Q106 "From the top of Mount Ascutney"

Just a thought--

I wonder how the numerous ski areas in NH and VT feel about WHDQ's new "From the top of Mount Ascutney" ID sweeper. That's pretty much hourly free advertising for Ascutney. If I were the ad buyer for Killington I'd be pretty pissed.

I love it!
I go south to go skiing every weekend from northern vt, usually at okemo.
Unfortanatly, its too bad that I have seen more and more that ski resorts have gone to satellite radio at the most chairlifts as well as ski patrol on your way up the mountain but not at all locatations

As usual, you've contributed nothing relevant to the topic at hand.

Well I don't know , they could say that it is named after the geographical mountain name if someone raised a flag on it. If WHDQ's new ID sweeper said "From atop the Mt. Ascutney Ski Area", I think more ski areas would be pissed.

And on another thought, do you think a listener is going to decide where to ski based on the sweeper of a radio station? Honestly, would you Ski at Ascutney over Killington because of WHDQ's ID? I don't think you would and I don't think others would see it that way as well.

Again thats my opinion on it.

Did anyone ever make such a comment about when WHOM used to mention that they were broadcasting from atop Mt. Washington, it was a "plug" for visiting New England's highest peak(peek)?! I think not...

Also...will "From the top of Mount Ascutney" be interpreted as a free plug in the summertime?
______________

being an avid skiier,
I have noticed I am probably the only one who listens to
fm radio while skiing. I ski every weekend and I am yet to see anyone else listening to fm radio besides a small stationary radio in a snowboard park for example listening to 99.3
my freinds listen to kiss 97 south of lyndon state college. Kiss 97 saying thier from the top of killington doesn't make is so they want to ski at killington anymore than they wanted to. the same is with lyndon state college's neighbor station wgmt magic 9.77 "from the top of burke mountain". it would be free advertising but it would not really make much of a difference for the resorts. I am not an add buyer and this is just my opinion, but then agian burke is the only ski resort nearby Magic 9.77. (cannon,Jay, and stow are too far away)
on a side note
many people who can afford to ski/snowboard use mp3 players and all other have the portable xm radio players anyways.
I am yet to see someone sirius though

I appologise if I made people mad with the plug
I figure I put it in were i stand in radio. other people besides me do it on other boards.

That's a pretty extreme way of looking at it. I honestly doubt the big players like Okemo and Killington are worried about the Q's TOH ID.

Speaking of Ascutney, I have great memories of starting my day doing ski reports, grabbing a few runs at Ascutney afterwards, and then hitting the afternoon drive mic at Q106 energized from a great ski day. Then falling flat on my face when I got home. Not many radio markets out there where you can get away with that!
______________

Down in eastern CT, classic rock WMOS plays up their studio location in Mohegan Sun casino. They even call themselves "The Wolf" for Mohegan Sun's mascot. They play down the transmitter location in Montauk, Long Island. You would think Foxwoods up the road might shy away from advertising in that environment, but they do. If they see it as a market they want to reach, or get a great combo deal with other stations in their group, they apparently haven't let this more extreme association with the competition get in the way.

I would have to think that the other ski areas could care less if WHDQ is touting their Mount Ascutney transmitter location. Even though, WZRT / WJJR / and WEBK have downplayed considerably their Killington / Pico connections over the years, even when they did shout it out, Okemo, Stratton, and Bromley still very much placed advertising on some of these stations at one time or another.

They saw the emormous potential at the time.

I'd be inclined to say that Killington wouldn't give a rat's a**, but why give away a free plug once an hour, circumstancial as it might be? Do you really think the average listener is impressed by tower location? Most Lebanon/Hanover types look down their noses at the Ascutney area anyway.
