Q102 circa 1975

First, the Q102 logo is misplaced, because this aircheck sounds like it was recorded before the arrival of Randy Michaels in 1975 - the Q102 moniker came just after that (along with Bo Woods complaint about us "rounding up" the frequency.) Isn't that Chris O'Brien's voice on the imaging? Wonder if there are any more like that on here..

Ed Prijatel was the PD before Randy. Chris, Fox and Pat were all there before Randy came in March of '75. Sebastian started about the same time as Randy. Bruce Ryan was the morning guy and Dan Lundy was the music director. The rainbow logo didn't happen until about 1980.

Didn't they fire Prij/Ted to bring Randy in from Buffalo? I know Fox and Pat were already there - great story about Jim bringing in his own records 'cause he didn't like what Prijatel had him playing.

Q102 was federally trademarked in Sept 1976 by Taft Broadcasting AND NEVER ENFORCED!
(Philadelphia and Dallas are two markets I know of where it's being used, and I think Philly actually tried to claim the TM as well.)

I've got the long form Q102 composite in an MP3 file somewhere I have to find it before this weekend..
Bruce Ryan Mornings
Jim Fox 9 - 12
Randy 12 - 3
Pat 3 - 7
Sebastian 7 - 12
Mark Elliott 12 - 5 or 6, depending on when Bruce showed up.

Q102 did manage to stop the current T102 in Lima from being "Q102", which they had switched to briefly when they went with live country

Mark, If you find it will you post it somewhere?

I thought Jerry Thomas hired Randy from Buffalo? It's funny, I only remember Prij on KRC and SAI.

Ed/Ted was PD of KRQ between Bill Todd and Randy Michaels, circa 1976. He later helped heap revenge on them by being on staff at WSAI in 77-78, when 'SAI became the only large market AM station to beat back an FM competitor and regain a ratings lead in a head-to-head Top 40 battle.

A citation of your claim would be needed especially since WSAI switched to Country in August 1978.

Q102 was one helluva station. I've was a devout listener back in the day. There are airchecks out there. If you search this board you might find a thread and a link from a few months back that will take you to an FTP site where some Cincy airchecks were posted. The link might be inactive today.

If you are a subscriber to www.reelradio.com you can find two "Q" airchecks in my corner of Uncle Ricky's Repository, gosh I really need to update my profile. Just search "Q102" and there you go. Both airchecks are from 1983. You will also find the last evening of WSAI as a Top 40 station (8/21/78) in my exhibit.

One of the final nails in 'SAI's Top 40 coffin was refusing to play "Only the Good Die Young" in 1975. They never came back and were scared into going country when Randy returned from Kansas Cirty in 1978. Randy had 55KRC join some country boards and SAI panicked adn switched.

Taft never enforced the Q102 logo because their lawyers told them it was not defendable; that they'd have to prove damages and a station in Dallas using that name would not harm a station in Cincinnati. That's how they got the Lima staation to back off - signal overlap.

How ironic, considering the way Q-102 acted about George Michael's "I Want Your Sex" in 1987. (Incidentally, Q-102 did later play the George Michael song when it was noncurrent. But while it was popular they refused to play it and edited it out of 'American Top 40'.)

(Also, I was thinking the Billy Joel song was later than 1975, maybe around 1977 or 1978.)

Seems unfair to me that a radio station in Texas could, at least in theory, use a Brand established by another station, albeit in another state. To me it's like a Potato Chip Company in Texas using the name Grippo's or Mike Sell.

With regard to air checks it sure would be great to have an air check on Buddy Baron's last day on Price Hill. He was playing "stuff you never hear on the radio" and I suspect he might have caused the transmitter to bleed because he was smokin' hot that night. It was aurally exciting (sorry couldn't resist the pun no matter how bad).

101.7 in down the road in Richmond, KY started call themselves "Q102" in 1985. Their logo was a similar typeset but the "Q" was normal.

I'm guessing "Only the Good Die Young" was banned for the usual reasons, we don't want to corrupt those young Catholic girls. They are very impressionable.

Ted McAllister last day made an impression. Over the intro of Evelyn Campaign King he said, "It's not a shame, it's a god****ed disgrace!" Pretty stout for 1978 Top 40 radio. The aircheck is out there on the tubes of the interwebs.

That's right, the trademark was "unenforceable". Taft had a LOT of lawyers (and travel agents) to deal with.

Later in life, I found out - the hard way - that those types of trademarks and protections ARE enforceable, just expensive. But that's another story.

You may have your coffin nail right, but the year has to be wrong. Billy Joel's "The Stranger" didn't come out until 1977. I remember hearing the Q jocks celebrating SAI's country demise on air.

I collect radio station bumper/static stickers and had one of the old Q102 "rainbow" stickers on my car and the comments I got after the gay community "adopted" the rainbow flag as their symbol, just irritated me that people could be so bigoted and narrow minded [tried to peel the sticker off to save it after the car crapped out and I junked it, but alas, it was not able to be saved].......but also glad their call letters wern't WGAY.

Re WSAI over Q102: I believe it was Fall '77. I was out of the market by this time so I don't have a copy of the report. R&R interviewed E. Alvin Davis about it if I recall correctly... 9.8-7.9 12+.
