Q102- EXCESSIVE Repetition?

B

Guest
So I don't listen to Q102, and looking at their recent playlist, I don't know if I would... as their top songs have gotten EXTREMELY excessive spins. They usually land around 100-110 spins per week, but for some reason this week, their top 3 songs are up to 144-148 spins per week.

I know in CHR it's all about slamming the hits, but averaging it out to once every hour-ish? It seems a bit over the top. Are they doing anything special to cause the bump in spins? Or is this a programming move?

It's music decisions being run by corporate America, not by people whi actually care about or listen to music.
Clear Channel is the George W Bush of radio.

q102 IS A POOR EXCUSE FOR A RADIO STATION! IT SOUNDS TERRIBLE! IT'S NOT LOCAL! IT'S TRUE , IT'S RUN BY CORPORATE WHIMS!

BRING BACK SOMETING LIKE THE OLD MULRITES' EAGLE 106!

Rihanna's Don't Stop The Music at 165 times a week?!

It looks like their top 3 songs are on about 45 minute rotations.

What's the reasoning for this? I really can't think of a single one that would make them crank out the same song every 45 minutes.

2 words. Cheap Channel. They have destroyed radio.
Have they tried the "less is more" approach in Philly? Here in Hartford, this makes Kiss 95.7 sound like it's being broadcast by a 20-something living (and broadcasting out of) his parents' basement.

I don't know about the less is more stuff. But no other station is cranking out songs more than around 115-120 a week. And Q102 just really pumped their spin totals this week, which made me wonder why.

I used to live in PHilly and I was on the mediabase website a couple of weeks ago and they said that Q102 played the song by Sara Barellis 161 times when it was number one.

161 spins in 168 hours? I don't think Mike Joseph who created the HOt Hits format (OLD WCAU 81-87) called for that many spins in a week. If memory serves me correct, the top 5 songs were turned over every 75 minutes which adds up to approxamitely 19 spins a day or 133 spins a week.

For comparison, In Lancaster county PA where I now live, WLAN which is a clear channel top 40 channel spins the top songs about 90 times a week or about every 105 minutes

The young generation mostly listens to iPods which don't repeat songs unless the person hits rewind. Some still have FM radios in cars. They expect to hear a hit song every time they jump in the car, and are too lazy to hook up the iPod to the car radio for short drives. They also push the preset buttons when they hear a commercial or a song they don't like until they hear a song they like. Because TSL is going down, spins of the powers are going up. Because radio is too repetitive, people listen for less time, therefore the stations overcompensate by increasing power spins. That's why people say that q102 plays the same 10 songs over and over all day.

Nick, that's an interesting analysis, but the young generation ALL have FM radios in their cars. Furthermore, Q-102's spin count is overly excessive. No other station in Philly, or the entire world for that matter, is playing their powers this many times.

The most played songs on most of the Adult Contemporary stations in Philly, whether it's Lite AC, Urban AC, Rhythmic AC, or Adult Hits, get about 30 spins per week. The same is true for Rockers WMMR, WYSP, and WRFF. The top song on Country outlet WXTU gets a little over 40 spins.
On the Urban Contemporary front, WPHI plays its top song 90 times per week, as does Power 99.
Rhythmic CHR Wired 96.5 has its top song airing 120 times per week, which is a bit too much in my opinion as well, but still not as bad as Q-102.

My iPod repeats a lot of songs. The reason I have songs on my iPod is because I want to hear them more than once.

I have my iPod set up like a radio station. I have a three hour playlist (which I just noticed is really 3:05. Oh well). It is made up of
55 minutes of 5-star songs
65 minutes of 4-star songs
35 minutes of 3-star songs
30 minutes of songs that I have never played and not rated

Each of the first three playlists are selected by "least recently played," and then the songs are shuffled in random order. Songs automatically rotate in and out. But there is repitition. I'll hear the same song in the 5-star list every month or so. :)

Even with that, I get "iPod fatigue." I tire of hearing the songs in my library, even though they're in my library because I like them. It's why I'm considering satellite radio.

As for spins, you can't compare Q102 to WMMR. The CHR format is going to have a much tighter playlists and much higher spins on the big hits per week. It's just the nature of the format. A CHR where the most-played song of the week is only played 30 times (once every 5 hours) wouldn't be a CHR.

Look at Hot97 in NYC Is Q102 as crazy as that?

Does Wired 96.5 repeat their hit list as often? Whenever I'm in Philadelphia (I live in central Connecticut), they seem to repeat quite a bit too.

Keep in mind, Q102 speeds-up all of their music (in some cases, up to horrifically ridiculous levels).

Between the 160+ spins a week and their music sped-up around 841%, I listen to XM20 for CHR music in Philly.
