keeping the viewer tuned in, but with the internet, I usually know what story they are talking about and realize that I can turn off the TV after the one minute blurb of local news ends.

I guess the only real reason I might watch the news is for an investigative piece that I find interesting. Otherwise, I have already read about it on the internet, or heard about it on KFYI or KTAR.

Also, people like to talk about the news, which is best done via the internet and/or talk radio. McAzcentral.com and Eastvalleytribune.com all allow comments on the news stories, or on one of the talk stations.
 
Landtuna.... You nailed CH 3 right on the head... Overly cheerful, bordering on puking personalities... i.e. Tara Hitchcock... and anchorwomen who at times cannot read... i.e., Patty Kirkpatrick... I do have to say she does break the mold of hiring super sexy women for TV news... There are better, more precise newscasts on CH 5, and Ch 12... even then the news here on TV is not what a top 15 Market should be... It's not even what a top 50 Market should be... CNN, FOX, CNBC are where most folks get their news anyway... Very Disappointing. :-\

Good points! Phoenix definitely does not have the quality of a top 15 market. Seatte/Tacoma, a similar-sized market, has much higher quality newscasts. And the Belo station there just extended their am news to 4:30am -- but I must add that it is a serious newscast -- not the lite-sized GMAZ. Has anyone noticed that Scott Passmore is not a great newsreader -- but easy on the eyes for the ladies?
 
It's been about 2 months since KTVK made their big programming changes. Please include your assessments.

GMAZ starting at 4:30 has been okay. Hits the big news stories, weather and expanded business news. The business segment is erratic because sometimes they have it during the 5:00-6:00 period and other times either Pasmore or Fierro read business. I think someone talked to (business expert) Janet Perez and told her to smile more because during the opening she seemed mad to be awake that early! Then again, I would be mad if I came in for that early for 10 minutes on content. Probably the letdown is that they launched this configuration during the summer when a lot of talent takes (well deserved) vacations so depending on the day/week several of the personalities weren't there. Also with the one/two day movie junkets you never know who would show up that morning.

While I haven't watched GDAZ and GEAZ to give a decent critique, I hope Frank Camacho is settling into the midday host role. It takes a special person to go from interviewing the Governor about illegal immigration to interviewing a hair stylist talking about the latest Tween look.

News at 9:00 is okay. I like the extended news stories. They have a steep mountain to climb to get near Fox10. Maybe adding a male anchor could help.
 
KTVK hasn't been on my TV guide for years now, for news or anything else.....but I have a question.

Are there really enough viewers up and watching TV at 4:40 AM to drive the need for a news program? If my working life was pretty common I hauled out of bed about 6:30, might have had the TV on for a few minutes while I washed down some toast with the first cup of coffee but then was out the door for my (fortunately) short commute to work (while I listened to music because there wasn't enough time to catch even a short news story).

No one else in my family, even those who were starting work earlier than me, ever watched TV in the morning.

Soccer moms can't be the only people getting up that early. What's the need?

I've long thought the local "news" programs were primarily designed to (a) fill the FCC requirement for local benefit, (b) give the station an opportunity to attract local advertising and (c) just fill time less expensively than with real programming. The stations that have introduced back-to-back evening newscasts and very early newscasts seem to be answering my assumptions.
