Question: Why are some Engineers not nice? (mod edit)

I'm not an engineer...but I do respect them...just as I respect most all of the broadcasters (on-air, sellers, office staff, whatever) I work along side. If you work in this profession - get out.

And if you want to continue to slam people who work in our business -- be a man and don't use your alias - PUNK.

Hum, Like You? I'm a young boy in the business, I'll admit it. Only been doing this a couple of years. But, I know what is good, and what SUCKS! So, don't you tell me what is professional and what is not.
 
Here is what would suck: your station goes off the air because the "engineer" put the wrong fuse in the slot. The transmitter overheats and catches fire. Whoops.

Look, I get it that your engineer isn't exactly Mr. Friendly. I have a couple co-workers who don't get along with ours. But the station ticks along so we don't need to see him. (he's a contract guy)

You just seem to be painting with a 4" brush where 1/8 of that is required.

You, dear boy, have a lot to learn about professionalism in this business. Real professionalism is being good at your job. You don't have to be a people person necessarily for that, but there are limits. If you've only been in this business a couple of years like you say, then you're still a long way from being a true professionals. You're going to get blown out of your gig one day, and where are you going to be when you need a job? There's burning bridges, and there's burning them, blowing them up, and then polluting the water beneath them. Change your attitude and you might have a future.

I'd love to introduce you to the contract engineers in the cumulus building...they may not always be the most personable but they would do anything to keep the station on the air...when you see them next time, make sure that you thank them for getting up at all hours, for little pay just to keep the stations on the air. J B, I don't know if you are going to make it this business but if you are nice to people on the way up...they we help you get where you are going...

Oops. Sounds like you got busted there, JB. How are things at ZOK? I'm surprised they even HAVE a night jock in Rockford, which is the irony of your comment about engineers needing air talent to even have a job. Do you have any idea how expendable you are?

Most engineers that I know have been doing it a very long time. Like that Continental transmitter that no doubt still sits in the ZOK transmitter room. I haven't seen it in over 20 years, but I'll bet it's still there. It's not still the main transmitter is it? And how old were you in 1986?

And that's my point. The guys you're talking about have probably been in radio longer than you've been alive. If you come off as a wiseass and tell them how to do their job, if you don't appreciate the years of wisdom and perspective they have accumulated, maybe you're just reaping where you've sown. Indeed, these guys may be jerks, but maybe you bring out the worst in people. Did you ever think of that? Do you do things that drive the engineers crazy?

Some jock back in the 70s took the window panes out of the ROK studio to clean them between records. Go in there right now and take a look at that window, and think about what kind of moron would take it upon himself to take it out on a Saturday afternoon without asking anyone. And think about how many faces have looked through that window since it was put in. There have been a lot of good ones. You're just one of them. Hopefully you'll gain a little humility so your career doesn't end before it ever really got started.

Wow, you old timers thought you figured it out. Nope, it's not JB love? or whatever his name is...sorry you are wrong. But, I'm going to agree to disagree with you on the engineering issue. I've posted, my last post on the subject...until he pisses me off again. I'm happy I was able to spark a nice discussion about radio and engineers. A parting Shot...How many engineers does it take to fix a transmitter! (punch line) One To Scratch his butt and another to call tech support. Oh, I do stand up on the side too.

Radio is a fun business, even for us youngsters...teaching you oldtimers a thing or two about how to do it right. I know that will piss someone off. LOL!

I'm sure many broadcast companies are blessed with good people, but sometimes you have a real ass that needs to be called on the carpet! And that's what I did. Sorry, to upset anyone. Sparky, I do respect you and your little broadcast company. You might want to check your engineering department next chance to see how your people treat the rest of your operation. You may be suprised. It's a new world. Respect goes a long way...take it from me I know! I really do respect my elders, okay, sometimes. When your young you think you can fix the world. At least, I'm trying.

You may be trying, kid, but you sure aren't succeeding, that's for sure. The only thing you've "taught" us "old-timers" is that some things never change. Despite all the changes our industry has been through, there's always going to be some smart-aleck who thinks he hung the moon and that the industry revolves around him and others who think like him. You can turn a deaf ear to this, but maybe you can understand it...you'll survive in this business a lot longer if you make more friends than you do enemies. So I say again...check the attitude.

This is an issue that will continue to be debated for years to come....engineering vs programming.
 
You know it comes down to working as a team. From sales to programming to office support to promotions down to the engineer we're all in this game together. And the engineer is the one that gets all the pesky calls uh my computer doesn't work at 2am. How much sleep do they actually get?

I'm afraid this is a problem that will be debated for years to come, us versus them. I thought that maybe we'd eventually get past this and learn to live in harmony, but I guess not.

This is JB Love. I'm not the guy with the 2009 thing in his name. I would never badmouth people I work with, especially engineers, considering I assisted one for my first few years in radio.
 
To the poster of "without us jocks, there'd be nothing to engineer"...I've got three words for you:

Bless you, JB. You're one of the few. I could sit at the feet at one of these old-timers and hear them go on for hours.
 
Even the ones leaning to the superior mind and shorter fuse, were GREAT to learn from...They had to put up with my 16 and 17 year old ego, as a 'youngster'...BUT, as I got older and put myself into their shoes, they are the greatest bunch of 'solo saviors of the airwaves'.... As I learned, next thing I found out was that I had become ENG phase I and II (of about five levels)....As now, I am an SBE member, I find them as a fabulous part of the biz..... ;D

Hey Skip! You ever work with John Q Shepler in Rockford? THAT was/is an engineer who knew his stuff.....
 
No, but heard alot about him through the sister station set up with Nolte's WROK, WBNQ and WGBF... 8)
