q104.3

I listen to q104 most of the time and also sample wrxp and wrat. With that said I find q104s playlist to be very stale and has become very repeditive. It seems that in the past few weeks some of the newer songs and artists have been removed from the play list. These would include the few STP, PearlJam and Greenday cuts that have been played for a few years. This seems to be confirmed by checking Yes.com. Why would Q104 make these adjustments when rating are good and they should be seeking younger listeners? At the same time CBS-FM is adding more classic rock to their playlist. I assume both stations are fighting for classic rock listeners and thats the reasons for the adjustments. One thing is certain now is the time for WRXP to steer away from classic and focus on newer rock.... Whats your take on NYC rock radio? It doesn't seem to be headed in the right direction but corp. researches know best.

I totally agree with you in that there are dangerously few artists and songs that Q104 plays that CBS currently doesn't. Then again, some (myself included) argue that '90's music is not "classic rock" yet.

The real niches for a rock station to go after in NYC are modern/alternative (with a small amount of '90s) or a hard/active rock direction (would occasionally play some '80s stuff like Metallica or a hair band track). The modern/alternative can play some of the more eccentric things but they shouldn't go too far back in their playlist as Q104 plays some borderline "early alternative" acts such as the Clash and Talking Heads. The hard/active rock station's currents would include acts such as Godsmack, Five Finger Death Punch, and Slipknot.

'RXP's mishmash of alternapop/AOR/local bands etc. is bringing them such high ratings that there's talk of FM talk returning again.

I laugh at people who suggest that RXP go in a harder direction because it sounds too much like they want it to be like K-Rock in the late 90's outside of Stern, and we know how successful that was.

In any case, it would be a sad day if RXP left the airwaves with no new rock at all on commercial New York City radio. I know they've been inching in that direction compared to where they were at the beginning of the station's existance, but I guess it's not enough.

"Great rock. Period."

:D

Well, it might not hurt 'RXP to add some harder alternative acts such as Tool, Rage Against The Machine, NIN songs other than "Closer", or a few deeper Alice In Chains songs.

There are times when you just want to kick back, crank it up, roll a fat one, and listen to_______.

a. "Layla"
b. Jim Kerr in the morning
c. Jim Kerr introing "Layla"
d. Matt Pinfield telling a full blown, lengthy "Layla" story
e. Rock radio from any other market

RXP needs to lose the Guns n Roses, Aerosmith and other lame rock and be a normal AAA. If done correctly, they can poach some listeners away from Lite and Fresh that are sick of the blandness of A/C. The people that want to hear the new Passion Pit song or some other indie band aren't the same ones that want to rock out to Welcome to the Jungle... hence the LOW TSL. Hard rock on RXP isn't going to work, it failed in NYC already... twice.

That station has a 3 way split personality, and whatever the case may be, they need to settle on one.

I was not stating that 'RXP should play more GNR, AC/DC, Aerosmith, etc. Those bands are way overplayed on Q104. I was saying that they could stand to play some harder alternative acts.

107.1 The Peak is a AAA station geared towards the suburbs (their slogan is "World Class Rock for New York's Backyard".)

To keep this thread about Q-104, I'll put my $.02 in about them. They get high numbers, but are as stale as can be. I think it's a case of "where else are they going to go?" happening.

I don't think the Tool, Rage etc. will get RXP very far. WDHA serves that niche, and the old K-Rock, which played those bands (and others like them) didn't fare too well after Howard signed off around 11. In fact, the numbers pretty much fell off a cliff. RXP should be called "New York's Rock EXPERIMENT"

They need to be a "real" AAA, with a sprinkling of classics thrown in to keep it familiar. What they're doing now is creating a low TSL by playing bad classics and new/recurrent AAA fare. Rag Doll and Bad to the Bone... really? It's like one of those pictures you got in first grade where there was an elephant in the back of a pickup truck and the instructions were to "circle what doesn't belong". Go to Mediabase and play along at home...

More New York Dolls! Iggy & The Stooges! Cherry Vanilla! yee har!!!!

More Arcade Fire! More LCD Soundsystem! (Do they even play LCD Soundsystem? :))

On the Sopranos, Tony usually had Q104.3 playing in his Escalade. Phil , being older, had doo-wop playing and so did Paulie Walnuts. They never identified any calls when the older guys were driving. I think Chris Moltisanti's music skewed even younger.

PLEASE STOP with the #*&$ing GUNS N' ROSES!!! Going from Grizzly Bear, to WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE and then to the Pumpkins to One Eskimo???????????? STOP STOP STOP!!! (the Hollies said that too) That station makes me want to punch a wall when they do that. The folks listening to the new Temper Trap DON'T want to hear Axl Rose yowl like a cat with its nuts caught in a door. I was in high school when G n R came out, and the same people that dug the Furs, REM, New Order, Cure, and later Smashing Pumpkins etc. thought that G n R were crappy then.

G n R, AC/DC, Van Halen etc. do NOT belong on a AAA. Period. AAA listeners want a refuge from the overplayed arena rock.

And to the poster above, yes, more Arcade Fire...

Don't give them any ideas... ::)

I personally think the Hollies would sound great and be a better representation of classic rock than the overplayed, overhyped G'n'R.

I'm all for more '60's music on the radio.

I did not see one NEW YORK DOLLS song on that playlist!!!!
how can you be a NEW YORK rock station with no DOLLS?!?!?

I'm shocked WRXP just played Metallica (albeit "Enter Sandman" which is a fairly well-known song). The jock followed it up with a rant about something along the lines of four-legged beasts and vampires but not emo-wimpy vampires (wtf??) and proeceeded to play an absolutely abominable cover version of the Doors' "People Are Strange" that would have Jim Morrison rolling over in his grave for sure. Another example of the trainwreck that RXP is. I'd bet they have the lowest TSL of any big-market station.
