question re: KBSG

Any truth to speculation that KBSG will dump music entirely and become Seattle's first progressive news/talker?

Well first of all - it would be the first progressive station - there's already AM 1090.

And since Bonneville just hired the former WCBS-FM/NYC PD - I'd say a flip to progressive talk is highly unlikely.

if the guy was a major player in getting Air America off the ground, and had the smarts to grab his parachute before they crash-landed, it's not the least implausible that he'd jettison oldies for talk. Google him.

old news

If you have all the answers, how did you miss the longtime existence of 1090 as a progressive talk station?

Regardless, the overwhelming majority of his background is music radio. Of particular relevance is the CBS-FM background.

My educated guess is KBSG is still making money. So you leave it alone, with a few adjustments perhaps. I predict that KBSG will be looking closely at the "new" CBS-FM oldies that is dropping "Jack" as of tomorrow.

Yes, the new PD is not exactly a News/Talk guy.

While not "progressive", don't forget that KIRO's old FM, The Buzz 100.7 did talk for many years on the FM.

The story on Mr. Logan is that he's had a lot of great jobs and no real successes. He's more a promoter than a programmer. But, I'd bet that KBSG sticks with music. There may be some interesting talk programming coming from Bonneville, but not on KBSG.

I think he's done but they aren't ready to announce it yet.

Bit of a programming note concerning KBSG, I got an e-mail from the PD at KBSG(I had e-mailed him a few weeks ago about airing Premiere Radio Networks AT40 the 70's or 80's) and he mentioned that Premiere Radio Networks AT40 The 70's was going to start airing on KBSG August 5th.

i am doing my happy dance....i tried e-mailing them about AT40 - the 70's, but it got sent back undeliverable...but EXCELLENT news

AT-40-The 70's IS a good syndicated program. It's currently airing in my market. The fidelity and quality are excellent, and Casey is at the top of his game. The only downside is it seems to focus 1977-79, perhaps when they started vaulting the shows.

i have heard it for the last few months on the station in springfield, il. and it's all thru the 70's (minus 1979 when at40 was a 4 hour show...it went 4 hours in late '78)...last weekend was '75, the weekend before that '74

K-HITS in Portland has been airing 70s AT-40 for the last three Sundays. I've been getting up early and streaming it. They started with the very first AT-40 show in 1970. I am so happy to hear that KBSG will be airing the show as well. It will be nice to be able to listen on my radio instead of on my computer. Another step in the right direction for the new PD at KBSG. He is making some very good choices. Now, if he will only drop the 80s records I will be even happier.
Right on Mr. Logan!

agreed...i'm first of all am tired of the 80's song that are played on KBSG, not to mention that i don't want to accept the fact that they are "the new oldies" and that makes me feel old (i remember those songs when i was in high school)

I am with you dadetim. The 80s songs I hear regularly on KBSG (and would really rather not hear) are Flashdance, Eye Of The Tiger, Footloose, Don't Stop Believin. Those songs belong on a station playing 80s and 90s music. I mean, if KJR insists on making the move in that direction, then they should just go all out exclusively 80s and 90s. KBSG should just stick to 60s and 70s and continue to bring listeners fun feature programming like classic AT40. Here's another idea for Mr. Logan, bring back the Dick Bartley shows. His live Rock and Roll's Greatest Hits show on Saturday nights and the American Gold programs were very enjoyable and are sorely missed on the station.

Years, ago, around 1986, I watched Dick Bartley do his show in New York, when he was with RKO Radio.

I knew the engineer of the show and went up to see it. I thought I would be bored to tears I had been in the business so long...Dick's enthusiasm was infectious, I completely enjoyed myself!

I also understood when Dick sent me, a total stranger, down to Colony Records on broadway to pick up a song he didn't have. He had to have it for his artist spotlight, and I completley understood his attitude, and was happy to go.

I never hear anything on KBSG that is compelling, interesting, or infectious in any way. It is just another "in the box" clone POS.

I don't think anyone there has a clue how to do exciting radio, what it means to love what you're doing and get off on it, and how to execute it. It is what it is:
Dull, corporate, boring, stagnated, overly-researched, micromanaged, blah, crap.

Dick Bartley's shows are very interesting, entertaining and informative. He plays great music and has a lot of terrific guest interviews. It is also fun trying to be the right caller to win his hourly contests. He's always got some cool CD to give away. I stream his show from a station in Virginia on Saturday afternoons beginning at 4PM. He enjoys getting calls from Seattle even though the former bozo running KBSG pulled the plug on Dick's shows last year. Dick's Saturday night shows were better than that live disco thing they have on KBSG currently. I realize only two hours were actually live in Seattle, but I didn't mind. I never listen to KBSG on Saturday nights. For me it is Dick Bartley at 4PM on b97fm out of Huntington Beach, then I switch back and forth between Dick's show and Mark Lindsay's Saturday night show on K-HITS in Portland. Mark is on until 11PM. He's also got a fantastic show. This Saturday night his theme is his old show "It's Happening" from 1968/69. He is going to be playing songs from artists who guested on the show as well as featuring guest interviews from some of those acts. Mark has some great stories. Check it out if your on line Saturday night. He's on from 7-11.
