Queen's We Will Rock You/Champions on the radio

Why is it that Radio Stations always play these two songs together?

I've never heard just one or the other played seperatley.

Yet I seem to recall from the original record (or 8 Track like I had)
they were in fact two seperate songs...

They were originally played together because of the way one flows seamlessly into the other on the original album. A lot of stations played them together and some still do.

Just the ohter week I was on my way into work, and I heard "We Are The Champions" on a college station. First time I've ever heard one without the other.
______________

Likewise:

Heartbreaker/Livin' Lovin' Maid - Led Zeppelin
Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End - The Beatles
Sgt. Pepper/Little Help From My Friends - The Beatles
Old Friends/Bookends - Simon & Garfunkel
Waitin for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago - ZZ Top
Happiest Days of Our Lives/Another Brick Pt. 2 - Pink Floyd

Lots more.

Kinda like the way the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "With a Little Help from My Friends" flow together...

None of those are played together with anywhere near the frequency that these two Queen songs are, though. The only time I can remember hearing them separately, it was the live versions that were being played.

It doesn't bother me, though. I've always thought of them as being one song, which they essentially are on the original album.

Another more modern example:

Acoustic #3/Iris - Goo Goo Dolls. They are essentially one song, and always played together at live shows, but I've never heard the acoustic portion on the radio.

The Zep one and the Floyd one are all the time.

Also you can add Pink Floyd's Brain Damage / Eclipse (the last 2 songs on DSOTM) and Empty Space / Young Lust (from The Wall Disc 1) to the list of songs played together.

Waitin for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago - ZZ Top

This is always played together.

Another example is Inxs "Need You Tonight"/"Mediate". I actually get mad when a station DOESN'T play "Mediate" after "Need You Tonight"

More frustrating is that you always hear Softcell Tainted Love/Where did our love go together on the radio but can NEVER find it on any CD's or even download services... Argh!

Same here. Very few stations do this unfortunately. Y100 in Philly used to when it was around and got me hooked on both songs.

Another one I like is Pink Floyd's Happiest Days into Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2.

It's plenty frustrating just hearing that song to begin with! ;)

That was a radio edit only. You'll have to find the original promo 45/12" to get it. Though why you'd want to is beyond me...

I worked for a classic rock station when we had a contest to listen for the 'car crash' sfx in order to win tickets to a Nascar race. Since we had reign to play it anywhere, even in the middle of a song, I played it smack in the middle of the two Queen songs. Boy, did I hear it after that! It was like I just killed the PD's kitten.

I've NEVER heard "Mediate" on the radio. I've only heard the two played together on MTV when the video was new.

While I love "The Wall" album, I much prefer when radio plays the single version of "Another Brick..." with the 10 second (or so) intro.

You're not looking hard enough, Timmy.

It's track #13 on the Rhino release "Hard Rock Cafe: New Wave", which I found ten copies of for sale on Half.com, most in the $3 to $4 range.
______________

For the PD, it was a "train wreck."

I lived in Philadelphia when the Phillies won the World Series for the first time in sixty years. WMMR and a few stations played We Are The Champions without We Will Rock You.

But that was a once in sixty year event.
