Queen's We Will Rock You/Champions on the radio

An Urban AC example...?

I don't know if many urban/urban AC stations did this, but WBHK 98.7 "Kiss FM" (Birmingham) almost always segues Luther Vandross' "If Only For One Night" into "Creepin'".

Looking the song up on Amazon...yep, both are listed as one song on his "The Best of Luther Vandross: The Best of Love" album.

Wonder if other stations played both tunes without separation?
______________

I just found IT!, but it seems they're Sold Out.

KROQ Pasadena/Los Angeles had their own 9 Minute Custom Version of the Softcell Song, and it included drops from the BATMAN TV Series, Clint Eastwood, James Bond, and Tons more. They even mixed other Songs into Tainted Love/Where did our Love Go, for example Popcorn by Hot Butter. Remember this was 24 Years ago, before Digital equipment. Well done Custom Mixes like these were Rare! And I had it on Tape at one point, along with all the other great K-ROQ Stuff. I will never forget the things KROQ did to make life in Southern California so much fun in the 80's!

Uber rare collection of DJ Only megamixes created in the mid-'80s by the DMC DJ Remix company. These mixes have never been commercially released before and include a gazillion samples from movies, TV shows, other songs, etc. The Soft Cell "Tainted Love" mix was played extensively on KROQ in the '80s (this is the version that ends with a segue into The Human League's "The Sound Of The Crowd" and includes samples from everything from Batman to the '70s electronic hit "Popcorn"). These mixes are EXTREMELY rare and next to impossible to find. We've found an extremely limited quantity, so get yours while you can, because the odds are once they're gone... they're GONE!

Here's another one: Elton John- Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding

In dozens of answers, no one answered the question, other than to say that they sound good together.

Everyone else just gave more examples.

Frustrating to read a whole thread like that.

73s from 954
______________

For starters, those two songs were originally released as a 45RPM single (wow, who remembers those?) They both appear on the Billboard charts that way.

If said stations are using TM Century GoldDiscs for source material, those two songs appear as a single track. I don’t have any of Queen’s CD’s, but it’s also possible those two songs appear as a single track as well. Assuming either case is true, it’s probably practical to rip the whole track and play it as is.

This was correctly addressed

When "News of the World" was released, there were no TM Century GoldDiscs. In fact there was no such thing as Compact Discs at all. It has been explained that these Two in One songs were released as a Radio Edit. They also were mixed together on the L.P. and then this:

**"We Will Rock You" was not released as a single in its own right, but as the B-side to "Champions". Despite this, it became one of Queen's biggest songs worldwide, and a staple of arena and stadium sports everywhere. It was a conscious decision by May to make the song so simple and anthemic ("stomp, stomp, clap, pause" in a 4/4 metre), so that the audience at their concerts could be more directly involved in the show. Queen were always looking to connect with their audiences and fans at live shows, to make their experience that much better. Elektra Records in the US recommended to the band they put We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions together as a single and the double A-side reached #4 in the US in 1978.**

And another question about it

> have any of Queen’s CD’s, but it’s also possible those two
> songs appear as a single track as well.

I believe they are separate tracks on Queen's CDs, but they are always sequenced together.

Here's another question about those two songs played on the radio. I remember when they would be played and you'd hear the full 1 or 2 seconds of silence between tracks, just like on the album. Now on most stations they are edited so Freddie can sing "I've paid my dues" before the last guitar stroke ends on "We Will Rock You" What is THAT all about? Did research say that people tune OUT if God-forbid there's a second between tracks? That's really annoying.

More than anything, this thread has made me appreciate how good classic rock is. So many of the songs and artists listed were awesome, some of the best music ever recorded. There were so many talented and creative artists out at the same time making great music. In the case of two songs blending together, often times it would give me a "goosebumps" sensation during the second between the songs.

The legend behind Queen's We Will Rock You/Champions on the radio

I believe it was the Summer of 1977 when Queen hit the charts. WLS and WCFL in Chicago were battling for the top position in the ratings. One weekend WCFL ran a "double play" weekend, where you won a bunch of records for being the correct caller when two songs by the same artist were played back to back. Grand Prize was concert tickets.
A CFL weekend night jock named James Kaye felt the contest would be too easy if you played only hits. (Today, a jock would be fired for this, instead of launching a national a/b side hit).

As many major market stations did at the the time, WLS and WCFL monitored each other nearly 24/7. When the CFL jock segued from We Will Rock You into We Are The Champions, John Gehron, the PD from WLS was listening and put a call into the studio hotline and told Tommy Edwards to do the same thing. He then the called the PD's at the ABC O&O's in New York and LA, asking about the special mix. Neither PD knew anything about it, but jumped on the chance to beat the competition to the punch. By the time the record company was called Monday to get a promotional copy, the request lines in all 3 cities were burning up for the two songs, played as one. The guy from Electra said no such version existed...until now.

Wow! What a story! Too bad there are some factual errors in my "urban legend on-demand" :) (CFL dropped Top 40 by 77, if memory serves...Edwards was PM Drive, not weekend/nights,etc)

I was hpoing somebody on here would know how this all came about. Usually it's something like the above story.

What "Special Mix"? Your Story is Flawed.

umm, It came that Way? It's called the Album Version.

Richard Blade Flashback Favorites Vol. 3 might be what you're looking for. I've had that disk at one time and it was the extended (8+min.) version, but both songs are on there and it shouldn't be too hard to edit it down if you have to.

And it's a great series to begin with if you into New Wave from the early 80's, so you can't lose.
