Quick & Joe

Just two years ago State College had 3 current-based rock FM stations. Now there's one: WQWK. They should be partying hardy--if there's anyone there left to party. As the only rocker left in a major college town (no disrespect to The Bus, but their target is old guys) Quick/Forever has opportunity staring 'em in the face: a wide-open field. No competition. What do you think they'll do with the opportunity? Joe 105.9? Rimshot signals need to be unique to attract listeners. Playing the same tunes Froggy is playing ain't unique. Weirdest thing was bailing 10 weeks into the Spring book--the one that will probably show Buzz with great numbers in the rock demo. Would have given them a real story on the street. What's the story now? "Cheaper than Froggy"? One thing is for sure. They'll do better in Philipsburg.

They're out of the picture on this one. But I do see 3 or 4 rock shares up for grabs that used to go to Revolution & Buzz and those should go to Quick by default. Along with what they've already got, they've got a great chance to rise to the top.

I hear a new rock station called 1069 the surge...i think its out of Lock haven that comes in pretty clear here in state college? they play a good mix of modern rock and classic rock.

I believe it's also owned by Magnum. It was almost a "sister station" of The Buzz. Now it's more of a hybrid of classic & new rock. It's licensed to Renovo, I believe...

"QWK should be really happy to pick up that .7 that was earmarked for the Buzz."Go back to the last time Revolution & Buzz were both playing alt rock (Fall 03) and do a 4 book average: they combine for a 4.8 (12+) share--3.4 for GMR and 1.4 for UBZ. With their current 4.5 share, WQWK would be looking up at them now.

That was three years ago. Revolution has been doing CHR for almost two years, so the audience from the Modern Rock days is long gone. Ratings for the Buzz had fallen to below a 1.0 share in the last book. I don't think you can take ratings from three years ago, with totally different market conditions, and apply them to Spring 2006.

For the most part, Modern Rock as a format has been D.O.A. for a number of years. The format simply ran its course. There is a reason WGMR walked away from the format even though they had great success with it over the years. Once they dropped it and the market was left with one Modern Rock outlet and BUZZ still could not make it fly...that should tell you something. The Modern Rock Audience is virtually non-existant these days. The music is too much in the "mainstream". Even 3-WZ tosses in today's "Alternative type" bands...although not the heavy stuff and Qwk covers the rest. I'd venture to guess that QWK already had whatever "Modern Rock" fans happen to live in Happy Valley. Can't earn gains with listeners you already have. The format flop from BUZZ to JOE will mean nothing to anyone the way I see it.I'm more curious to know how JOE thinks they will make an impact taking on the Frog which has a superior signal, great sound, is well programmed and has many many years ahead of them in building up listener loyalty. Almost seems as good an idea as opening up a Mom and Pop shop right next door to Wal-Mart and expecting people to shop in your store even though you don't have the selection and your prices are higher? Much as I HATE Jack....would have thought that would have been the most logical move for any station making a format switch in this market right now.

I was hoping for WOOO - all O-Town, all the time

Because we can hear them (faintly) on our car radios, we make the mistake of thinking 105.9 is a player. The signal just isn't competitive, no matter what format they slap on it. "Joe" will debut in the Fall 06 book with a 2 share and then settle in at the 3 or 4 range. It'll all come out of Frog's hide, but won't hurt them a bit. When you're racking up 20 shares in Altoona, who needs State College?

Wow, will you pick my lottery numbers for me?

Here is one question I do have...is JOE a satellite delivered pre-packaged format? I can tell for sure the Bubba whatever it is morning show is...but any other local talent at all, or is it all "off the bird"? Also...have to say, I have been greatly enjoying the clients of the former Buzz having their spots air on Joe. I am sure that the End Zone is pleased to have their message hitting the world on Joe-FM...and I found it really funny to hear a "Hey this is Chris and Jim from Chris and Jim in the Morning for Adelphia Cable" on Joe smack dab after the Bubba Show signed off the other morning. Can't tell the format flip was done in a rush huh? Have to wonder how many of these paying clients are gonna get mad as heck when they realize they signed up for an Alternative outlet and they are being broadcast loud and proud on a Country Station that no one seems to know even exists yet.

they should have hired you...a track record 2nd to none in the market and you always have all the answers. These owners in this market must all be stupid - or they just can't afford you.

Let's not start on track records. No need to get insulting to anyone in particular. Even in my most negatively slanted posts, I don't take aim at People....Companies perhaps...but not people. Thats just uncalled for...Besides...do your homework. I have a track record that can speak for itself anyway if you look deep enough. I had my day way back when at a time this was my life and not my fun.Just making an outsider's observation. Doesn't sound so great to announce this brand spanking new radio station and the next thing you know you hear the former morning team doing a spot for the station announcing themselves as the morning hosts. Just would have thought ads like those would have been pulled is all.And yeah..its was a legitimate question...IS IT a satellite delivered format? Nothing wrong with satellite programming. We use some at 101 too, but I was curious if its all satellite, or partially programmed locally too.

You insulted the work of a lot of people...hard work...when you insult things that are done on certain stations...so you, yes you Hitman, have insulted people...so two ways about it.

Kinda like when the Rev went to G-Spot-101 and there were still promos for the Rev running for a few days!?!

Kettle...black...never mind.

The morning show is from the bird and the rest of the day has local jocks (v/ted) and the music is done locally also. WOW, if they have a pro like you not sure - just imagine how the dairy farmer in Hicksville will perceive it.

Ha Ha.....Did country ONCE in my life on a fill-in basis for a sick DJ....hope to never suffer though it again. Don't get me wrong....I think the programming and promotions on Froggy for example are pure genuis (even though I personally don' t care for all the Frog this and Frog that)...but if I had to listen to that stuff all day, I think I'd go hop in a lake and hope to drown ;

And as for Hicksville....if its not on my GPS unit...don't even care where it is....I'll stick to the Townies please
