Project 96.1

From All Access:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The End" Is Nigh At 96 Rock/Atlanta

Is This The Future Look For 96 Rock?
As first tipped on ALL ACCESS, the format changes are starting on CLEAR CHANNEL/ATLANTA, with Classic Rock WKLS (96 ROCK) telling listeners that it will change at 9a ET FRIDAY.

The station's website is defaulting to a page that sports "1974-2006" beneath the station's logo and a statement inviting listeners to "witness the end of 96 ROCK. And be part of a new beginning for 96.1 FM." Will the station launch a new "PROJECT" at that time? And will the format ultimately land on something more Active?

The station is running jockless with promos talking about how "we're not sure we've lived up to that name... 'rock'" lately and "all that changes" at 9a. (ALL ACCESS notes that PROJECT961.COM is password-protected site as of early FRIDAY but gives a message indicating that the server is "WKLS-FM.clearchannel.com Port 80")

Kicking the station off with some Metallica's Enter Sandman isn't that bad better than say Slipknot. Not sure about the name though. Project 9-6-1?

From the website....

"Welcome to Atlanta’s newest radio station, Project 9 – 6 - 1. Finally bands like Metallica, AC/DC, Pearl Jam, RHCP, Led Zeppelin, Sound Garden, Pink Floyd, Green Day, Ozzy, Nirvana, and Korn, are together for the first time on one Atlanta radio station"

This could be fun.

Didn't the Buzz launch with Metallica 18 months ago on 105.3?

The concept doesn't make much sense. It's 96 rock with the Buzz.
They could have kept the 96rock name.
Only time will really tell.
Next Questions:
Is there going to be a morning show?
Which jocks are coming back or lost their jobs?
What about 105.3?

the new web site says:

Welcome to Atlanta’s newest radio station, Project 9 – 6 - 1. Finally bands like Metallica, AC/DC, Pearl Jam, RHCP, Led Zeppelin, Sound Garden, Pink Floyd, Green Day, Ozzy, Nirvana, and Korn, are together for the first time on one Atlanta radio station.

funny, but i remember a station.... a station called 96rock! that played metallica, ac/dc, pearl jam, rhcp, led zeppelin, soundgarden, pink floyd, green day, ozzy, and nirvana! oh but that was the 90s, before the evil empire bought them. thank goddess they changed the name of the STATION to finally include korn!

Yes, The Buzz also launched with "Enter Sandman" at 105.3 back in May 05.
I'm glad they'll be playing Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, and Ozzy.

The Project 9 - 6 - 1 name is not too great. Out of all the names of course 96rock is the best sounding name, however I can understand them not wanting to use that is it is so heavily identified with classic rock. But I really don't understand why they wouldn't just keep the Buzz name? Listeners recognize the Buzz name here in Atlanta, why change it? Pretty much it seems they are just undoing lots of the work they've been doing over at 105.3.

It will be interesting to see what jocks are on this station. I wonder if any jock from 96rock will still be around? I hope they don't go like a month being jockless. They need to just move the Buzz crowd over and not lose everything from there.

I'm glad I'm not the only person to notice this. I looked at the "recently played" list on the site and it looks like a 96Rock playlist. I don't get it... ???

So is Jennifer Reed out after 3-4 months?

No, if you check the Staff list they still have her listed. Nick, Big Rig, Finn, etc. They're still there, but maybe relaxing on a short vacation?

The recently played is from the hour leading upto the change. Do you think once the "project" is over it could become 96Rock again with the new format? I am not sure we have heard the last of the 96Rock moniker in this market. I like what they state will be their mix of music. I also liked one of the promos at 9:00 that ragged on them for playing Elton John and Fleetwood Mac and being a rock station 29 out of the last 32 years.

I was listening to Jennifer Reed last night and she said how a Thrasher was going to be on the air with her later and I believe that is the last I heard from her. Soon after the promos started. I would think she would be gone but the hot sexy voice could work to pull in those young males.

You better check the new website because no staff is listed under the staff link.

According to an email that Chris sent out to Buzz listeners a few minutes ago, the jocks will return the Monday after Thanksgiving. It doesn't specify who, but it does say at the bottom of the email in his signature: "Chris, Afternoons 3 - 7, Project 9 - 6 - 1". So there's one of them. I think it will be the Buzz jocks and then maybe 1 - 3 from 96rock.

It also says in this email that they changed the name because keeping "The Buzz" name would be too predictible and they are all about being unpredictible.

Well I'm enjoying it so far. But it's only 9:30 am...

I did hear from a reliable source that some of the staff got canned yesterday. But don't which ones got the axe.

I'm gonna give it a shot. As long as they have a good balence of music, and it doesn't turn into an all skater/cookie monster rock station
like the buzz was.

How long before you hear a spot with Chris Williams:

"Hi, this is Chris Williams, Program Director for Project 961. We hear at the Project want to make this YOUR radio station. Tell us what YOU want from YOUR Project blah blah blah blah blah blah." More radio BS.

I like on their MySpace page... the age of Project is 23 yrs.

Greeeaaaat... guess I'm not in their target demo.
