The Winter Arbitron SWAG book will be out soon. Anybody want to go out on a limb and make a few bold predictions? Any shills want to put out their optimistic company line? Either way should be interesting.

Ok, I will start: Horne Radio will push closer to the top 5 with True Oldies.

/they say you can't smell your own, btw.

I further predict that after the ratings are released, WOKI will rename itself 'Frog/Talk 98.7'.

And, in a move back to its roots, WNOX will call itself '99WNOX plus 1.3'. It will attract a more upscale audience of listeners who can do simple math in their heads.

By summer, market domination will be determined by no-holds-barred, no time limit cage match. First up, Johnny "The East-Tennessee Mountain Man" Pirkle vs. Farid "What is a Knoxville?" Suleman. Possible last minute substitution by Irving "The Cumulus Number Cruncherrrrr" Rothsteeeeeeen!

The Cumulus guy's wrasslin' get-up is impressive. It will make him look like a faceless empty suit. As long as Citadel doesn't consider it some kind of image infringement.

The warm-up match will be between Chris 'Womp ya with a rolled up newspaper' Protzmunnnnnn vs. JP 'The Stompin' Grandson' Ennnnneglbreeeeecht! Your ringside announcer will carry a small towel in the event he needs to wipe up any of his phlegm.

Not directly related to this new survey, but a prediction nonetheless: Whoever winds up in the big chair on Old Kingston Pike won't have the luxury of pretending to be a class act.

I say it could be a no contest. "Mountain Man Pirkle" could wipe the floor with them all if he so desired. That's My Prediction.

My prediction: 60% of the population will not be accounted for.

85% of the stations surveyed will lack someone actually riding herd over the on-air staff.

1 station will continue to allow mindless chatter about coffee and coupon clipping in morning drive, while back announcing yet another hit from a failed Disney princess and giving the wrong song title.

That last line, song back sell excepted, could apply to more than one morning show in this town.

Which is why we need a new format in this town. Something with back beat and rhythm, actual clocks, an air staff with some talent (not much, just some), and maybe, just maybe the desire to be on the air somewhere other than Knoxville.

I'd like to use Knoxville as a stepping stone to Morristown. Prolly not what you mean, though...

boogiecheck,

No Rhythmic CHR or Urban is viable in Knoxville. Knoxville market advertisers and mainstream media buyers won't buy, there's not enough format centric local advertisers to keep it viable. Simple business. Afro-American radio in K-town faded when WBMK and WKGN left that train. This is a market area which is conservative. Unless some non-com takes up the format. No revenue, no format. In Chattanooga, an Urban station can stay alive and viable and make money. The area has enough afro centric businesses who buy ad time and mainstream media buyers will also buy time in crossover deals. A rhythmic might even do fine in that market.

Prediction: WIVK will not be putting out another book of lies this year.

AM 1580 is still cranking out programming for the African American demo. Mainly religious programming
