PULSE 87 Coming to Chicago and LA!

I checked 87.7 here out of Orlando and it has a strong signal. I can pick it up at my house CLEARLY. I live on the Southeast side of town near the airport. I also went around I-Drive one of the tourists areas, downtown and it comes in clearly without any interference.

We haven't had any dance since 95.3 went Hip Hop. Orlando is a great market for the young edgy crowd. We have the attraction parks,UCF and other nearby colleges. And we still have an underground dance scene mostly breaks.

Mega Media should look into Orlando if it has not done so yet.

The 87.7 you're hearing in Orlando is the sound of full-power station WKMG-TV. It's *possible* Mega could buy/LMA WKMG-TV but the chances they're willing to pay what the TV station would demand are zero.

Besides, as WKMG is a full-power station, it's required to silence its analog signal by June. (the NYC/Chicago/LA stations have low-power licenses, for which an analog drop-dead date hasn't been set yet)

Thanks for clarifying the differences with the licenses. So much for my idea lol.

The expansion of Pulse is definitely a fascinating development. The discussion here has covered a number of aspects of the plan.

Basically what's being done is a network and a Pulse net will be easy enough to run. I don't believe that the "local" issues raised in this thread are, in fact, issues.

Because the advantage of a consistent brand and frequency across all of the markets is reduced operating costs, Mega is likely to feed all stations with the New York head end. The feed can be 100% to all stations or it can be set up to allow localized stop sets. Unless Mega plans to air city-specific ads across all of the stations and not do local inserts, then all ads will likely be for national sponsors or else spots will include products and services that a local advertiser can make appeal universally. I'm not sure how something as local as a New York club spot can be massaged to play well across the net though. However, working in a line at a proper place in the copy like, "wherever you are, when you're in Queens, Central Bar is where the party's at," could conceivably cover. If spots can't be universal, an upside is that such spots make the station(s) sound bigger - as long as the station policy is to routinely talk about all of the cities. In the final analysis, no listeners are going to turn off the station due to spots that aren't directed to them; on this point it's really an issue of if Mega wants to avoid airing spots in a city where the flight is worthless. It sounds odd to the audience and it's wasted inventory. Further, it's a sales consideration wrt pricing and if a client even wants a spot heard across the network. It will be interesting to see how Mega manages this.

I've covered options for a 100% feed of programming/spots and 100% programming with localized spots but the net could have a completely local daypart or more, which of course would make localizing easy during those windows.

Contests, as a matter of policy, can be national. If a contest is city-specific, it can be creatively executed despite being aired net-wide.

Time zones and weather: simple to deal with. Time and wx isn't given that frequently and when it is, Pulse can just work in all three of the relevant times and/or weather, bang bang bang...not a big deal, this isn't Russia with 11 time zones. Conversely, time and weather could be eliminated.

As one who's been involved in programming and management of three national dance broadcast services over the past 11 years, I assure you that operating in a national space is not difficult, especially with a lifestyle format like dance music. Time, weather and contests were never problematic in my experience; in fact, being national reinforced the largeness and it was used to advantage.

BTW, theedger makes some good points in earlier comments.

In closing, a point of fact about the Energy stations in Chicago (RIP), Phoenix (RIP) and San Francisco: while they all used/use the "Energy" branding, all were independent of one another in every way and shared only the name in common with the exception of, in the cases of Chicago and Phoenix, the logo and the imaging voice of Harry Legg. (Mikeo can correct me if I'm wrong wrt Energy Arizona.) All three happened to use 92.7 too, but that's mere coincidence.

Hi Alan,

Yes, Harry was the Voice of Energy Arizona when I was there. He continues to be the voice of Energy 98!

Hi Alan,, and Mr Oaks as well.... Speaken of Harry Leg,,, he used to voice or Pirate fm and limited 10 Capacity Net stream for Energy 101.1 (Not Affiliated with any other Energys)... Howerver... CHR POP Radio Now WNOU 100.9 moved into Indianapolis right before me,, my ex Cassie, and her new Boyfriend,,, We all ran energy 101.1,,, so after the break up and the move in of WNOU at 100.9,,, we all went our different ways.. but now I am on air at Formerly 93.7,,, but last week moved to 93.5 as to not interfere with anyone and get the signal out farther... So the Formrt Energy 101.1 in indiana is now two seperate RIVAl stations... Mine is 93.5 Mystery FM with 250 watts.... and Chris and Cassie,, My arch Enemies whom I wish would die...Seriously are running 88.5 Rhythm FM,, but they have 1/5 of my power, and air unedited Gangsta Rap around the few dance they play.... I have Mitch Craig for Liners, and they were using Mark Driscol, but now use their own home made sweepers... My Enemie's at 88.5 Rhythm fm only have 50 watts,,, and dont use a compresser/Limiter and cause alot of Noise in the Dial with about a 10-15 mile radious... I have clean audio,,, Filtered from causing Interference to Emergency Services or Airplanes,, and I dont drift off frequency or try to sell Drugs and guns on air.

something about drugs and airplanes covering a 10-15 mi. radius meanwhile the poster is hanging with his ex and her new man, gang bangs, getting tested for clean audio? idk.

Come to Newark, NJ and run your pirate station there, and you won't get shut down for a decade. Or run that pirate station in Boston and you'll get one dedicated listener who only listens to pirate stations.
Energy 98 started out as a pirate station (hence the 98)

Anyway, this thread was about Pulse 87 cloning itself, not about a group of pirate stations in Indiana.

energy 98 hands down is the best online station! it's almost as if they read my mind and know what i want to hear. i haven't talked to Mikeo in forever, I'm glad he's still around. I wonder if he even remembers me lol.

I love Pulse 87, but.... Pulse could learn a thing or two from energy 98's wide selection of music.

So how soon is this Pulse thing happening? And will it ever become even more widespread than that in the near future? It would be neat if we could get a nationwide radio company (like ClearChannel, CBS,..) who was also dedicated to dance hits.
