R.I.P. John Cigna

Rest in peace Cigna.

On another note, this goes to show you how far the bar was lowered and there's no quality control, nice to see Uncle Cracker posting his condolences on the CBS webpage. C'mon CBS! Wake up and monitor your darn site.

R.I.P. John. When I moved to Pittsburgh in 1999, I wanted to listen to KDKA-AM because of it's rich history, and I listened to John Cigna all the time until his retirement.

One of the first shows I called, after Party Line and Jazzbeaux was Cigna back in 1972 or 3. Sad to see these old voices going.

Once upon a time, a long time ago, I listed to John Cigna on WOWO out of Ft. Wayne Indiana. He was playing Top 40 records back then, would have been the mid to late 60s.

Listened to him as a kid on the radio. Was an intern at KD in the 1980's and was very gracious. Love the K-Team, Children's Hospital Christmas broadcasts and the Spaghetti breakfasts!

A Pittsburgh institution.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

May his soul rest in peace. I never met him, but I got the impression that he was the same off the air as he was on the air.

My dial was glued to that KDKA evening lineup... John from 9-midnight, Roy Fox from whenever-the-skywave-kicked until 9, and Perry Marshall at midnight.

John was a giant in Pittsburgh radio, and in Pittsburgh in general. I never really got a chance to hear him in AM drive, but I was visiting Pittsburgh one day when the entire station was devoted to that year's spaghetti breakfast.

And if my schedule would have allowed, I'd have stopped in...

Someone on the other thread here was talking about how KDKA needed to be "more Pittsburgh".
John Cigna was a perfect example of what that means. R.I.P.

"More Pittsburgh" seems like a snappy thing to say, but KDKA has been blown out by a talk competitor that has no local programming.

I remember listening to him doing school closings. I never met him, but he always seemed like a warm person and very friendly. Radio personalities aren't like that anymore.

Anyways, maybe someone can help me out. Did KDKA let Bogut so they could replace him with Cigna or did Bogut leave for WTAE and they put Cigna in the mornings because there was an opening?

Honsberger,Hoerth,Cigna. We are loosing a lot of Pittsburgh radio giants!

Bogut went to WTAE because he wanted to do radio and TV, and KDKA didn't have any significant TV work for him.

And as I recall, the move was made possible because O'Brien and Garry agreed to take their morning show over to FM (96.1). Not sure if it was WHTX then or something else.

No.....O'Brien and Garry were moved to FM over their objections. They considered being bumped off AM for Bogut a demotion. They signed with B94 and sued to get out of their contract with Hearst but lost in court and reluctantly made the move to 96.1

and if you had seen the TV show they produced for Bogut, you'd agree that wasn't a good deal for anyone!

Wasn't it 96KX then? And speaking of bad TV shows, remember O'Brien & Garry's video show? They sometimes played really good videos, but the patter in between....yoicks.
