question re: KBSG

Well, it didn't last long. I've noticed an increase in 80s songs on KBSG. Too bad. I really thought this new guy was going to be good for the station but he is going to ruin it just like that last guy did. Why can't these guys get it right....EVER? People who are tuning in DO NOT want to hear Maneater by Hall and Oates or Africa by TOTO. God, I hope that K-HITS ratings are through the roof in Portland Oregond on the next report so these knuckleheads programming like stations in this country will take notice. It is so god damned frustrating as a listener. If KBSG continues to go further into the 80s, I will break down and sign up for satelite radio. I am fed up.

Agree completely. How sad is it that playing Elvis or Buddy Holly or Chuck Berry on Oldies stations is now stepping out of the formatic box. If Hall and Oates and Toto are "oldies" in 2007, get out the REO Speedwagon while you're at it and call yourselves Jack.

Yeah, and it is getting to the point where unless it is Motown, they don't play much from the sixties anymore either. I am ready to write off KBSG and campaign CBS Radio to turn Jack-FM in Seattle to a carbon copy of K-HITS in PDX. KBSG and KJR would bottom out if we had K-HITS in Seattle. Then KBSG could become KIRO FM as some have predicted and I wouldn't care less.
KBSG is also sounding a little more Classic Rock than Top 40. What's next, endless spins of Stairway To Heaven?

Except, "Stairway to Heaven" was a top40 hit in Seattle, atleast judging by the amount of airplay KJR-AM gave it!

I understand the need for "true" oldies stations, but from a business standpoint, I'm afraid they just don't pencil out in 2007. The audience that remembers the 50's, is now well over 55 years old now. Like it or not, advertisers are not willing to buy that demo. Hey, I love music from that era, and even before, and I'm not yet even 50. But, from a business standpoint, these so-called "oldies" stations are doing what is in their best interest. I'm not saying it is right, but it is reality.

I understand it's a business decision, and I have no problem with that.

However, if that's the case, don't call it Oldies - call it something else. It my mind, Oldies hasn't been Oldies since Oldies stations started playing disco tracks.

In their defense they dropped "Oldies" moniker some time ago and only refer to "Hits". KJR-FM was first to do that many years ago -- then settled into the "classic rock" lean on their "hits" while KBSG stayed more "pop mainstream". Because of reasons cited by searadiofeak, many stations consider "Oldies" moniker to be something now that creates an image they no longer want.

"Oldies" is a brand name that represents music from the sixties (with a little late 50s and a little early 70s, but basically 60s music). To call today's incarnation of 60s/70s hits "Oldies" is probably not wise- if you're wildly successful, a heritage Oldies station with a major morning show and have been using the term Oldies for 20 years or so, it's not gonna kill you. But if you're hanging on for dear life and want to make the transition away from the Ronettes into Elton and Fleetwood Mac, you're probably better off not calling yourself "Oldies", since it represents something you no longer are.

Well, whatever they want to call it...Oldies, Classic Hits etc. It isn't the friggin name of the format... it is the product. And I am not liking the product. Why can't we have a station that play 60s and 70s and a station playing 80s and 90s in this stupid town? We've got KJR and KBSG doing the exact same thing!
I guess we'll see how it plays out. If by adding 80s records to their mix makes them big ratings winners then I will be the first to admit I was wrong. But if they go in the crapper or remain stagnate then I will be the first to give them a resounding Nelson Muntz cheer of "HA-HA!"

I don't care what the format is, if your station is highly rated, like #1,2 or 3 in the market I can't imagine your gonna have a hard time selling it.

Like I said, I am just done. You can spew all the stats on testing and research you want. I think it is a very...er...uh.... fecal way to program a station.

Stairway To Heaven was not released as a single to the general public unless we're talking about the Neil Sedaka song.

Whether a song was ever released as a single has nothing to do with it's validity on KBSG or any similar station today. All listeners know is, "I like that song" or "I don't like that song"- they give no consideration to the fact it may or may not have been released as a single.

Heck yeah...if AM radio "consultants" had gotten it, we'd have a killer guitar intro, and the last line of the song. All else in the middle edited out "for length" and "potential tuneout". New total time: 2:04.

<sigh>

"consultants" had nothing to do with it.
