Project 9-6-1

With rock stations going bellyup daily (WRAX R.I.P) it was a pretty bold move by Clear Channel to throw away that history and bet it all on a 2 share. Looks like it's being run pretty thrifty, though. Is this the lifeline 99X needed?

anyone find it interesting that 99x has already started mentioning the competition? Not a really good marketing move from what I have seen in the past....turn on your people to a new station in town? But with a morning show like that...I am not sure that they even know what they are doing.

I guess they've "gotten the message"? ;)

Like nearly everyone else here I was skeptical about the changes, but for all the hand wringing that's been done about the switch, I'd have to see that the station is currently more listenable for me than it's been in a number of years.

This morning around 7:40 to 7:50 is a good example of why: AC/DC "Dirty Deeds" followed by Korn "Coming Undone". Two songs from 30 years apart but they worked, or at least they worked very well on this nearly 40 year old who grew up on 96 Rock just like a lot of other posters here. Worked great on the 8 y/o I was taking to school at the time too.

Of course, they had me pulling my hair out right after that ... as they kicked off a break with an NFL Network spot. Problem was that the spot was hyping the game played on Thanksgiving Day.

Truth is I doubt they'll ever be able to get me back as a P1 (too many currents that I don't like) but even having me as a P3 is far better than they've been able to for the past several years.

I don't think people are knocking the music on Project, it's the way they went about killing the brand that ticked people off. 96rock could've done this a few yrs back. The Regular Guys did well with the younger demo, so did Southside and Rhodes. They could've launched "Old is new again on 96rock!" They could've imaged the station to say, "We're doing what we do, playing the best rock out there." They could've even brought back the old orange and black logo...but they didn't. It would've been fun to listen too again, without blowing up a 30 yr old brand. Now the name is stupid, the imaging stinks, and the jocks are average. But hey....the music is pretty good.

Is Chris on Project's afternoon drive the same guy as the one on the Buzz? He sounds like he's trying to make his voice deeper, as to come across "harder"... it doesn't really make sense.

Count me in on those betting they'll start using the term '96Rock' again in the future. All they've done is adjusted the playlist but are still playing Rock. No brand died here, the programming change makes it more like the 96Rock of decades past. There will always be a 96Rock type format for all of eternity, it's not just the music of one particular generation, new stuff comes along all the time and it's still rock and should be heard on a rock station.

I agree 96Rock will return. I am not sure if it is part of the current plan but if it is not they next PD will probavbly resurrect it. No matter what they say P{roject seems like a very temporary brand. Let's face it the life cycle of a 96.1 PD is about 15 months.

if 96 rock was that valuable a brand they'd have never dumped it

ain't comin' back

sorry

I agree.... knowing Clear Channel, it wasn't like they had a warehouse full of 96rock merchandise. They probably just had a half a box of bumper stickers they had to throw away.
