R.I.P. Skip Caray

I received the news about Skip via these boards. Yes, and it's a very sad day indeed for everyone who is a Braves fan like me. I enjoyed Skip ever since I watched the Braves starting in 1991 when they started winning games like crazy.

Some favorite Skip moments:

Game 7 of NL Finals in 1992: Sid Bream sliding into home base: Skip saying "SAFE!!! Braves win! Braves Win! Braves Win! Braves Win! Listen to this crowd!

Otis Nixon catching the ball as it was about to become a home run in 1994: "He caught the ball, he caught the ball, WOW!!! Amazing!!!"

The Atlanta Braves winning the World Series in 1995: " And the Atlanta Braves have given you a World Series."

Among many other favorite moments...

I'm glad that Chip got to broadcast with his dad for the last years of Skip's life. But I wouldn't have guessed that he would leave us THIS soon. I imagine he is up there in heaven right now with his dad broadcasting a baseball game with Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Roberto Clemente, among many others who left us too soon.

God Bless You, Skip and the entire Caray family at this time. Your voice will be missed. :'( :'(

I feel certain that there will be a televised tribute to Skip, I know there should be one, with highlights of his broadcasting career and out takes and memories etc.

The question is where will it be, Sports South, WTBS National, Peachtree TV(I hope not because many of us won't get to see it) Turner South, or where, and when.

If anyone finds out or hears details please post here.

I heard a good Skip Caray story on Mayhem this morning courtesy of Chris Domino:

A few years ago Skip was hanging around the hotel bar and this beautiful blond walks up to him. She leans in close to him and says, "I'll do anything you want for $500."

Skip looks up and replies: "Fine, the pre-game show is yours tomorrow."

Just found out the news myself, so I was curious and wanted to check out the AM radio coverage. Right now, WSB 750 is going wall-to-wall coverage with Mark Arum taking live phone calls for at least the next few hours and even going commercial-free between 10PM-11PM.

Ironicially, the Braves Flagship station, WGST 640, is airing a syndicated political national show, so you be the judge on that one.

... and Monday night airs a Skip Caray Tribute Show tonight at 7 .... on News Talk 750 WSB. (also hosted by Mark Arum). I just heard Clark Howard announce it and it's also mentioned on WSB radio's homepage.

As a Mets' fan, I got irate when Caray would bash Shea Stadium (Even though it is no where near the quality of Turner, it still was home), NYC, and Mets' fans. That fact was that he was a very entertaining broadcaster, and called a great game. I truly appreciated that. I am saddened by the passing of a legendary broadcaster. May he and his father (who was one of my broadcasting idols) be calling games of those past greats now in heaven. Thanks for the memories, Skip!

I spent a few of my early years in the business as a board op for a Braves affiliate. This was back in the mid 80s when the team stunk up the joint. I always enjoyed how Skip didn't take things too seriously. My most vivid memory was when we he would do the Goody's homerun jackpot inning.. If someone did not put down a street address, but a P.O., he was say something like.. "our next contestant is joe so-and-so who lives in a post office box in Smryna" A distinguished voice of sports which will be sadly missed.

I always liked it when someone would catch a ball in the stands and Skip would say something like, "...and a fan from Roswell's taking home a souvenir tonight."

Rest in peace, Skip. We'll miss ya. :(

Tonight Braves have a tribute too carried on the pre-game on WGST/94.9 The Bull starting at 9:05 pm.

The ga radio hall of fame announced that it's members had already voted to induct caray, johnson, and van wieren this year and since he passed they decided to go ahead an announce it. There's a great clip of skip back in 1976 when he was on ring radio on their web site.

A great Skip moment: The Braves were playing the Giants in San Fran and the game was about to start. I'm listening to the game on WSB, and as they come out of commercial break, the national anthem is still being sung. Well, this singer was not very good...at all. Apparently, the producer left Skip's headset mic on and you heard Skip from the back of the room say "boy, she is TERRIBLE." The anthem ends, and Skip comes back on the air and continues with "well, that was such and such performing our national anthem, and not a very good job of it."

It was classic Skip. That, and one night, Don Sutton was talking, and as he paused, Skip said "hey look, I just spilled my tea all over my scorebook and I didn't even cuss."

We'll miss you Skip!

Skip's Death For The Birds

Update: Today, Skip's widow tells the AJC that he died, not in his sleep as widely reported, but while he was feeding birds.

"... I saw the bird feeder laying on the ground," Paula Caray said in an interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "At first, I thought, 'Gee, I guess that storm we had last night blew it down.'

"As I stood up, I could look out there and see him laying out there. So I called 911 and of course they came and it was too late..."

That's an oldie, but goodie. I heard Grizzard tell that one once, too.

While I'm not a Braves fan, I was a fan of Skip Caray. I really hated to hear the news about him, but I know he's watching a lot of baseball games up there.
