"(2) anti-CCM / Christian rockists"

Question.
I take it CCM stands for Contemporary Christian Music, is that correct?
Would Christian Rock not fit in with that or is it given it's own label so to speak?
Would CCM then be the more AC side of Christian Music and Christian Rock be a more youth oriented with more of a CHR sound?
______________

Pretty much agree with that. I always wanted to ask one of these KJV-only guys what Bible people who speak Spanish (French, whatever language) are supposed to use. Or where did God say "OK..everybody who speaks English. We're going to write the Bible in English once, and I don't care how many times you change the language, you're going to read my word in 17th Century Elizabethan English!"

I think the other poster pretty much answered this - most Christian rock stations are not for profit and rely on their listeners for support. Therefore, it takes a pretty big metro area to support one - same as any other niche format. We have a really good one in Dallas that makes a go of it.

The thing is, with 30000 to 35000 listeners, I think it would be viable as a commercial station, if their frequency allowed commercials. There is a lot of perception that would have to be overcome first. Part of it is - AAAAAA canned format CCM makes money in BBBBB market so if we copy the formula we can make money in CCCCCC market. But we better not stray too far from what worked in BBBBBB or we might lose the money making formula. There is not a lot of creative thought, listener surveys, questioning long held assumptions - therefore the same stale CCM formula shows up all over the country. It may make money, but there is almost never a program director with the courage to fine tune it to local tastes. Why rock the boat - "if it doesn't work I'll be the one to blame" mentality. A somewhat more daring program director should have the attitude "there are a lot of kids and young professionals in my town, lets crank up the beat and forget the grannies". There is nothing unique in this lack of creativity to Christian radio - it goes for every secular format you can name. About as daring as they ever get is to change the name of "Jack" FM to "Bob" or something else. And the listeners are noticing the same 400 songs on the playlist of classic rock, the aging oldies, the generic country, and deserting radio for iPods. If you must be stuck with the same 500 songs all the time, it might as well be 500 you like instead of somebody else's choice.

Re: christian rock radio

>..christian ac radio is formatted to sell..not to listen to :)>>>>>>>>

Hmmm...actually Christian AC (and mainstream AC) is targeted to the broadest appeal, largest potential of listeners, and with the most narrow focus to accomplish the task. That means a lot of listeners are satisfied with the product - and they listen.

Let's look at Radio U in Columbus...they're targeted to a very narrow life group of people. They have a smaller potential of total listeners than AC and they're very narrowly focussed...but I'm not sure they accomplish the task successfully.

Radio U is MISSION driven (formatted to be listened to and not at attracting advertisers). The reality is that they probably have more online listeners than they do listening on the radio in Central Ohio.

I'm not knocking why they do what they do - again - they're mission driven and that's their decision.

But, I'm sad that they'll never reach their potential of having a lot of people listening to them (including teen guys). I've seen it time and time again - broaden your appeal and your total number of listeners increases AND your teen numbers sky rocket...that to me equals succes for a MISSION driven station...and funds it properly at the same time.

I like RadioU!

I listen often to the RadioU stream, and whenever I drive through Columbus, I make sure to tune it in...

If I lived in Columbus it would be the #1 preset on my car (that is, if I had one...)

I know, I know... I'm just one listener... I still think it is great, though.

What do you think RadioU can do better? Just curious. Yes their very Mission oriented, they want the young and young adults to know that there is a Jesus that loves them.. Personally I think their doing a very good job, they have a cutting edge sound that rivals the mainstream stations in town, but..

Just curious where you think they could use some improvement. Im interested in your thoughts.

Their jocks, production and imaging are excellent. Those of us in the industry and all of the artists think very highly of both radiou and tvu. Perception in the industry does not define success.

What defines success for radiou? How many call the helpline...Number of conversions...Successful fundrives...Sounding as good as mainstream radio in the minds of employees and loyal listeners...I guess someone from radiou who can answer that question would be helpful.

It's just been my experience that some Christian-based organizations tend to throw out available research and proven strategies. I just think that radiou has greater potential to have MORE people listening (in and out of their target) by broadening their appeal.

It would be really interesting to compare The River's 12-17 or 18-24 numbers with radiou's 12-17 or 18-24 numbers. I wonder who's really impacting more teens' lives? But, again...total number of teen listeners may NOT define success for radiou.

Please know my heart: ratings success is not for bragging rights - it's a way to see how many lives are being impacted.

I may be way off - it's just my opinion open for discussion.

Re: RadioU

I'll agree with you here, Todd.

When I lived in Columbus, I listened some to Rado U. I took a tour of the place and saw that they have (or had at the time) two staffers dedicated to ONLY imaging the network. That was more attention to imaging than the local CC cluster had.

Understandable, they do put a lot of focus on putting out a good product, if anything I think folks can learn from that. Christian radio does not have to be dull and boring, I know a lot of stations are doing a good job, but I think in Christian radio, broadcasters must go above and beyond what the mainstream folks are doing, after all, doesn't God deserve the best ? (not to get preachy)

I do not work for The U, so I don't know exactly what they base things on, but I do know that they do get thousands of calls to the HelpLine and they have seen thousands and thousands of lives changed (just this past year), They also have been doing the format for almost 10 years now, so I would say they have had some success, sure they are completely supported by listeners, and this past fundraiser they met their goal and beyond, so I would say they have a fairly decent listenership, Ive been told the avg gift from their listener is 25$ a month so I would suspect they have a great deal of support from listeners, I suspect you have to put RadioU in a different catagory than most Radio, Commercial radio success is defined by ratings, and sales etc, where as RadioU as a mission oriented station, their success, I would is think defined differently. From a listener stand point, I think their doing a good job, I am one of those that has been impacted by the ministry of WUFM Columbus... so I guess I am a living proof that their doing something right. Plus I love the fact they dont have 12 minutes of commericals an hour like the rock station in town! Makes it more enjoyable to listen too!

Now, could this format work commerically? I have no doubt that a highly well produced, imaged, and executed Christian Rock format would see some commerical success, look at the bands that have received mainstream success such as Switchfoot, POD, Relient K etc.

No harm in your opinions, thanks for sharing them.

They moved into a bigger faclity this past March. Let me tell you its amazing, and would make most radio folks drool... They are serious about doing what they do there and do it well, their imaging, and production and execution of their format is top notch! Most have a feeling that Christian radio is cheesy (at least the non saved non Church folks, they totally change that conception and put a product out that rivals Mainstream radio (without the lyrics and junk) Their imaging guy is top notch and really has a passion for what he does.

Abraham Lincoln said ..

Yes good old Abe stated this "Alcohol has many Defenders, but no Defense."

Our country is awash [no pun intended] with alcoholic problems, I for one do not want to help sell or encourage it [via radio especially Christian Stations]. May God direct Christians to take the stand [it only really matters if God is in it obviously] which they have searched out by a time of prayer on their knees [on my knees? woo-wo, now lets not get stupid, we all know that you only do that when you are in big trouble, and this is not such a big of a deal, except for the occasional death & destruction to some families that we may cause helping tank up some our fellow citizens to get loaded once in awhile]

Re: Abraham Lincoln said ..

Saying alchohol is evil in and of itself is like saying that guns are evil.

Both kill people.

But the person holding the bottle, the gun, or the pills are the ones to blame. Not the device themselves.

We remove our selves from blame and moral responsibility when we blame devices themselves. Oh how we love to blame objects and substances for the sin and dysfunction in our hearts.

It's easier that way. "The devil made me do it." "It was the alchohol talking"

Actually, it was sin at work in my life. It knocked...and I gave way.

Re: Abraham Lincoln said ..

Apparently the only "correct" stand is prohibition, as its all about rules. However, as some of the other posters said, you might have to eliminate every category of business but Christian bookstores if you want to purge your station of sin. Do you refuse the restaurant (like an Applebees) that happens to serve alcohol? Do you refuse the grocery store that stocks beer? (You'd eliominate Kroger, Meijer, and mosty supermarket chains. Anyone that sells DVD players? People can watch porn on them! Furniture stores? Someone can buy a bed and have unlicensed relations on it. Where does it end?
______________

It is clear that the wine made back in biblical time was real wine as in needing fresh wine skins, due to the fermenting process which causes gas bubbles to form causing expansion and having an old stretched out wine skin would burst whereas the new wine skin would have the ability to stretch as the expansion occurred.

In 1st Corinthians 11:21-22 Paul is reaming out the Corinthians for getting drunk at the Agape feast (the pot luck supper they had before having Holy Communion). You can not get drunk from Welshade, the "runs" maybe so they were drinking real fermented wine.

Paul also does say in 1 Corinthians 10:23-32 that everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial - not everything is constructive. Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others. It goes on to discuss doing something that could cause your brother to stumble, etc. Verse 31-32 says So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Do not cause anyone to stumble. This becomes an issue each believer needs to pray about. It isn't a sin to have a glass of wine or a glass of beer (history does record that the Puritans brought more beer on their ships than water). I'm not telling anyone to go out and drink, again each believer needs to pray about this. It may be that you can enjoy a glass of beer or wine at home and not have the issue of being seen by someone and causing them to stumble.

I doubt that the History channel did anything on Noah's flood - as there is no objective scientific evidence to prove that the story of Noah ever took place. Other than what the creation so-called "scientists" put out.
